I live in Canada, ON and each year in high school we have to do a unit on
Shakespere in English class. That usually involves reading one play and doing
work on it.
I think his plays are too old for us. Why are we studying his plays? It doesn't
really help with modern English. His plays aren't particularly powerful or
funny or even superbly dramatic.
I've heard great things but so far the only shakespere I've read are the
snippets from Sandman and other random quotes. Still seems to be pretty good to
me...
If I where you I'd do some focus on Robert Anton Wilson or William Gibson or
perhaps Thoreau or Emerson if you can.
C S Lewis and Sameul Colleridge are also very good stuff.
I suppose it all depends onw what you want to do with it. Yes, I think its silly
that people in school usually have to study a Shakespeare play, since the
majority probably won't care and will never use that knowledge again.
But in saying that, I can also see how it would be useful studying Shakespeare
to, say. an English student, an author, a teacher, etc. These people need to
have at least looked at Shakespeare to see what he was like and view his writing
style. Them at least they can say they know him/his work - whether or not they
like it is irrelevant.
Hmm~ right now in my english class, we are doing Romeo and Juliet.. it's really
quite a snore! = =zzzZ While we are reading it we are also watching 2 versions
of the movie. 1 is semi-old, but still in colour (it's better than #2). 2nd one
is really silly. It's the one with Leonardo Decaprio.. xD~~
Personally I don't like Shakespere... but I guess if we need it to pass ^0^
