Problem solved, don't spam here!

---

I wanted to know how I would get the Knoppix to run on a Windows X P Home Edition. I've only found directories of files and I have no idea which ones to download or how I would run Knoppix. (example: ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/ ) Any help is appreciated ^^

I'm pretty sure u'll find what u need on this site :D
http://www.knoppix.org/
last version 4.0 and me thinks Knoppix is a bootable CD that install nothing ;) some kind of "I want to try Linux out but don't have spare HDD xD"

is this the install version of knoppix or the live version of knoppix

Did you boot the Knoppix-CD/DVD or did you just open it when using Windows?
You have to boot the Knoppix disc in the same way you would boot Windows's Installation disc. Don't worry, it won't touch your Windows installation unless you tell it to do so. Knoppix will use your computer's RAM as a hard disk replacement.

I'm talking about the Live-CD/DVD, I'm not 100% sure if there is disc that installs it the traditional way. It's been a while since I've used Knoppix.

I'm pretty sure you can choose to install knoppix onto the harddisk with the live-CD, I haven't run the most recent version, but I can sort of recall that past versions did ask you whether you wanted to use the LiveCD function or install to harddisk when you first booted up Knoppix.

Anyways, with the LiveCD, make sure you configure your boot-order to read the CD before harddisk. Or if you're lazy and you have a pretty new laptop (or laptop with a relatively new bios) just hold down "c" when the computer boots up and it should tell BIOS to read from CD. "f" for floppy, if you were wondering as well.

Lastly, I believe knoppix does use some harddrive space to save your system configurations and files. But hey, I could be wrong.

Hope this helps.

Actualy you can run linux inside windows.
Just get the trial edition of ms virtual pc or vmware workstation.

i did this on my old celeron 1.1ghz with about 380mb ram so it kind a lagged seriously and the screenshot is messed up. And my desktop was kind a cluttered then :P

Can you run the "LiveCD" with a download instead of buying a CD? I thought Knoppix was meant to be free.

You just have to boot the CD instead of booting from hard disk. Emulators like vmware or virtual pc are only needed if you want to run it inside of windows. There's a free open source emulator called qemu too but from what I've heard so far it's far slower than vmware. I never used it through. Well, emulations will always be slower than the 'real thing'.

When starting a computer there's usually a key you have to press in order to tell your BIOS that you want to manually choose your boot media. I need to press the 'del' key if I want launch the boot menu but the key you need to press may vary if you are using different BIOS-software.

You can download the Knoppix-ISO itself here.

Knoppix is free.

To use it, u have to download the knoppix iso and burn it to a cd. Do not, i repeat do not unzip the iso before burning it. Using Nero, cancel everything then go to recorder -> burn image -> select the downloaded iso and burn it. Then make sure your computer is made to boot from cd, leave the cd in your drive and restart.

Thanks for the information ^^ Just one thing, I don't know how I would download the ISO because it shows me a directory of the files, but I don't know which to download...

It should look something like this in the first directory, or a directory labeled ISO:

KNOPPIX_Vx.x.x-xxxx-xx-xx-EN.iso

I think it's something like v3.8.2 (version number) for the first 3 X'es. The other X'es are the build-date (I think). The numbers may be different, it doesn't matter. Just make sure it's only the .iso file and it has EN in it, unless you happen to want the German version (DE)

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much, so now all I do is download that one file (not the other files like files:

Quote: KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso
KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso.md5
(...)
KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso.sha1
KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso.sha1.(...)

?)

Then I burn KNOPPIX_V3.9-2005-05-27-EN.iso to a CD w/ Nero when it is done downloading. Then what? How do I use Knoppix?

*.md5-files are quite useful to check if the the checksum is correct. You don't need it to use Knoppix.

Don't forget to tell Nero to create a bootable CD, this is necessary to boot from it. After Nero finished you need to restart your computer. When your computer starts again you have to tell your BIOS to boot from CD. There must be a special key to enter the boot-menu, at my BIOS it's the "del"-key but it may be a different key at your BIOS.

Or you can just hold the "c" key down, if your computer runs a processor past a Pentium II then holding down the "c" should tell BIOS to force-read the CD. Editing the boot order in BIOS works too.

From then on the instructions should be given by knoppix. If you're ever doubtful about a selection just use the one given by default.

Wow, I think Firefox has decided to hate me... The download completely froze at 15%... is the download too large for Firefox to handle?

nope, I've downloaded DVD iso files using firefox. It could be that the server you're downloading from is horribly lagging from too many downloads.

Okay the download is complete after one misdownload and one download that was only 50 so megabytes large. >_<

Now I've got Nero up, selected "Make Bootable CD" under "Data", etc. I selected "Burn Image" then selected the image file. Next it brought me the "Burn Compliation" then I clicked burn. After that it asked me to save a file called Image.nrg. And I did. Then I checked the CD only to find that there was no data on it...

Edit: It seems to be working this time, not sure yet.

Edit2: Yay! It worked! I do need some help, still. I don't know how to connect to the internet or access my files from Knoppix, can I even do that? I read their FAQ and it didn't mention that...

@Accessing your harddisc: Your harddisc-partitions are usually represented as icons on your desktop. By default you can read them but you can't write on them. There's a good reason for this. Linux is using a different filesystem for it's partitions than Windows. If something goes wrong when writing files into your Windows-partition then this can lead to data loss or sometimes even screw up Windows's whole filesystem. You can enable write-access but it's safer to not change the default settings, especially if your Windows is using the NTFS-filesystem (WindowsNT,XP,2000).

@internet: What kind of internet connection do you have? DSL? isdn? Do you use a router to connect with the net?

I'm not an expert on this topic, I know how to set up my own DSL-connection and DHCP but that's about it.

If you can't find (official site, google) any useful Knoppix-how-tos/wikis for setting up your internet connection then you should expand your search. How-Tos/Wikis for Debian (Knoppix is based on Debian) or Ubuntu should be useful too.

If all else fails maybe this page will help. Searching their forums or posting a thread there (after searching their forums) may also be helpful.

(If there is no Firefox on your Knoppix-disc than you can use Konqueror as a web browser.)

If you're using a broadband connection then knoppix should configure it for you during bootup, just have the computer connected. As for your harddrive partitions, like what Fabian said, they should be on your desktop. Otherwise google up: "mounting harddrive partitions." It's a straight forward process and you only need to use the terminal.

If mozilla, firefox, and konqueror fail, you can try using lynx =D. It's a text based browser built into terminal -- not as great as a normal GUI one but hey, its an internet browser.

In the directory you provided, I spotted the file File: KNOPPIX_V3.8.2-2005-05-05-EN.iso

i think you need to burn this CD image to CD then boot off of said CD.

...But I've never used knoppix. ...It looks like this directory has both German and English version... (EN, DE)

Thanks Archer79, but I've gotten that far already ^^

i have Comcast with a wireless router. I'll look at that, thanks for the info, now I'm going to let this thread die away. Thanks everyone for the help = D

Edit: *Is letting thread die* To Archer49, it went well. Thanks for asking ^^

Well lemme know how it goes! ...You might post at the Linux group if you need anything else.

Do not forget that Knoppix is now on different support : CD and DVD (still free).

You can boot on both of them since your BIOS has been configured to check out for any cd/dvd before IDE (which is your hard drive connection on the motherboard).

The difference between the CD version and the DVD one is that you have more stuff for developers, designers and etc. on the DVD because of the volume we can put on a DVD.

Last thing: You can configure your Knoppix since it has started to recognize the Windows partition on the hard drive. This way, you could save every work you've made under the Knoppix. This will also helpfull if Windows doesn't want to start anymore because of a crash and you want to make some backups before clean the hard drive.

Do you also know what is Floppix ? If not, check it out : it's some kind of Knoppix on USB key ;)

Even though this thread is dead (haha, that rhymes), that is very useful. Thanks Willem!
