I thought scans could be used to cut the charakter out and use it for your
walli. But now i have read a thread that it isnt allowed. So for what are they
good?
scans are used to make walls ^^ Most of the walls we see have scans with just
the char and a white bg ^^ So that's not really cutting it out. The just make
the white part..umm..not show..And the scans that have a bg, people just make
the other parts of the wall to match the scans bg.. I hope that answers your question =]

To answer nitram's question, cropping a scan is pretty much taking a large
chunk, e.g using the rectangular crop tool to cut out a box section, and then
pasting that chunk straight onto a background and then calling it a
wall.
The proper, allowed use of scans is to "extract" an image from a scan,
e.g using the polygonal lasso at at least 500% zoom to take out just the part
you need. Then you take what you have extracted and then integrate it into the wall you are making, e.g
doing more than just pasting it straight on.
Also dont for get to give credit to the person you got the scan from and used in
your wallpaper. it may not be thier work but they have been kind enough to scan
it in and share it with all of us. As long as you do this and not just change
the size of the scan into a wallpaper size then you will be fine. as
eternalparadox stated you only use the charcter to help with making your wall.
Also say if you used the whole thing but added multiple filters, effeects layers
over the top and only leave a slight percentage of the original image
visiable, this also is normally acceptable as you have edited the image enough
with your own style to make it you own work, but like i say always give credit
to the scan owner when possible.

well, we all here need scans for walls! I also do my own dvd covers for some
fansub animes, cause of the size (6000x4000 or sooo ~.) I need high sized scans!
And MT is one big source ^.^" (it sounds that Im really only raising up my
level for scans ... O_o" nonono that's not it! ;_;)

They may also be used for other types of artwork as I see it, such as skins for programs.
