my grapgic card is kind of really old ( five years ago) couldn't even run War Craft very well.

now i see there's Half Life 2, what graphic card and CPU do i need?

and what's the one that you guys using?

if your comp is 5 years old it looks like your lookin for some major upgrades huh.

well todays graphic cards will play through them easy, just a matter of your budget ...

its a nice article that might help you on the graphic card, im running a radeon 9600, hope this helps :)

I use a Geforce FX 5600 which runs Warcraft 3 on highest settings, but I doubt it will run HL 2 or Doom3 well at all... Still it cost me around 110$ about 9 months ago which isn't bad really. I can play all games I own pretty well. I'd try to get a Geforce 5900 Ultra or whatever but thats me, and I don't trust ATI at all. Nvidia all the way!

This very much depends on your money situation... CPUs are expensive, and as graphics cards are shifting, they may even be more, depending on your choice. My suggestion is to get around a Pentium 4 HT 2.6 or above, and a Radeon 9600 or above. The processor might set you back a good 150-200$, and the card will very greatly, depending on your selection and dealer. Also, you'll need a new motherboard with a new processor, and that'll cost you a bit too... Check out the Asus brand motherboards for cheap, reliable ones.

As for me, I'm running a 2.8 HT Pentium 4, Radeon 9600 (soon to upgrade to 9800 Pro), with an Asus p4s800 motherboard. Basically, it's a mid-range system that cost me just a little over "beans". The entire system, minus the monitor, plus a WinXP Home, was around 800ish dollars. If you need anything else, feel free to email me with questions. Vincint at Hnevin dot com.

oh well i've upgraded my pc last year =/ to a p4 2.4 ghz with a nvidia geforce FX 5200 and it works fine =). Anyway i'm sure it will run doom 3 or halflife 2 good at 800x600 16 bit or 32 bit o_O. but it depends on how easely your satisfied lol.

Drunkenmunkee that website is horribly outdated. Its talking about new updates with drivers that are at least a year or two old....

have a look around there, read some articles, you can go on some shopping sites and read some opinions

Get a radeon 9800 PRO which is around $200 now, and an amd barton 2500+ which is about $80 and you're all set. Also, the amd overclocks to ao 3200+ very easily.

3200+ very easily.

Don't forget to mention that for overclocking you need proper cooling and a system (mem/mobo) which can handle a high front side bus. My 8rda+ screws me with bsods over 184mhz fsb.. 3200+ speeds aren't so easily achieved. :) (I could only raise the multi of course, but that's just gay)

depends on luck of the draw. just don't keep hopes high on able to overclock to the max.

2500+ barton with a gig of ram and 9800pro should see you for quite sometime to come ( maybe not turn on all the effects in super high res, but at least you should be able to play with ok settings in medium res at playable framerates)

the nVidia GeForce 6800's are all the rage.
