Is it just me or do hard drives seem to hate me? This is my second post about a
problem I've had, the last one got answered and fixed. Anyway moving
on.
I recently installed Mandriva 10.2 Linux the other day on an old computer. The
next day I free up a much larger hard drive that I decide I would rather use in
this computer. I try to install the new hard drive, but when the BIOS is loading
and checking for a Primary Master IDE HDD, it seems to freeze. Even when I do a
scan in the CMOS it freezes when it scans for the primary hard drive. I would
like to know if there is something I'm doing wrong or if there is anything I may
have forgotten to do. Read further for part specs and what I have tried so far.
Check back for new information if you think you may be able to help
please.
CPU: Dual Pentium 2 (@300mhz) Klamath(?) (I know mandriva is for pentium 3 and
up but perhaps the extra CPU makes up for that...?)
Motherboard: AWARD P2L97-05 Rev 1.03
1st hard drive: Western Digital Caviar 38400 (8455.2MB) (old)
New hard drive: Western Digital Caviar 450AA (45.0GB) (Newer)
RAM:256MB DIMM
The individual hardware works:
I know that the new hard drive works in another computer I have because I've
tried it and mapped it, then deleted all partitions.
I know that the IDE cable and power cord I'm using work because that is where
the old hard drive was plugged in.
I know that the new hard drive used to work in the old computer because (long
story) I installed linux (an older version of RedHat) on it before, then decided
it would go to better use in a newer computer. Then when I got a better hard
drive, I took it back to the old computer that I just installed Mandriva on.
I have tried everything I can think of to get this to work for me. Please if
there are any questions for me that would help get this solved, ask. I really
want the extra space. With the linux partitions (I'm a linux beginner. Please
don't tell me to make a custom linux partition) I get only about 800MB I can use
of the origonal 8GB. I hope I haven't been too confusing...
**edit**
I've tried installing it with the jumper in all positions even though I know it
should work in Master mode. I also have made sure that the cables are all the
way in. I've tried reinserting with diffrent settings (even reset my BIOS) on my
motherboard and on the hard drive.
Make sure the jumper settings are correct. Set the one with the OS to master and
the other one to slave/cable select (CS).
See if your motherboard has a BIOS reflash, that will more than likely solve the
problems with partition sizes and such. p2 motherboard's max isn't 20 gigs, I'm
running a 40 gig harddrive on a P2 233mhz computer and it has 0 problems.
For a second I thought you had two harddrives. Still, make sure the jumper is
correctly set, and that all the cables are plugged into the correct orienation,
the correct port, and are seated all the way in. My server had the same problem,
but it turned out that the IDE cable for the harddrive wasn't completely pushed
in all the way.
theres always the slight possibillity of what happened to me when i was moveing
my parents hd to a newer pc from the old one i let it sit maby for 1 min when i
was putting the newer on on the desk i tryed the old drive in it and it wouldnt
read so i tryed putting it back in the old one wouldnt read i was like oh crap
lol i think its just it was old and like old ppl that are retaired they die
within a few years after retiring well sorta like that i think poor thing just
gave up on me =/ (i was properlly grounded)

It all depends on the bios. I've seen a P2 mobo that even supports up to
100gb!
Try changing the cable. If you don't have it set it according to the proper head
connection.
e.g. If you plug it to the first head. set it to Master, 2nd head, set it to
Slave.
Some bios are so dumb, you have to do this type of setting.

Your BIOS probably does not support the newer hd.
p2 mobo's max is probably a 20gb.
Make sure the jumper settings are correct. Set the one with the OS to master and the other one to slave/cable select (CS).

But I've ran this hard drive in this computer before

I've had freezing with bad ram or poor ram sl0t seats. However, usually on older boards the ram sl0ts are to blame, check there.
Deduction is your friend.
hmm try the jumpers and check if that motherboard even works with that hard dive
