I'm currently doing my very first own creation. I created a character, scenery and added lots of effects but I don't really know what is the best format to chose so that I don't lose any quality.

I'm used to making quite a bunch of work in Photoshop whether it's signatures, wallpapers, logos...etc which I, most of the time, save in jpeg but for the work I'm currently doing jpeg isn't the ideal format. I tried it and it gives me not so good results. Tried some other format and while some of them are better than jpeg the quality still takes a big hit.

So if anyone could give me some advices it would be greatly appreciated. This is a very important work for me and I intend to post it here once I'm done with it but I won't share it if it isn't at it's best.

Thanks a lot in advance.
(sry if I posted this in the wrong board)

If you really want the best quality for your work in a semi-mainstream file format, go with .png (PNG)

It's better than JPEGs in that it preserves more of the line structure, thus a better quality image

I use .PNG, but to save more space, I use .JPG.

I usually save in .jpg.

Sounds like png seems to be a good choice, so I'm gonna try it once I'm done with my work(which should be soon, finally! -.-)

I have a blue gradient as my background and It came out ugly when I tried to save it in jpeg a while ago. Gonna try it again just in case I messed up when I saved the last time aswell as trying all the other available formats and see which one gives me the best result.

Anyway thanks for the advices everyone, really appreciate it. I'll post again if I still have trouble with it, hopefully that won't be the case.

optimized png-24 is a good quality. perhaps better than jpg, though both save with the same potential number of colors, 16.000.000. png-8, on the other hand, is similar to gifs. it only saves in 256 colors. it is generally a better option than gif, though... unless you're doing an animation.

well I finally tried it and it seems jpeg works just fine :o

Like I said I remember saving my work in jpeg a while ago when it was still in it's early stage and it gave me bad results.

I must've done something wrong back then. Oh well.
The important thing is that I won't lose any quality and I'll be able to post it here now since the file won't be too big as opposed to png.

I also plan to print it on a color laser printer. Might use png instead of jpeg this time since file size won't matter as much.

Again thanks everyone for the help. I will post my work here soon. I hope you all check it out and add your comments about it once I do. Would be greatly appreciated! :)

Go with PNG, but you can't upload those here in the Indyart category.

I've never tried .png, but I would expect it to give good results. I usually save my work with .jpg. The biggest thing with it is to make sure it has the maximum quality set, (12 for PS7 I think) Haven't encountered too many problems.

Looking forward to your work.

Well, I finally submited my artwork in the indyart section so you're all welcome to go check it out. :)

I just wish I could've uploaded it in full resolution so you could see the little details better but the size is still pretty big so it's no big deal.

When you're doing your work, save the image in the native format of your software. This preserves all layers.

For final release art, go with .png. It's usually a better format for color and line definition. It's a bigger file format, but not as lossy. It can also support alpha channels for making parts transparent.

PNG PNG PNG! :D PNG!
Would you like me to continue?

Ya, I always save in psd when doing my work. I used jpeg of course to post it here on minitokyo but like I said previously I'm gonna use png for sure when I go print it on a color laser printer.

Format for my Art? Well on a wooden frame of course... :D

i prefer to save at png.... dont loose quyality , and is a free file format ^^

The original work file I'm using when making something is always saved as XCF (native GIMP file format, like PSD for that program). If I need to save a flat image for use later without degrading quality I tend to save as TIFF. For uploading here, you have to use JPG.

which version of photoshop r u usin?
if u have imageready as well, i suggest takin it to that for doin all ur exportin into different file formats, as it has more control...
theres a button on the photoshop toolbard to directly send it to imageready...
otherwise jus launch imageready and open up the file manually

jpeg or png...
i say png is better, but less supported, although its catchin up

and when u go print...y dun u jus print from the psd file?
if u must export it, choose either tiff or eps
jpeg and png r both screen formats which are lossy...
tiff and eps are lossless formats meant for print so u wont lose quality

Nice, thanks for the info ajb, very useful.

If I was printing at home on my own printer I would print directly from psd but I'm not. And I don't think the place where I intend to print it have photoshop(just a small printing store). Most of the time they don't so I have no choice but to chose another format.

I was going to print it from png before but not anymore thanks to you :)

Oh and I believe my photoshop version has imageready.

I dunno...I save images in Paint Shop Pro format if I intend to edit it in the future. I save it in JPEG because it retains the best quality (in my opinion) and most galleries accept JPEG.

jpg is nice...

It depends, still I have to agree tiff and eps will maintain the quality for print work.

png for quality
jpeg if i want to save space
gif for in-between

I save my images in jpg, in png, and gif.
jpg for signatures and screenshots
png for avatars
gif for both..

jpg is for photo-like images (many colours, lots of blending, soft edges, use of complex brushes and/or filters) i.e. paintings

gif is for either animations or images with transparency or illustration-like images (limited colour pallete, solid colours or simple gradients, hard edges) i.e. logos

u shouldn't compare jpg vs gif...
they are used for different type of images
