Alchemy the art of braking down atoms and molecule with your own bare hands and
shape it any way you want. in the early 19th century some people clamed that
they could turn metal into gold and these people called them selves alchemist
but the metal into gold part was never proven and in the late 19th century they
became more useful by there skills of mixing different kinds of drugs and making
medicines out of them. but in today they are called chemist and the art is know
as chemistry and the mixture of comical rearrange atoms and all that stuff and
making some thing out of it but if technology is more advance and it mixed with
chemistry is alchemy possible?
Transmutation is technically possible. Radioactive decay could even be
considered a transmutation. Atoms of one element can be changed into atoms of
another. The process requires so much energy, is so expensive, and produces so
little matter, however, that it could never be practical with current
technology. I doubt you'd be able to do anything like what is on Fullmetal
Alchemist ever anyway.
i totally think the idea to look and make the philosophy stone is plain
ridiculous because of the ingredients needed described in the relic of a stone
left behind.
the carving is later transcribed and the ingredients?
Add a "God" to anything from a piece of bread to a gold bar and voila
= Philoshopher's stone.
funny how these people actually think it was possible...
Actually it is possible. Radioactive elements regularly undergo natural decay
and form other elements. Other forms of transmutation occurs in the sun where
hydrogen is fused together to form helium as well as a great deal of energy.
Will alchemy ever reach the point of FullMetal alchemist? Eventually it probably
will.
Quote: Alchemy the art of breaking

I think you have watched to much FMA. Alchemy is not about breaking down atoms
and reshaping it with your own bare hands. Alchemy is an ancient art of obscure
origin that sought to transform base metals (e.g., lead) into silver and gold
and is considered the forerunner of the science of chemistry.
Early alchemy was considered mystical and tinged with magic because back then,
there was no knowledge of chemistry. Concepts like chemical reaction, ionic
bonding, and many other scientific terms used today did not exist. Early
alchemists were mainly artisans, they tried to conceal the secrets of their
work. Thus, many of the materials they used were referred to by obscure or
astrological names.
As for the philosopher's stone (called also by many other names, including the
elixir and the grand magistery) may have originated in Alexandria; this was an
imaginary substance thought to be capable of transmuting the less noble metals
into gold and also of restoring youth to the aged. The philosopher's stone is
not about being able to get something out of nothing (as espoused by FMA). In
fact, the concept of "equivalent trade" never exists back then. This
concept serves to explain in the field of physics as well as chemistry that
energy cannot be created, only converted from one form to another. The concept
of energy never existed back then.
To do alchemy like FMA is pure fantasy. FMA is just for entertainment and
shouldn't be taken seriously. Basically, to do alchemy like in the world of FMA
would be to defy the very proven laws of physics and chemistry. Think about
this, the properties of metals suggest that their atoms possess strong bonds and
to be able to break them down and reshape them just by clapping your hands
together or by drawing sigils is totally impossible. Where are you going to
obtain the necessary amount of energy to break the bonds between the metal atoms
in the first place.
i have no idea if alchemy is possible but a random fact about achemy is that
load of people did in the 1700's, and the Isaac Newton was really in to alchemy
and spent a good about of time working on it and he blieved that once many
people knew how to do alchemy and so he took his ideas from greek myths
Actually FMA explains how alchemy is possible. However, please do not read this
post if you don't want spoilers.
Although I do agree that the alchemy in FMA would completely defy the laws of
physics it is clearly shown in FMA that the world Ed and Al live in is not ours.
You see Ed's father discovered a door into which he could travel into another
universe. Tihs universe was actually our universe during WWI or II. This door is
represented as that giant gate that Ed saw when he tried to transmute his
mother. Thus the world of FMA and our world were actually alternate universes.
It is clearly stated that in the other universe alchemy was not possible unlike
Ed's world in which alchemy is possible. So for all we know Ed's world could
have had some weird physics that allowed for alchemy.
You could turn some base elements into gold by breaking a few electrons here and
rearranging them there, but yes it would take an incredible amount of energy to
do this. However think about the amount of energy derrived from Nuclear Fusion
that occurrs in stars, and I'm sure that there are energy sources ot there we
don't know about yet. Possibly there could be some source out there that would
allow us to transmute materils into one another, but we haven't found it yet. So
in a way Alchemy may be possible in the future. Also I don't believe that the
laws of physics and Chemistry are completelyt universal because in the 18th
century people thought that atoms we the smallest particles, and believed in
mysterious forces for a lot of what happened. Today those views have changed and
back than the believed those things to be universal and unbreakable.
Alchemy is a pseudoscience, meaning it isn't real, but it gave us chemistry and
a lot of chemicals used in chemistry, as well as processes of controlled heating
and such.
Using the means ancient alchemists used, no, alchemy cannot be used to turn lead
into gold, but I learned that American scientists in the 1940s, during the
Manhattan Project, were able to turn lead into gold using advanced, nuclear
technology while watching a special on the History Channel.
So far it is possible to change an atom to another atom simply by smashing
protons into an existing atom. Man has successfully created a few very unstable
atoms by this process, only to have it disintegrate not even a second later. But
to change ordinary metals into gold will require a process that even man cannot
deal with as of yet: changing atomic bonds.
This is not happening. Stop watching Full Metal Alchemist, it's gone to what
passes as your brain. Alchemy was mediaeval and it never worked. Transmutation is only possible
through radioactivity, which is not something usable "with your bare
hands". Also, the easiest element to transmute to gold is... platinum,
which is more expensive and more rare. How smart would that be? It also takes
fantastical amounts of energy to power the particle accelerators needed for
this.
Stop watching FMA right now, because it's obviously too much for you.
As far as I know, there are only 2 processess for creating new elements form
other elements.
1. Nuclear fission.
2. Nuclear fusion.
The only viable reason for doing either is the creation of energy. This is done
in nuclear power plants, (fission) and Hydrogen Bombs (fusion). If you want
gold... it's your right to dream...
actually, im pretty sure that while turning lead to gold is not possible, the
reverse would theoretically be. by bombarding gold particles with a certain
element or something, if this intrests you, google it or something.
Quote by bobobobof some things it is,
people have made gold from uranium, but gold is worth less, so they dont really
do it much
just a thought, but with gold you can buy a nuclear bomb to threaten other
countries, however, with signifigantly less uranium, you can build a bomb for
the same purpose. i mean, threaten them for more gold or w/e. just doesn't make
sense 2 me.

Thank you. Kiopi is right, FMA is not an
accurate depiction of alchemy.
Alchemy cannot exist in this world because it is based on the four elements wind
water earth and fire which have been proven wrong due to the discovery of the
element oxygen and proved that water earth fire and wind are not elements and
you cant just change one element straight to another FMA isnt real and its
gotten to the point where ppl are going crazy over this Anime Superpower (me
being one of them)
It is possible to rearrange matter in different forms, and with the technology
these days we are really able to form a lot of things by rearranging the
compounds. However, such thing as performing alchemy/chemistry is not possible
(unforunately ''')
FMA has the basic law of chemistry where matters cannot be destroyed or created,
sort~ of like equalvalent exchange but not quite.
In the late 18th century and 19th century, there had been many new discoveries:
of science, machineries, technology as a whole. Many new ideas were made
possible, so i think that's when the scientists (alchemists ^^) are inspired to
think of new experiments and create new things.
If you look at some books on alchemy, you could see their ideas are good, but
with our knowledge of chemistry these days we know many of their experiments
could not have succeeded. (btw, alchemy books are really interesting, it goes
back to all the history of chemistry etc. i would recommend anyone, especially
FMA fans to read a good alchemy book)
alchemy was the forerunner of chemistry. without it, we wouldn't have the
subject of chemistry today!
alchemy has started in the medieval ages but no alchemist has ever really
commited a successful transmutation of turning lead into gold.
the first successful transmutation was in the early 1900-1910(forgot his name)
and it paved way to the making of the nuclear bomb.
even Albert Einstein was an alchemist himself!
