it struck me at about book 10 of the FB (fruits basket) manga, where tohru has numerous new additions to her wardrobe, that everyone of her outfits is comprised of a mini-skirt or a mini dress. come to think of it, even in winter time, she's all snugged up in a scarf, mittens, but a jacket just as long as her mini's O_O
the only time i've seen her pants of some sort was when she was wearing her PE uniform. i find this a little weird, i mean, it's not like the character doesn't have the legs for them, but did takaya intend this as part of her femininity or did it just HAPPEN?

What is FB? can you provide a title properly, this makes the discussion more open to people who may find difficulty in understanding some terms that only fans are familiar with.

Maybe it's because everyone else is a boy or their personallity makes it seem like they shouldn't wear such things as a mini... so she must fuse all her energy of the disire to draw minis onto Tohru!... poor poor Tohru... or perphaps Takaya just dosn't like Tohru in pants... tested it out with the PE outfit and said "bah".... or like you said it just happen to be that way...

Fruits Basket

Devil, Patchy already provided you with the title o.O... FB = Fruits Basket, a manga series.

I think it a contagious fashion habit that has spread to the general anime/manga community. If you notice nearly all female characters wear really tiny blink-and-you-will-miss-them skirts. The only good thing about about Fruits Basket is that, even if Rin wears tiny hot-pants, there are NO panties shots! Which is great for those of us who are female and don't particulary care to see those kind of things.

Maybe the answer is simply that japanese society has an expectation of young girls (anime characters) expressing their femininity by wearing skirts. But to attract male fans and watchers the directors and artists reduce the actually skirt length?

Well maybe it's something like that.

Fruit basket...?
hmm...is it new. I am not familiar with the title.
sorry, me kinda dumb at times.

but my point of answer, isn't it an anime law that all anime characters shall have only one particular dress code? like usually it is only one pair that goes all out for the series?

and i must agree with Tishdon's answer as well.

i edited my response -_-" sorry, i hate it when people in other threads use short slang too, so i shouldn't use it either, but still, what rock do you live under that you don't know what FB is? XD

i'm glad there aren't any panty-shots, despite all the mini skirts (you almost sound disappointed tishdon) although maybe you're right, and it's just tohru's "style." i mean, yuki dresses oriental, kyou dresses... boyish? rin and haru dress punk style etc etc.

well, yeah. Pretty much all japanese school uniforms have mini-skirts :D so thats probably why...i mean even if you arent in school..you are supposed to where your uniform 6 days a week, so i guess she just got used to it >.<

Who cares it looks good on her............=)

i supposed it only stress more on her femininity. i can't imagine her in anything else other than skirts!

devil... fruit basket is a super old anime.. well i supposed... old as in a few years back...

well takaya did admit in one of her "bla bla bla" sections she never found herself good at drawing cute girls, and was much better at drawing boys (and boy does it show XD).

maybe her choice to dress tohru in mini's all the time is to try to emphasizse her "cuteness" and femininity, who knows.

who knows, but i really hadn't notice until i saw the tread

It's like.....anime thing.....all girls like wear mini-skirts. I mean....not ALWAYS but most of the time. Mini-skirts, school-uniforms, or spandex crap XD I mean...look at Kagome! She ALWAYS wears her school uniform, except for the occasional times that she wears a kikyo-looking outfit

I guess it's because she's an anime character - mind you, a main character. You want all of the attention on her, don't you?

But yeah, I've noticed that as well... *sigh* Kind of strange to think that someone as innocent and shy as her would wear that. But hey, it's yet another mystery human kind will never solve.

To ask such question like this when watching an anime is like trying to bring in Real physics into it. And we all know what happens when that happens....

That's a very good question ! Well, I guess is because Tohru's sweet personallity. She is very girlly, feminine. So, I think the skirts and grandma's dresses shows this. She is a very simple person too. Maybe skirts are cheaper , so she has tons of that.

Maybe she prefers skirts over, lets say, pants or shorts. Or the artists just wants to draw in her skirts haha!

Miniskirts are easier to drawn :D

OFF:
nice Gif indeed :D

it's a stereotypical high school girl image type thing. like many people said, it's the usual Japanese uniform for girls (and every girl except Uo and Hana wear them, and they don't because they're kinda like rebels and outsiders). it does send a cute, innocent, young girl type image. I honestly can't imagine her in a longer skirt, because that just won't be Tohru.

oh, she does wear pants when she works at that cleaning place, and when Mine dressed her up :)

Later on in the manga she wears different length skirts... in the latest volume she wears one that is about the same length as Uo's normal school uniform skirt. I think it makes her look more mature...
