What do you actually see when you're blind?

I know people with cataracts could be blind wherein all they could see is black. But...

What if the part of the brain that processes your vision or at least, the optic nerves had been damaged to the point that visual information never reaches your brain?

What do you actually see?

Do you see black, or any other colour?

Do you see at all?

What could that feel like?

If you were able to see previously and then went blind, then you wouldn't see anything, not even black. However, since you experiance sigth, you can construct things in your mind that will have shape and color.
If you were blind from birth, you wouldn't be able to construct a shape or understand color. I cannot explain how it would feel because it is like trying to explain a blind man (from birth) color. It's just something you have to experiance.

Fortunately I don't know what it is like. And hopefully someday they will find a way to make it so that no one does...

I have completely no clue. But... if you are able to see and your eyes are fine, but only see complete blackness, your vision will see illusions. I'm not sure if that happens to someone whos blind.

i m scared....i dont wanna go blind...
I always thought u would only see black or just faint things in white...

a blind person from birth, could probably never explain what its like, so we will probably never know

I'm not blind so I won't know much but I'm guessing it's like when u close your eyes?

I've heard it's like trying to see from your knees. It's just not there.

Well you would see something.... When you close your eyes you see black dont you? So you would probably see something... Though unless we can go into the mind of a visualally handicapped individual, we will not ever know.

If a person with sight closes his/her eyes, he/she sees black.

A person whose visual information never reaches the brain, doesn't see at all, it's like not having the sense of sight in the first place, he/she will never know what it feels like to 'see'.

Well that's what I think. :)

umm ok this is based on some scientific fACT but might not be true.

when people go blind over time(me) there apear black spots in my vision. actually i can play a gme with the spot, make it move and stuff(if ur going blin ull know what im talking bout XD )

now eventually the black spot growns in eighter number or size and consumes ur whole vision.

but it make you concentrate on other sences so it still good XD XD

Nothing probably, one time my vision faded (I have very low blood pressure) and I saw nothing, I just blacked out.

I'm going to assume that you see darkness, much like closing your eyelids. It also depends on what degree of blindness you get into. Perhaps you should ask a totally blind person what they see, or better yet, ask one who used to be able to see perfectly. Although it may be difficult to come up and ask a blind person about such a delicate topic.

i'm not soo sure wat u see when ur blind cos i was blind...i wud not know anything about this website..lol...

ermm...i think that if someone is blind...they wud see like sound waves that guide them away from lamp posts or walls...u know wat....i have no clue.. lol

can we plz have the oponion of a blind person? (lol?)

lol... this couLd be the answeR.. :D

i gueSs you won't see anything at aLL...just likE what others saiD..

excePt if you can see befOre.. maybe just mayBe.. you can form imagEs to look at... XD

just becuz your blind doesnt mean your brain stops processin images all 2gether it just means you cant see out of your eyes youll still most likely be able 2 see images in your mind, but if you were blind from birth you would probably just see black becuz black is the color of nothingness

hmm? blind? well theres a technology to impalnt a camera in your eye and feed the images back to the brain just like hte eye works but i can imagine that there definately soemthing wrong with it

black, dark, nothing else, i think.....
that means no more anime.....

Ok so if you cant see anything, it would be black... right? Not that they would know what black is if they were blind from birth because they have never seen color. So even if you asked them they wouldnt be able to discribe it? Unless they used to be able to see...

I agree, I personally know someone who was made blind from a disease, but because he had been able to see earlier in his life he is able to think of the different colors and see them in his mind. I work in the hospital so I've also seen people who have been blind from birth, and they are not able to describe what colors are like, because they've obviously never seen them.

I would also like to point out your senses is mainly a mental thing. For instance, if you get injured in a certain part of your brain you could lose your sight, just as you could with your other 4 senses.

No if you cant see i think you would see some white screen
you know.....
well im not very good at explaining such things...

you wouldnt see anything, it wouldnt be white or black or anything because your brain wouldnt be processing information from your eyes. its like "what would you smell if you didnt have a nose?". it wouldnt be anything at all...

though I wouldnt really know from experience. >.>

Uhh.. like just black for the rest of your life i guess...
