Usually, you'll need software like PowerDVD, even if you have a DVD Drive (Which
you'll need), for I know most are software based in the computer world, compared
to say normal DVD Player which is hardware based.
I would suggest: www.newegg.com if your
going look for a cheap DVD RW. Despite, I would pay more get a Plextor or
something high grade like that. Still, it's up to you in the end. I'm happy with
my (Crappie Memorex) and it gets the job done. =O
I hope this helps, and if dosen't make much sense I'm a bit tired as
well.
As I know, it doesn't matter what software you use as long as you have the right
hardware for reading DVDs. Just buy a new DVD-ROM drive and you'll be good.
Actually, even you do need the "Codec" at least for it, for you need
the software to read it. DVD straight outta the box will not work on Windows,
for the "Piracy" protection, compared to normal. Still, ATI and Nivida
do have their own software for their cards, problem is... you need those disks
and software for it. Just normally come bundled, so you can have native. Or if
you can find other software like PowerDVD that has the codes bundled for
it.
You might be able to find freeware for it too, but I haven't come across it as
of yet. That's just my suggestion once again. For PC, you'll need the software
by far, sadly. Espically for those "Interactive Menus," if your into
that. That's assuming if your usin' Windows. Linux, you can find Decoders just a
bit more tricky to work, and get going, tho. THey are free for the descent
ones.
Here's the deal. I have an extra desktop that doesn't read DVDs - is it just a software problem or do I also need the hardware? Or both?
If possible, can anyone also tell me where I can buy DVD read/burn external hardrives cheap and nothing above $80?

yabari... I thought so. Hardware and software... yikes. Ah well, looks like I'll be asking my dad to buy this stuff for me.

I know this thread is kind of beaten senseless, but does anyone know where I can get the DVD reading software for free online?
[I've asked my father (in a sly and conversational tone) about it and he says that as long as one has a D drive, one just needs the software.]
