In my case I am trying to extract a large scan with a pink background, first I
erase as much of the pink areas around the central character, then I zoom in and
use a smaller eraser to take off the pink areas, though as I zoom further in and
take off the pink areas I find it difficult to judge whether I am taking off the
background or the acutal image? Thus I was able to extract the image but it is
not clean, so are there any improvements that I can use or change the way i
extract the image

PSP are a very bad choice for image extraction, but not impossible. I personally use PS
