Ok, consider this. Why is it that when people are in a problem eg disaster,
accident etc. they can steal things around them in order to get out and survive,
such as a vending machines and shelves ( food ) . But aren't poor people also
living a disaster the difference is they get punished for stealing to feed themselves
from starvation while people in the accidents can say they used food around them
and nobody puts them in prison. I think starvation is also another problem
here..
i think it's like everything at extremes, it's fine to steal to survive, besides
it's only one or two persons ; the thing is different when people in a disaster
raid stores cause it only causes chaos, and its so many people doing it. that
was one of the problems people had to face in hurricane katrina
Even stealing is wrong I think it is still consider reasonable if u have to
steal food and somethings to stay alive on a disaster, accident etc.
but knowing on the recent disaster in the US with hurricane katrina, on the news
they were showing people stealing big screen TV fancy jewelry and so forth. The
jewelry I can still kind of thing theres a reason for it but a big screen TV on
a disaster zone with water all the way up your hps and what in the world are you
going to do with a big screen TV?!?!
For those guys, I hope they get whats coming to them!
Stealing is bad and there is no discussion about it, but sometimes some people
do things that force others to steal. Also we can "steal" more than
just money or things, when we are causing anguish or when someone kills another
person is "stealing" that person's peace or life. But that is more
like a point of view. Steal is bad, because stealing is one step for other worst
criminal actions also.
I think if you need to steal food to survive then you shouldn't be punished for
it. It's when people steal thinks they don't need to survive like tv, jewals etc
that it becomes a crime. At least thats how I feel.
There's a solid difference between survival and greed. And
that difference is what people take.
If you're stealing a loaf of bread, chances are you're starving. If you're
stealing jewelry, you're just stealing because you want it. There is no
life-or-death circumstances to getting a necklace, that's just wanton
greed.
When you take something without paying for it, it's theft. Regardless of what
the circumstances are. However, the circumstances will also dictacte the
punishment, if any at all.
Interesting idea. I work in retail so i've witnessed and caught a few people
stealing. I work in a discount store so the fact people are stealing such cheap
items is pathetic enough anyway. The amusing thing is these people usually have
the excuse that "i'm poor" or cant afford it.....it's funny because
what would a poor person do with camera film, taking photos more important than
feeding yourself?
It's human nature that we (generally) are selfish and care only about ourselves
so when disaster hits its every man for themselves, people in the third world
countries unfortunately are still being opressed by people a little higher
up......one day a disaser will strike the Earth that will make all man equal
again (if there are any any left)
Stealing is wrong regardless of the situation. People might steal to survive,
but that does not mean that the act is OK. Being poor is a plight that affects
many people world wide. Yet you do not see rampant stealing in the areas where
people are the poorest. Increased crime rates-yes.
The poorest among us are much more likely to resort to sharing what they have
rather than risk being thrown out of their society by stealing.
Higher rates of theft are typically seen among poor individuals in countries
with a higher standards of living. Here the theft is often in the me too vain
rather than the attempt for surival. People do not need a TV or videogames or
cd's to survive.
Theft is wrong, but it depends on the situation. In a civilized country where
the poor are helped by the government (U.S., Canada, etc.), there isn't really a
point to steal, unless you like it in jail. Now, let's say a person steals in a
3rd world country because the oppressive government limits the person to only so
much, then it depends on what he/she steals. If it's food for his/her starving
children, then that's not so bad. It's still wrong, but not every country can
afford to help it's poor and needy.
Its no secret that stealing is wrong. However there is a certain line one must
draw. As some of you folks have already pointed it out. Stealing to survive? Yay
or nay? Can be both ways depends on how the situation is and what they are
stealing. Guess it all comes to how you look at it. Sometimes you need to take
drastic measures to in order to survive.
Steal food - reason on the brink of starvation/no money to buy food/no work to
earn money/ no one is willing to hire you/begging for food or money does not
work then = OK in my book. Well it has to be somewhere along these line i
suppose.
Well, I believe stealing is wrong no matter the reason. People that do it for
being so poor might have a reason, but I believe they shouldn't be taken to jail
even though it's still wrong, they should receive help, perhaps from the
government, like Syngo's point. This might be a great difference, since this
will prevent this issue from happening so often and many people will find a
correct way to earn their money and afford things.
On the other hand, it's so stupid when people steal electronics and stuff just
for them when they can afford them.. us human beings are so ambicious that we
will keep doing it for vanity and stuff. I really hate that...
Stealing is wrong in every single way, but people have their reasons to do it.
Yet we could still do something to prevent this from happening, we just have to
act now.
Only if your are in a disaster and you need to survive, I'd not consider it as
stealing, but if you are gathering jewelry or things you're theft. And for those
street chidren that are forced to steal to gain a little of bread at least, It's
wrong anyway, but what else they could do?
If it for survival, sure. Go ahead by don't get caught.
If we start chop off people hands when they steal in the US. I'm sure there will
be much less stealing... Got this idea from class... It works. Take Turkey for
example...
This is a difficult question. It is easy to call the act of stealing wrong when
you are in a state where you don't have to steal, but there are circumstances.
If you had to steal to save a loved one or yourself, then it is a less than
clear-cut answer. Stealing just for greed is slightly impractical, but you can't
discount the pressures that this retail society places on people. Personally, I
don't believe in words like right or wrong, there are just too many different
reasons and motivations for absolutes to exist.
So after all that, I am right back where I started with absolutely no
conclusion.

In my oppinion stealing is never right for any reason, be it disaster, or any other such reason

hmm, im still not sure like hurricane katrina whether it was ok or not. Guess it wouldn't be right huh :S
