After checking groups for joining purpose, I have the feeling that a lot are death. Dont to mention the members.

Maybe it is time for a cleaning seassion.?
Sheqel has already announced a solution to help clear out the inactive groups. I refer you here. I am quite sure the abandoned groups will never be purged, just as inactive accounts will never be purged.
