Anyway, I do have a weakness for them. Especially now when Gradius V is on its way. You know, all the shooting, and powerups and shiny effects and boom and stuff.

No PS2 here, but i've been meaning to rent Ikaruga.

Aero force 2 (also called Sonic wings 2) is always a given if you find an arcade machine with it. Other than that, I haven't really found a perfect one. There are a couple of rather good ones, though; Ikaruga, Giga wings, Mars matrix, DoDonPachi, ESPRade...

I guess games with a Shock troopers style wouldn't count?

its a strictly japanese series for the most part, though it made a few obscure entires to the US. There was one on snes, don't remember if Turbo Duo had one also.

Yeah, nothing beats playing as a flying space-octopus shooting a giant schoolgirl in the eyes while dodging wierd guys living in her hair.
