I really had no clue where to put this thread.
Anyway, I noticed there's a lot of Western influences in Japan. But specifically
how do the Japanese feel about Americans in particular? Trying not to get too
political here...
If anyone here is from Japan or know how it is over there, I'm encouraging you
to be stereotypical because I would like to know the good as well as the
bad.
For example:
--Do Americans (or any native English-speaker) have a funny "accent"
when they speak nihongo?
--Does the American culture seem boring compared to their own Japanese culture?
--Do some or many Japanese love American media? Such as music, movies, and TV?
Like us with Japanime.
--Do they perceive Americans as obese, greedy gluttons?
--Are Americans also stupid in comparison to their own?
This is namely out of curiosity of how such a different culture perceives a
power country like America.
i can tell you what every single country thinks of America...
"Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation to judge the new media
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the aryan nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones you're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.
Well maybe I'm the ****** America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia."
oh god so you quote the worst band in the universe...
well i haven't been to Japan in years but..they seem to be a little afraid of us
I guess not alot of them would talk to me. The older folks wouldn't but the
teenagers and the young adults would. They like to hear foreigners speak
Japanese. They got a kick out of how well I speak it lol...that's all I really
remember,,and that was like 7 years ago so who knows what they are like now

i just thought it would be funny to use this quote
Well, from what I've read, ONLY READ, mind you, the Hiltons are really popular
over there. Their handbags are popular, and when they visited Japan, they had a
big crowd and media circus to greet them. I guess they're influenced by America
in that sense.
I don't know if that makes any difference in what you want to know, but just a
little tidbit I thought I would contribute.
...-_- from what i've seen heard and read, they admire our
"westernness"(as in food/clothing/music) but hate our overall behavior
and disrespect (bodily sounds )
so basically they would like being us but they would behave their own way in our
place. frankly i would prefer to live in Japan than in the US ^^
franzss i think that's true for a lot of cultures what you say,
a lot of cultures like the western dress, music and so forth but do no
appreciate the behaviour, some morals and a lack of solid culture
Japan's becoming less japanese and pretty much, like the rest of the world. The
japanese (teens and the like) are really into almost everything western, whether
it be brit, american etc. Kinda disappointing for me, but I'd just have to deal
with it. There's an article written about this matter or almost close to this in
Newsweek February edition.
I think just about anybody hates americans since Bush is around.
We could do a countdown how long it will last before Bush expands his warzone to
Iran.
altough lots of teens japan like western habit, style and stuff....but still,
some of them still keep the old tradition....like some people still love to
watch anime and read mangas....but as i've heard...sorry 'm from canada...i
heard that the old japanese culture said like...women are kinda slave of
men...they can't express their opinions and can only obey their orders...is it
true?
I think the Japanese pretty much look up to the Americans. You can see that by
their eagerness to learn English and blah. Plus, the way they like to dye their
hair. They obviously do not like black -- plain, normal and all. And they like
the Americans/Western variety of eye and hair color. So, don't worry, they're
racist in a way, but they like Americans all the same.

lol, well said.
Interesting though, is the older generation still much more reserved or something? I get a sense they aren't the biggest fans of globalization.
Anyone else know any fun info?
i hate america in a way, i like japan :P

I would hate to live in Japan. Too many rules of society. I have a few friends who live there, and I visit every now and then...
Nope, its fine to be there a week or two, but to live in Japan? My version of hell. Hedonistic America for the win!
