Are Ipods disposable?

I recently read on the paper that Ipods are being created for a short-time living. It said (on the paper) that repairs to a damaged Ipod are not worth of doing and it is better and cheaper to buy a new one... yiaikkkss! Has someone heard about this?

. . . that's actually extremely obvious. Battery life decreases as time progresses, so if your battery fails or doesn't hold enough charge anymore, you'll have to get a new one, which by itself can set you back quite a bit. Then there's the fact that hard disks have a finite lifespan; hard drives often fail after approximately five years or so.

So, again, an iPod whose battery has failed and/or whose hard drive is on the fritz isn't worth repairing. Just get a new iPod of whatever generation is currently out.

Hehe yea this issue has inflamed some consumers who used to be told from Apple that they should just get a new ipod instead of paying more than two hundred dollars for a battery replacement. Apparently now they offer a $99 mail in battery replacement or something, from what I hear - I don't have an ipod (refuse to buy one, more like).

http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com/ has a little movie about it. ^^

Alot of people I know have gone through this sort of thing the ipods are crappy what can I say. Even apple won't fix them go to any apple store and try and get them to fix it. It's not going to happen they'll just give you a new one. Free of charge I might add.

The hard-to-replace batery is a consequence of making such a small hdd-based player. Origianlly it did cost as much to get the batery replaces as it would to get a new ipod, but, due to the said complaints, thay have cut back the price. It's still $100+, which is still bad, but it's an improvement. This is why it's important to look into this before spending ~$200 on something and also why I have a flash-based player.

yeah I heard from my friends who own Ipods that they're more likely to give you a new Ipod than replace a part on your old one. I, myself am a loyal Sony user and own a Sony NWA3000 20gb. I'm waiting for my friend's Ipod to break so I can say "HA! I told you so!".

nothing lasts forever. everything has a lifespan, just depends on how often and how good you take care of it. i was surprised when i read the title of this thread "Are Ipods disposable" and then i started reading and realized it was different from what i thought this thread will be about :D

that's why i hate I-pod and to think a couple years back, i would have killed to get one....

I love my good old iPod 1.1 and never had a problem with it.
After thousands of hours of music it is still runnig...

I myself wouldn't mind getting a ipod simply because class is so damn boring, then again I wouldn't mind getting a psp either.

Isn't it that if you let the battery die out itself it'll last longer instead of you charging it every night? Ehh, I wouldn't know the difference. I just let it die :]

I just got a new iPod Nano and I think that the best thing to do is get the $60 2 year warranty! This covers ANY damage. Even if you drop it, sit on it, drop it in water, whatever! And it includes battery changes! Which a batter only lasts like a year if you use it a lot so that will get you 2 of them. So if you get an iPod I think that you should definitely get the warranty. (Disclaimer: Depending on what kind of iPod you get depends on how much the warranty costs. The more pricey the iPod the higher the warranty!)

Bought an iPod Nano back in January along with an aluminum protector case to prevent scratches and a FM transmitter. (EVERYTHING scratches the finish on a Nano! Even looking at it!)

So far, it's been dropped out of a semi truck onto a concrete floor, knocked around in the cab, used in horribly dusty conditions (yay solid state), and driven over with my half ton (an accident, I swear). Works perfectly except for a small rainbow stress point on the upper corner of the display after the big fall.

I.... Don't like Ipods.
From what I read above, the battery dies after a while..
If i load my entire collection on to the ipod, i get sick of my music after a while.
On my Sony Hi-MD MZ-RH10 1GB Minidisc player, I have change my music once everyonce in a while so to me, my music never will get old.
I can store about 635 ATRAC3 Plus pieces of music on it.
The Ipod is too userfriendly.
Too many people have the Ipod, and I usually don't like to follow the crowd around with yet another random Ipod.
Ipods today are stolen extremely often.
Ipods don't have a remote... Mine does. That way, I can keep the player in my pocket and it doesn't have to be taken out to change tracks or anything.
If the disc gets messed up, no problem. I can take it out and put a new one in. My friends HDD player died after about 10 months due to Hard Disc Failiure.
On the Hi-MD Player, it has two battery options: A standard double A or an internal removable Ni-CD Battery. Both can be used at the same time for a total of 35-ish hours of music.
Well, that is my over 50 cents imput...

What happened to my little brother and my friend is that their ipods got messed up my electromagnetic waves from other devices . THey sent their ipods to apple, but what they charge you for checking your ipod out and fixing it is around the same as the price of a new ipod, so you might as well buy a new one. I disagree that you music gets old in your ipod, especially if you have around 50 gb of your ipod filled with music. Howver, I don't like ipods in general because of their fragility and their retarded battery life. Every time I see a Nano ipod I feel like cracking it down the middle....

My friend Lea's iPod broke twice within her warranty--one was a button problem, another was a battery issue--so I suppose it isn't so bad if it's within the warranty. My own iPod is two years old and it still runs as well as before (though it's hopelessly scratched up). Sometimes it runs out of battery after five hours or so, so I have a few favorite songs on my PSP so I don't go more than ten minutes without music.

But I think the important thing is to live within one's means. Can afford to throw down a few hundred bucks every two years? By all means. Prefer a cheaper alternative? Great.

I said to a friend who made fun of me for owning an iPod: "Life's short, right? I like my battery life to match. It's like reincarnation!"
