EDIT:
The old version has been removed...

The resolution is 1024x768 at 300 dpi.

If possible, I would like a mod to comment on this wallpaper as it is my first solid attempt on wallpapering...I haven't seen an Ukitake wallpaper yet, so I decided to try and make one...

This was a manga scan that I extracted and modified. Changes include:
- Redrawing his captain's coat (the lower half) and markings
- Drawing in more hair
- Completely redoing the ends of each sword and "chain link" so it looked better when it connected to the red belt
- Redoing the hilt for the sword on the right
- Removed (from the scan) some markings that were used for shadowing (I wanted a smoother drawing, but wasn't quite sure how to go about removing texture without making things look weird)
- Fixing one of his fingers

As for the background, I wanted a fiery one which I think looks good...I added a "reiatsu" effect which looks like an explosion encircling him.

As for Ukitake's coloring, I don't know what else I can do. I based his coloring off the anime (his hair, clothes, etc. all have their own color -- they're not the same). Currently debating if I should draw in more hair to "flare" out....

well...that's all I got to say about it....

Hmm...nice job coloring the scan...since you went directly from the manga scan though...the outlines on the character definitely look rather fuzzy especially on his hair and arms
The fire background matches well with the character, but perhaps you could emphasize the explosion effect more (without blurring the fire itself) in order for the background to seem like it's interacting more with the character...right now the background looks a little removed from the character

Hope that helps a little...Great job for a first wall!

Since Ukitake is surrounded by fire you should brush in some of the background color on him which will blend the two layers in much better and I think a little blurring here and there on the bg would be good too. :)
Below I have the same image, I edited it a little(hope you wouldn't mind), hope this helps. :)
Ukitake edited

It looks pretty good. I do have one suggestion in addition to ozma255.
Try stylizing the flames to get them in sync with the characters drawing style.

I like ozma's suggestions. Also, there's just one place where the coloring looks off. In the front, where the shadow of his sleeves are, the outlines are lighter than the rest of the image.

Changes made:
- Blurred the background a wee bit
- Redid many of the outlines (tried to darken the ones that looked "light" and "fuzzy")
- Redid some of his hair
- Redid the explosion effect and used mostly yellow colors (so it didn't look like I just blurred the fire background)
- Tried to brush on the background colors onto the character...not sure if I really succeeded in doing so... >_<

Thanks very much for the edited picture ozma255! It really helped!

Thanks for all the help =)

The help that give ozma make it look better, the coloring is nice but i think the outline make it look bad, cause it looks blurred.

Not much changes, but here they are:
- Fixed outlines as much as possible
- Redrew one of the metal plates (the original scan looked like a blob of black ink just fell on it -- just looked very awkward. weird that i only noticed it now...)
- Reworked the "haze"

Thanks Rebel-Soul-Kaze.

Any other tips or suggestions? Thanks for all the help!

For those outlines: Have you tried putting the color layers on "multipy" blend mode?

blusake - Thank you so much for helping me! well, here's the wallpaper with the "haze" layers (the layers with the background colors is brushed onto the character) in multiply mode:

First, I would like to say that I am not a seasoned waller and can not guarantee that others will agree to my suggestions, but this is what I personally think will help.
Yea, I agree with the "haze" layers also; It adds more volume to the image. One problem I find is that the wallpaper looks a bit static. Maybe adding some motion to the flames will help animate the image more. Ukitake also stands out a bit too much from the rest of the wallpaper. Try adding some flames in front to provide more depth in the image (the reiatsu does not see to be encircling him yet). I hope that helps.

Those outlines just won't darken >.<

Just thought I'd give you a link to a tutorial by Tama-Neko on "tracing" a b&w image: vectorage. You may find it useful, or you may not.

i like the wallpaper, though i dont really like the scan you chose. it's covering his mouth but i must say you did a reallly great job on this.

Thanks for all the responses and tips ^_^ I finally got around to fixing it today, so here's the link for the updated wallpaper:

i've added some flames in the front to "complete" the reiatsu's encirclement. it does blend the background better...although the wallpaper looks a bit more busy now...

i fixed the outlines -- like the ones below his sleeves. also changed some shadowing.

hopefully it might be worthy now to post in the main gallery? o_O"

the image is fine but i think though the bg is nice, the style isnt the same and it clashes so maybe if you made the fire more hand-drawn-ish it'll be nicer?

This latest revision has a much more unified feel to it with the fire coming around to the front now. However, I still think that Ukitake looks disconnected from the background. When I'm in a situation like this, I usually put an outer glow on the character to blend the edges more. It will make the character seem much more "in" the flames if you can do it right. Try black, yellow or red with varying degrees of intensity.

I'm not really an expert at abstract/elemental walls, but just my 2 cents.

The contrast between vectored color areas and the rough manga lines is somewhat distracting. You may want to try blending those areas in more via blurring &/or smudging. Some texture may also blend the smooth colors with the rough lines better.

Also, if you're interested in retouching your fire, here's a tutorial that you may not have been directed to: Ningen's.

Good luck. :)

thanks for the tips blusake! i've redone almost all the outlines and added more haze to make it look like he's engulfed in the flames...im going to post it in the main gallery....
