Well then, the title seems to says it all, isn't it somewhat simple?

Overall, in my experience of posting in almost every other forum, public bulletin board, chatrooms, whatever.... I have come across that people on the net are like 8 out of 10 are regarded as "ugly".

Mind you I am not talking only of physical beauty (after all, you can always hide your identity by not even providing a photo of yourself), but of attitudes.

For example, I can say that I myself do not fancy people who are rude, and many a times, no matter how I tried to avoid them, they seem to be apparent.

People who misuse power in the forums (a separate incident where a certain member got banned by a moderator I and a friend have agreed to grant power to for a trivial matter, which led to the member never coming back again because of assumed "tyranny" even after we unbanned him)

People who are generally plain rude and do not understand the basics of etiquette, when given a little advice, will never hear as well as not think about the realities of what we felt.

As well as people who felt the need to expose their self (I mean every thing), for example Camera Whores (camwhores) who go around posting every single known picture ever taken with a bloody camera of him/herself all over the net.

Why do all these people come together? The answer is simple and true, although as much anonymity the net can grant any person, why so does people just are so ugly over all sorts of things like these?

I am asking simply the ideas of yours, do you:
find such acts "ugly"?
find such people offending?
Anything you have to say of the "ugly" net culture, please spew out your thoughts. If you will, show us how you act as well on the net.

I myself hate camwhores and people who disregard the comments I make. I am not a perfect human, I cannot give you 100% accurate comments, after all, life is a lesson that you learn it after you are through with it, what I can always comment on is the little matters I myself have experienced upon, and through these little things I come to understand myself better.

I only seek to spread advice, I know I may be nosy and so on, but that is what I do, instead, with that, I am given "the finger" "the kick on the head" telling me to go somewhere else. Is it just me or am I wrong to even think there is something I can do?

I find such attitudes repulsive. People who don't listen to other's thoughts and opinions at all are among the most annoying people I know. Those people are also frequently greedy and self-centered, have you noticed that?

I try to make sure I stay nice and helpful, and I'm usually also rather unserious and laid back. On occasion, I can get very angry and mean, but rarely. In real life, take my energy, unseriousness, and add in the fact I can be really annoying, and you get a picture of me XD

My message to all: Listen to others, and think about their advice. Also pout yourself into their shoes, and see how much the advice changes. Doing that can make you think really differently...

..my heart is crying out loud...

i have rather mixed feelings.

i understand your disgust with camwhores. actually i feel quite turned off myself! but at the same time... i find them very entertaining. i mean it's really dumb but i cant believe there are actually people out there who are so deprived that they need an outlet... but when i look at them.. i laugh.. it's jus so funny!

its been my experince that people who act ugly/mean on the internet generally are doing 1 of 2 things. 1) they are really dorky/ugly or insecure about themselves irl and trying to make up for that by insulting other people or 2) as in the example of camwhores, are not ugly on the outside (let us at least hope so if they are exposing all of themselves), but are seeking approval for their appearance online as a way to boost their insecurities/egos.

as an aside: i know a guy who goes to chat rooms. and he has his pic up on his profile and on his IM. He is reasonably attractive. he uses these pictures to draw people in and make them think he is a nice shy irl person when in fact what he is doing is just seeking validation for his appearance because he has no personality, and is mind-numblingly boring.

this is such a funny thread I feel like giving a silly answer to your question:

people on the web are generally ugly because physically beautifull/handsome/attractive people have better things to do. They go out and have friends and don't belong to the geek culture.

I don't mind it. I do provide a rebuttal if anyone insults my interests by saying "your whack" or "shut it, no ones talkin' about your interest, why flame mine?"

Hmm... after seeing all these comments, I'd think I'd rather mention why such acts are commited and how do we avoid them.

So why do people tend to put down others or perform camwhores more often than in public? Well, first of, the internet is a very shrouded place to be in; who are you really? Nobody knows for sure, unless they know you by person. You can say anything you want and not get identified and dealt with personally. It provides a wider scope of things to do and say; you can post obscene images, make discriminatory material, say the most hurtful things, and get away scott free, and the worst thing about it is that there will be thousands of people who will be able and will access all the above mentioned.

Second, perhaps it is because that being in forums for chatrooms make someone feel soverign over what s/he says. There is no regard left for any reason to be polite, because I don't know who you are, and well, others are doing too, so why not?

The cause of the beginning of this insatiable behaviour is really due to influence from the excessively-thick-skinned. They say something so often, that people think that it is natural net behaviour. To curb this, we should stress to be more courteous ourselves, so that we shame and drown out any rowdy attitudes who come across us.

I believe that this process may take some time to implement, however, the practices and yielded results remain true; look at MT, our users are generally more polite.

maybe it's because their identities are not known in the net then they can do as they like? it's like being rude won't affect their lives or sumthing and they can just release all the crap they will never say in reality in here...mind, it's just my opinion, for example, like once they are either in the car, boom...the angel turned into devils.
those camwhore thingies are indeed disgustingly rude to a certain extend but nothing can stop them from doing it and I guess it's equality that everyone even those 'ugly' ppl can use and abuse the net

exactly, but does anonymity grants you that right to be an a$$? That is what I often find most incredibly displeasing to know at.
DO you have to act like another person on the net? Why?
I find that most disturbing.

I find that kind of attitude often and everyone just flames at them which I wonder in my mind why bother wasting typing to that person? Why do you even recognize them? To me they are just as the same as a class clown who disrupts class so everyone will acknowledge their existance. It is a natural thing, does anyone want to be ignored? Do you want nobody to know of your existance? It is proven in early childhood by scientists and also remember the punishments as a preschooler or elementary school? "Go to the corner" or "Face the wall" well something like that. My advice: just ignore them it will drive them insane. :)

the following is a simple and yet insulting quotation from the use of anonymity:

Quote:
so you guys masturbate to softcore japanese drawings? you say that an _abstraction_ of the human anatomy is "hot"? how pathetic.

And you still declare that a separation must be made between softcore japanese drawings and hardcore japanese drawings, like someone actually cared (about it or about you), because you don't want your onanist immature sanctuary to be ruined by the sight of a pixelated phallus. what a hypocrite phobia. intolerants.
i really feel pity and shame for you.

Awww, that's so cute! First time trolling, little one?

If I were you, I would've added some remarks about puritanical zealotry in there, because really, as it stands, your troll isn't all that good. Maybe you just don't have the talent for it?

That's ok though. /b/ accepts people who shop in BUTTSECKS over photographs too, and that might be within your level of creativity. This doesn't seem to be.

Oh, I'm surprised. 80 % ?!
I don't even think I've categorized 1 % of the members I've met as "ugly". Even though I'm quite surprised that the first people I really dislike were people I have met online.

I really think that what we read is just a face shown by people. Sometimes a fake one, sometimes a hidden one, or just a part...

I don't care much about cam whores and others... as long as people don't hurt others, why losing time to judge people who just have different interests ? Why by example trying to be serious over trivial things like what some teenage girls think are funny.

This is a great topic Devildude!
Look i think when people chat on the interent( like the previous posts) people get carried away because there is no pysical presence of the person they are insulting, they feel they are probably insulting some person who dosen't really care. It's much easier to communicate when you don't have to face a person directly becuse then you don't pay the consequences that you would normally pay.

I wouldn't say that a lot of people on the forums are ugly whatever that means. I'm not great looking but i'm not bad looking i think i'm average.
When it comes to me talking to people online i try to be very polite though in debate i slip up which is my own responsibility and i realize that can affect the other person.

So in conclusion i think why " these people" act the way they do is because they have no self control and no real punishment. Yes in MT you get bannded but that isn't the same as being brought up on harresment charges or having to face a person and see you actions first hand!

I believe people on the internet in chat forums say what they say because they are cowards. They can hide behind their screenname because they figure nobody can get them. They're safe in their house and if they get really flustered, they can just log off.

I think people is that way because thay must prove they're better than the rest. 'Cause, if you think about it, the possibility of humiliate someone is the fastest and easiest way to restore a broken self-image. Don't forget the fact that Internet Communities are for people a little bit different, who don't think that the most important thing to do is live under the society rules (I'm not saying that we all are some kind of bandits, just that a lot of people in the IC disagree about the way society behaves). So, you can find every kind of people in here: the ones who wants to make friends, the ones who wants to get laid, the ones who wants some perverted things (like sex with children, animals or dead people ¬_¬'), and the ones who are affraid to meet people in the real life, 'cause they have bad experiences. And mostly, these guys/gals have learned how to be rude and aggresive in a place with less commitement. Like Web Sites, etc.

Well, I dunno if I wrote it down correctly ('cause I don't know a lot of english), but this idea is from my final thesis, right before I graduate from college.

Interesting indeed. People online in general can be rude because they don't ever have to come face to face with you. I tend to believe that these people are pretty much non-confrontational in real life and just need to try and impose themselves upon a faceless being online. I actually find it funny though. Nothing like writing a legitmate review or talking about someones show only to recieve the comment of "you are a faggot, you don't know shit about anime, gay homo". I used to get that all the time in chat rooms when someone would ask me if I liked DBZ and I would say no. Nothing like getting called a "Sailor Moon faggot".

I just figure what can you do. Stupid people will always be stupid people...

People tend to be soooo rude! Its like they'd love to make enemies and piss people off in the net! I personally prefer to have as much friends as possible.

Yes, in Ares anime chats people are often fighting and getting each other banned. I got banned for no apparent reason!

Lets start peace not war and friendship not hatred.

wise words, i find it weird how they can disregard not understanding how we at all on our side of the argument feel, I mean, check this, imagine what happens when you have someone saying bad things about something you made, lets say a wallpaper you spent effort on, and so on, and claim that it is rubbish, while under this cover of anonymity, one can insult endlessly.

I am not as to be said amused, rather I am annoyed why one cannot step into the shoes of those who made the effort, and as well as knowing what they do being commented as "fags" "rubbish" and so on, it is hurtful, does etiquette not count in the internets?

I mean, how far is it from normal life can interacting with a virtual aspect be? I certainly see hardly any difference, if you have it in real life, why bring yourself down to faggotry on the net?

well, I am not too sure if stepping on broken bones and glass is a good way to regain your image, after all, one can never guarantee that.

I however find it not the same, when you insult someone (for me at least) it is hurtful, because I just showed I am unable to be civilized within an environment of interaction, whilst the person who maintain his/her calm showed reason and argument on his/her extent, this surely means the calm have won.

I do not like to burst out and I certainly have rarely done so.

I feel is society can pressure you that far in having a little etiquette, it is hardly anything hard for you to be courteous no? Of course, again, those with special demands are often enough.... disgusted by them and their fetishes....

I guess with lesser comeback and results from your insults, people tend to be more bold, however much it is in a wrong way.

Hi Devilude! I hope this can help you out with these worldwide insults over the internet! I don't know if I'm a dreamer or anything like that, I think that people must fight to change things that are disturbing them! Maybe I'm not too interested in this Uggly people situation because I don't enter into chats, forums, etc...very often. But if you like to browse in forums, chats, etc and you feel sick of these people, then you should contribute a little to make a change.

I mean, if people begin to fight on things they don't like changes will appear little by little, I think nothing is imposible, just keep on with your discussions and try to make people understand the situation, maybe you can change their minds. NEVER get mad or insult them back, these things are the food for trolls to get bigger and bigger!

Anonymous Internet posting was originally unrestricted worldwide, but in January 2006 a U.S. federal law made it illegal to make anonymous posts "to annoy".

It may be unclear to some people how much privacy they enjoy (or give up) when they post anonymously:

The apparent anonymity of Internet is misleading. Whatever you do on the net, your IP address is usually used as your "return address" in any communication you carry on. If you visit a website, post on a web forum, take part in a chat, your correspondent (or the remote server) can always find out your IP address, which points directly to your Internet provider and ultimately leads to you, not to your virtual identity you may have invented for yourself, but to you as a real person with a street address, a job and a family. Some web-based services (e.g., discussion boards) not just detect your IP address themselves, but also display it as a part of your posting. As a result, anybody on the Internet can try and hack into your computer.

Also I give you this link:

Trolls (History and Description)

Try to read it all and you will see that these problem has been basically grown by our actual society, BUT it began long time ago, inclusively before the Internet existed.

and i disagree with you both, i know quite a few people who chat online who are not ugly and do have friends and other things in real life. me for instance, i have friends and family and i like doing things outside of the internet, but i dont know many people who like anime, so therefore i come here to find people who do. most of the time i dont think it has anything to do with outward physical appearance, but just a need to talk to other people who enjoy the same things you do.
