the twelfth installment in the nonlinear Final FAntasy series is something
Square fans all over the world have waited a long time for. Squaresoft being
Squaresoft, how come the said game did not live up to the ridiculous amount of
hype it generated?
i mean, besides the oh-so shojo character design and "star wars-like"
storyline, graphics ar4e good and the new game system is appreciated but why are
people left asking "that's it?" don't get me wrong. i love squaresoft
and its babies. i just think ff12 could've been better.
The plot is great, images are awe inspiring, and the gameplay is great.
But i think the inclusion of two characters does not fit the story at all,
namely the main male character Vaan and his friend Penelo. They are just
citizens that have no skill or no influence, why would they hang out with such
powerful people as in the other characters?
I think it lived up to the expectations... but i didn't see any sort of hype
generated for the games.
I'm having major de ja vu at the moment, I swear I've seen a topic with the same
name as this one and the first three posts identical as well. Am I crazy or did
something strange happen?
Just beat the game a few days ago. I also think FFXII could have been better but
I still really enjoyed this game. I've come to realise that FFXII feels like an
experimental game with the new battle system, the licence system and all. It's
also the first 3D FF game that doesn't need CG movies in my opinion. The normal
engine cut scenes to the job admirably for me. I also prefer the
"other" FF production team i.e. the people behind FF Tactics and
Vagrant Story.
If I could make one complaint about the story: I would've liked to see more
back-stabbing like that seen in FFT and VS i.e. you didn't know who to trust. In
FFXII, you could pretty much pick out who's bad and who's good; with the
exception of Basch. The plot development was simple and easy to follow whilst it
engaged my attention. The world of Ivalice in FFXII was wonderful; not only was
the story about conflict, but we are able to have an insight on the history of
Ivalice and it's origins of magic use so we can have a "feel" for
Ivalice. Oh, I have another minor complaint: the actual story time is rather
short I guess that's my fault for spending too much time doing mob-hunts
in between story events and also purposely getting lost so I could explore the
maps, gain some levels and gain some gil lol. Because of that, I beat the game
in just under 70hrs.
Also great to see that there isn't much of a love story in FFXII in my opinion
hahaha (not that I'm tired of them). Even more to my relief, there weren't any
"weak" party members. When I say "weak" I mean characters
like that little summoner girl in FFIX or even Rikku i.e. the ones who keep
whining, not because they are weak in strength. Sure you could say Penelo is a
wuss, but she didn't get in the way, in fact, she surprised me with her
maturity. Same goes for Vaan, who's not a hot-head arrogant prick. Which brings
me to the next point, and as kawaiiakanbo said above, there's not really a main
character, which suprised me as well. And that too makes me happy. Simply, all
we have is 6 characters with their own individual dreams and goals. Their
circumstances are interweaved into each other not so much like pre-determined
destiny, but the characters are brought together as a consequence of their past
actions - a good example is the relationship between Vaan and Basch because of
their connection to Rex. That's it. Even the trailers tell you.
The very last battle was very nostalgic. If you've played VS, you'll know what I
mean. The battle environment and the form of the final boss is the same as VS.
As for the ending, I think it rounded off well. There aren't any ambiguities
that I can think of; and lets us know that FFXII ends and there is no sequel or
after-thought needed. Overall I enjoyed the game very much. There's an
introduction, a problem, a solvent, and a conclusion. I can't ask for more than
that. Currently I'm doing the side quests. What are the rewards you ask? Apart
from bragging rights, it gives a good opportunity to see what this new battle
system is really made of i guess, especially with all these tough bosses to
defeat
Anyway, that's my rant for today. If there's any contradictions I've said, or
something you don't agree on, let me know
