She thinks Japan is only kimonos and InuYasha.

Hey! I just wanted to know what you thought about this situation I'm in. At my school there is this exchange program where 5 students are picked to go to Japan. I wasn't picked but this girl in my english class was. She calls herself a real anime fan and I beg to differ. The only anime she knows is InuYasha. She only wants to go to Japan to buy original InuYasha collectibles and that's basically what she thinks Japan is. I was talking to her and she said that she thought Japan was a kimono wearing, anime loving country.

Do you know anyone like that and if so, doesn't it peeve you a little? Do you know anyone who calls themselves "otakus" but don't actually know the meaning of it?

Basically, she's stereotyping. Yeah, I try and explain to people that Japan is more than that, but they don't believe me. It really does kind of piss me off.
Oh, tell her I wish her the best of luck on surviving. :)

please, kill her xD
she isnt otaku, and if she says she is otaku in Japan, she will be killed, worn her xD
there isnt like here, there is a diferent place, and believe me, its very, very, very diferent xD

and please, tell her the culture of Japan is more than InuYasha and kimonos, the culture of Japan is one of the best cultures in my opinion ;D

Ah....ignorant people...what to do with them...

I'm just tired of that situation so I try to stay as far away from that kind as I can, but do warm her...that type of ignorance can lead her to be sold at the porn district.

Why do people ignore the Japanese culture and focus only on anime? Japan has a very vast cultural area, and I think you should explain this to her calmly (that if she doesn't start to annoy you with that "all-kimono-and-InuYasha" stuff; in that case you should just give up - it's not worth it).

you should take a large wooden club that was from japan and hit her over the head with it.
"see? japan doesnt only have anime" =D
just let the japanese call her an idiot in front of her while she blissfully looks for anime merchandise

Yehs it peeves me heaps. Argh >< Inuyasha is old anyways...and also, japanese dont really like anime, its seen as a nerdy things so most people hide the fact that they like it. At school..many people..have started to like anime..and although i should be thrilled..im not..its wierd to see poeple 'play naruto' and theyr fricken 17yrs old! They cant pronounce anything properly..and i donno..its annoying that ppl dont understand..and coz i dont look japanese..im only half, ppl tend to blow off the fact that i would know more about the culture and language then them..seriously..it aggrovates me heaps.

Don't worry, I have enough trouble with like-minded people where I live. The best part is to have noobs trying to impress you with their vast (note the sarcasm) knowledge on anime and anything Japanese. Suddenly they're speaking Japanese and dropping characters names left and right. And you can't talk along because you've watched it ages ago.

Anyway, yes, I share your frustration. I myself am very interested in thier culture and history and when people starts sterotyping I really want to do something uncivilized with them with my chopsticks....

Whahaha, I share your pain and feel for you. She is either totally clueless about wat she was sayin or was too excited over the trip, i guess.

Rephrase it :"Empty vessels make the most noise"

Hrm..ok that's kind of harsh.

oh...please...short-minded ppl is always like tht, don't bother it, it'll only gives yu more headache...i have met someone like tht too..but he doesn't call himself an otaku....he just know japan is sakura city, kimono n doraemon hahaha...but really after i remind him, he has changed ^^

Sounds like half the anime fans I know t my school. EYah, I'm frustrated too. People like her should just shut up. Wath and learn, cuz maybe she might actually get something. Heh...I'd like to know how she gets on in Japan.

ah what a sterotypical ignorant person...she don't deserve to go

Hmm... what a pity... and what a waste XD

You should just try to educate her in Japanese culture. If all else fails then smack her and take her place on the trip.

Take what everyone has already said and I second those notions. Bleh - *wants to punch lights out for everyone who isn't cultured beyond mainstream anime*

You might want to try introducing your Inuyasha infatuated friend to more anime and try and broaden her horizons before she goes. And as sweet "pay-back" for your indulgence = she'll have even more to spend her money on when she goes, and make sure you specify the souvenir you'd like her to get for you. XD Good luck!

Sounds like your school "friend" is rather ignorant of the Japanese people and the culture. That's the troublle of people who don't take the time to learn a new language/ culture.

Sadly enough, some people show an sign of "arrogance and shallowness. That's how wars between people began because of ignorance and stupidity"

If she knows only the "Inu Yasha" anime/ and kimonos. My word: "Truly pathetic and sad !" If U can talk to this young lady, take her to the librairy, get some books on the Japanese culture and history. Is there a Japanese culture club in your city/ town where both her and yourself can meet/ ask questions of the Japanese culture.

Say again, how does this person get to go to Nihon and NOT YOU ? I wish I could talk to this young lady and explain alittle about Nihon (Japan). Like you, it probably be a waste of time.

No way, thats actually pretty funny :D hehehehe

Well, i'd simply break facts to her or let her find out herself and how stupid she really sounded then and there.

Some people are beyond salvation-its your choice to help her out and break this news to her or...let her keep thinking what she wants and maybe she'll come around...perhaps.

I will say im not an otaku at all...i don't listen to j-music, i don't watch alot of anime(i watch some and when i do, its usually on CN) because i don't/can't download it or have loads of money to buy it...i don't have any anime sountracks nor could i tell you 2 or more music artists...anyways, even i know thats not what Japan is about. i honestly don't care to be an otaku, it doesn't mean anything to me, actually, i don't think much of people who infuse everything to anime or anime related and wanna move to japan and buy merchandise and eat their food and learn the Japanese language...i kinda see them as posers...just stay true to yourself, its okay to like japanese things but to brainwash yourself is ridiculous. I honestly think alot of people get the wrong idea about Japan.

This sounds so much like my 'bestfriend' who says she is going to Japan for university and is going to be an animator! Oh and she even said she was going to get married to a Japanese guy and wishes to have a Japanese child with blue eyes! LOL
It really pisshhes me off, ignorant people like her. I just wish they could see that Japan isn't "anime heaven" and I hate it when they use Japanese words and try using the accent.
I have to use the "I am more accustomed to Asian culture than you" just to shut her up. (I don't actually know much about Asian culture, but hey I am an Asian)

Hey hey, you are right on that one. About brainwashing and been oneself! Geezh... i wonder if the doctors around the world had this scientifc name for it...some symdrome. Ah... check it out at Wiki and Uncyclopedia .com .......lol.

Yeah, some people can't be helped until they feel the prickle of pain by themselves. Lax, fellow Mters, i am one too. XP

You have an ownage list ? *Looks at Signature*

I love Athrun! He is Mine I tell you. MINE! >=] Nice.

^ I do have an obsession problem, that I am aware of, but I didn't put "OMFG J4P4N K1CK5 A55, 4n1m3 RUL3Z! J4P4N = 4n1m3 C3NTR4L!111!" in my signature now did I?
My fangirl-ism does not mean I want to go to Japan and buy all the Athrun/Cagalli/Gundam Seed/Anime merchandise I can get my hands on. I actually want to go to Japan because I want to see something new and spectacular.

You should know that there are people who only see things "their" way until the end when they do it/get there/something happens. Then they will realize it. Until then, just hope you can educate....sounds like the same thing with "you must go to University/College" :P

my friend and I actually call her an "otaku" because we think that the word has been overused and has lost its true meaning. he even ranted about them in my yearbook. -_- haha. but yes, thanks for all the posts. I knew there were a lot of people ignorant about Japanese culture and I'm glad that all of you find it very annoying and bothersome.

I think your friend needs to learn alot more about japan and the japanese culture.

slap her, lol
well to be honest i loove japanese culture but i certainly don't call myself an expert about.. japanese thingies xD
i don't like people like that who thinks they know something when actually they don't have a clue =O but that's just me
