I'm fairly new here and just recently my credits displayed a negative number. What's this all about? Can someone help me?

Credits are required to create threads and or to download images.

More than likely you downloaded too many images- therefore it used up your free download quota and started to use your credits. Read the Support Section at the top menu bar- the link on the right and this thread:
