istaken (and dead), hikari...well it's just ...wrong and anyway she's dead
too... same goes for ritsuko (and anyway she prefers the father) ...and rei....
she's the clone of his mother... it's just...wrong (namely incest)
so since everyone else is kind of dead, i think i will go for asuka
Like a few people have mentioned, he should have ended up with Kaworu. Kaworu
was the only one who Shinji could ever open up to and felt was worthy of his
trust.

I'd recon most of the people would have killed themselves before ever doing
anything(People are weak).

I would think Asuka, Rei is a clone of his mother, and he seeks Rei for comfort.
He did get very close to Kaworu, but he's not even a real person, but an Angel,
so it wouldn't be a fesible choice on that matter. Asuka is really bitchy, but
he seems to have liking towards her, he blushed a few times around her, and he
needs someone with a strong personality to help his wimpy attitude.

Depends on the person, but yes, I think it was more realistic for him to act
that way. He is the "hero" of the series, yet acts nothing like your
typical hero, he was a normal human being. On that note, I still don't like him
even so, but his character was perfectly fine with the storyline.

Asuka was selfish and arrogant, and I don't even like her. Misato could be the
one, but she didn't love him. And obviously he didn't loved her in that way.
Definately Asuka. They complete each other in ways unattainable by Shinji-Rei.
Asuka is everything Shinji is not, and Shinji, everything Asuka is not. They are
even the only two left on the beach after 3I. Also, I cannot avoid the facts
like others, Rei is half Angel DNA, half Shinji's Mom's DNA. It is still a bit
creepy to me. It would only take a slight change in many different situations in
the storyline, for Shinji to break through the wall that Asuka has around her
heart. They are just so alike, in more ways than one. Such as their past; both
lost their parents (to the EVA), both have relationship problems (planned by
Gendo?), and both need love and support (where best but from one another?). I
cannot see another pairing. Even if Asuka is selfish and arrogant, that is in
her nature, just as Shnji's nature is to be meek. the whole point of the anime,
or at least SEELE's project, was for humanity to learn and evolve, or grow.
Shinji and Asuka will affect each other and learn from each other. Grow on each
other. They shall teach other what they need. But, that's just my take.
