Well i think japan most well known thing in the world as not only for its high trecnologies but also their animation.
Words anime was clearly different from the Cartoon.
wat i see is that anime was more story based and also has enhancement in their graphics. but for cartoon it only like a short entertaining and some fuuny jokes in it. cartoon hardly consist of long story line( except for super hero series).
cartoon like the on make by disney was one of the finest cartoon i have seen. it has good story line and also some not so bad graphic.
But i think, they still cannot match with the anime. anime like bleach, one piece, naruto ws widely view by the world. their episode also keep increaing and never seem stopping.
so ithink anime is still better than carton.
^.^
i still watch western cartoons but only a few. i like anime better because i think it's more appealing to the viewer. 4 some odd reason my mom hates wat i watch *i don't even like violence* but that's wat she says about EVERYTHING i watch.

I completely agree with cherry 12, down to the last word. Plus catoons are so fake. Haven't you noticed all the crapy drama in cartoons and comics. Even if its on pupose. I can find better jokes in Anime than you could ever find in cartoons/comics! Who agrees?
I agree with cherry12 there for most of the anime titles out there. Keep in mind that although not much, there are also anime and manga series that's more or less the same as these american cartoons and comics.
I also agree with kazuto on the point of the storylines and jokes. Indeed anime has a more interesting storyline that appeals more audience. The storylines are more down-to-earth for some titles. Even the fantasy ones have a lot of resemblence to our daily life here on earth. They integrate culture and everything we have here on the real world. This also applies to the jokes, they're more practical. I have rarely seen, if not never, these things on cartoons and comic books.
On the graphic side, although I like american cartoons and comics better with their muscles and all (they look exactly like us
), I
still choose animes and mangas. Somehow I love those pretty faces with big eyes,
thin body, spiky hairstyles, and most of all the CGs on animation. Heck, I very
rarely see good CGs on American cartoons ON TV.
All in all, although I don't dislike american cartoons and comics, I love animes and mangas way better. I even like some korean manhwa.
Peace out! 8)

you know what western cartoons lack that anime have? it's the cute everyday teen lovelife stories. lol. two, they can't copy the eyes of the characters; it a Japanese cartoon trademark. Western cartoons are more on comedy and action; they seem sometimes so far from ordinary life.
Western cartoons, in my opinion, look uglier. I don't know why, but it's usually the face that bothers me the most, and all the storylines are generally the same (hero vs villain). In anime, there's always something that seperates one character from the other, one story from the other, and hell, the guys are smokin' hot? Somehow? It makes me feel like a freak when I say that drawings are attractive, but y' know.. :P
western cartoons suck ass big time. i must say most of them are like 90% kids stuff, wait make that 100%. i do not remember any cartoons that was aimed at young adults and the adults. like theatreofwar mentioned, it's almost always about heroes vs villains. heroes/heroines beats villains...The End...boring shit. cartoons FTL...anime FTW.
Yeah Cartoons are kinda boring
I
like the Anime for the comedy, the fact that it can make you sad, no matter how
short or long, not to mentino the ladies are better /gg and the Graphics are
better
the question that I get asked the most is "What is the difference between Japanese and American cartoons?" or "What makes anime better than anything else?" There's tons of differences! It's hard to answer questions like that!
the most obvious difference is the style of art. My friend and I were talking the other day about what exactly is 'anime style' drawing. automatically one would think: big head, big eyes, overall big features. it seems to be more than that... though it's hard to describe exactly what it is, there is an apparent difference between a Disney style animation vs and Japanese anime.
The second big difference is topic. Anime doesn't focus on personified animals beating the heck out of each other with household items, and it's not always about comedy. Anime can range from romance to action, horror to comedy, fantasy to history... the list goes on!
The third, and biggest, difference (in my opinion) is the fact that an anime series is, infact, a series! Unlike cartoons where in each episode you have: happy life, oh no a villan! defeat the enemy, happy life again; in a matter of 30 minutes... in an anime, you are watching a story! There's a plot, a major conflict, cliff-hangers, plot twists... it's usually not just save-the-world-every-30-minute-episode.
obviously my vote goes to anime
WOW so many vote to anime no one vote for cartoon and comics ?
:>
can see the diffenrence between both
Well it shouldn't really come as that big of a suprise, since you know this is a community for anime and manga lovers
Having said that - my vote lies with anime - I mean come on, from the more detailed and intricate stories lines and animation there really is no contest. Sure anime can get a bit strange sometimes, but hey, it's a lot better than the same repetitive style that gets tossed around here.
Now I like Disney - but sometimes it gets too 'everyone has a happy ending' mush that is too much. Did you know that anime had some influence from disney? Astroboy creator apparently love the eyes disney did, and then adapted it to his own.
Like a lot of you have been saying - pratically all cartoons here are aimed at kid - and the quality! Honestly, sometimes I think my 3 year old cousin could draw better. About the only western cartoons I kind of enjoy is the Simpsons and Futurama - otherwise it's just about anime for me.
I also agree with anifanatical - the same 30min eps that round up into nothing and so you have a whole 'series' where practically nothing happens - there is always a beginning, middle and end, sometimes it carries onto a sequel ep otherwise there is never really this ongoing plot that gets you hooked on the series and wants you to finish it.
Anime and manga forever!
Anime is better. I think it has more depth. They delve more into feelings, characters and human nature.
Anime by far. The shows tend to cover more adult matters, and have a lot more depth and intrigue, not to mention characters developed to the point where you actually care for (or hate) them with a passion. I've never been very moved by the end of a western animation, but Voices of a Distant Star had me in tears, and the 2nd season ending for Eureka 7 put my head in the clouds for about a week. The anime guys also know how to mix it up- a single episode of FMA can go from drama to comedy to action and back again in only half an hour.
And personally, I think the Japanese have the upper hand when it comes to animation, both artistically and technically. Just watch Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Simply awe-inspiring.
I think both are good.
But, I prefer anime.
Well, I doubt can tell the difference.
Anime has explain more complex problem (it depend to...) ^_^;
To me, anime is my most preferred choice. It contains a wide range of categories from comedy, violence, ecchi, adventure and also for children. The types of western cartoons are very limited and they are MOSTLY for children 12 years old and under. Wait, WHAT am i sayin?!?!? Like dMp said, it's completely kiddy stuff! To appeal the younsters, there MUSt always be a good guy with COMPLETELY no flaws, he's the greatest and the enemy is SOOO blinking dumb! X_X The plot is so precdictable for each & every bloody episode! Only Avatar the last airbender can show some sense at least how a cartoon could be made. Cant they make shows that are more realistic like Air TV or Evangelion ? Everything doesnt need to go well in the end. Characters can die and new ones are introduced, the badguys can win too.
Only the cartoon comics are fantastic unlike shows. Mastepieces like Spawn, Garfieid, Batman and many others impresses me. I admit liking cartoons like Toy Story and Cars but anime on the other hand are shows i want to watch. Anime can be really funny at times and also pretty dark in one anime. Most have a solid storyline which are very interesting to follow that keeps me coming back for more and more. Ppl who have seen FMA would very well appreciate this kind.
School life animes are also very entertaining. Tenma of School Rumble can never cease to amaze me to see the degree of dumbness she has. But shows that are more realistic is Shuffle! . I never saw it coming, it begins with everyone loving hime and then something greatly saddens my heart
happens
but i learned to accept it. It was beautiful. You dont see this in
cartoons.
I love anime graphics more, they can really show detailed animation with such beauty. What can i say, it could be the incredibly many kawaii female characters or the various coloured eyes, hair and great sense of fashion. All the frames drawn put together made a great animation, it seems so life-like at times.
I have to say anime surpasses cartoons in many ways and i know many ppl out there knows this. I hope cartoon studios would come to their senses and not bore the soul out of us. Man, will that day ever come?
Well im no expert but i think voth are good
is just that it depends on the preference of the people
who watch it
Disney is the world's CGI superpower. I don't know what your talkin' about. Only Advent Children came close to thier talent. In artistic terms, I prefer anime. They are more detailed and they look nice. Have ya seen Maya or Aya Natsume? WOW.
Okay, listen up kiddies. I think cartoons have more mixed racial people than anime. In anime, thier all white, or somewhere close to it. I'm an American and I don't mind it, but where are the other ethnicities?
I like anime best because it has a more no holds barred approach to storytelling. I enjoy cartoons like from Disney and Hanna-Barbera but they do tend to be more happy go lucky since they are actually designed, drawn, and animated with children as their primary audience. I will say some of the newer anime like cartoons (not actually sure where they came from) like W.I.T.C.H, and Dragon Booster are better but still not up to par with good anime.
well sure Disney is good CGI. But the thing that makes anime so unique... is the fact that it is 2D. 3D anime wouldn't be the same! plus, you can animate a perfectly realistic human and have them walk across the screen and watch it for hours on end... but just because its got kick-butt CGI doesn't mean you want to watch it... it's gotta have some good storyline to it!
interesting point... but not a big one... you don't see much ethnic mix in western cartoons either... what I have noticed is the fact that even though anime is Japanese... many of the characters hardly look Asian at all...
http://www.matt-thorn.com/mangagaku/faceoftheother.html
Only in the US you will find authorities forcing popular art media the integration of other ethnic people. It's quite paradogical because, if you really think about it, there's a deep racial discrimination going on there. Once the State recognises the existance of certain ethnies that are not a part of society (which the State does automatically once it includes a minimun requirement of different ethnical groups in art such as movie making and cartoons) it draws a clear line of distinction, and that's to say, discrimination.
Besides, as the article I posted mentioned, characters in Anime and Manga, for Japanese, are Japanese. And there really aren't many non-Asian living in Japan, are there?
I, for one, like anime the most. Western cartoon base themselves on crappy drawing detail, but, on the other hand, have a high frame rate, and that's to say better animation. Anime is right on the other side: it has an extreme detaillistic focus on design drawing, while cutting off the frame rate. It's all a matter of how the animation studio will use the money it has for producing the anime/cartoon.
Even so, it seems like the US still hasn't realised that 'cartoons' aren't just for kids anymore.
I like anime more, one because of the art, two because the characters are interesting, three because the story line, four because it has more comedy, five because the cartoons is always hero vs villan, and six because the anime show more feelings and emotions.
Interesting wanderingknight. Ya know your stuff. Well, discrimination is hardly an issue in america anymore, except in the south, but it's barely noticable. I'm from America, I know whats going on. Your statement had a good point though, about how anime isn't very integrated in a wider perspective. Oh, and no, the issue on the immigration thingy has nothing to do with discrimination.
Hey Gabriele, I agree with you except for the comedy.
They really have a difference in the character designs. Anime tends to have more of a storyline while some cartoons are just funny and don't have much of a storyline.
Anime movies v.s Disney movies:
first of all they are totally different in style. Disney's movies demonstrate its moral of the story very obviously, so even young kids can understand the lesson to be learnt. However with most of the anime movies, you often have to think deeper and look for the meaning yourself.
Anime series v.s Disney series:
Disney series don't have a backbone to their storyline at all, they are just making the story up as they go along. Some anime series appears to be doing that as well, however most of them actually have a storyline to follow-- meaning the first episode would support the last episode.
i think their main differences is that Disney target their audiences as children, so they can't make anything too difficult to understand. also they always HAVE TO place comdey as one of the most important essence in their production. But since anime aims for a different purpose, often anime production would contain more philosophy, violence, and deeper meanings.
