I have started this topic to try and figure out what is the difference between an anime and a cartoon. Is their a difference? I am not sure so you guys help me decide. Lets start ths by taking a show that kind of blurs the lines between anime and cartoons. I am talking about Family Guy. For those of you who haven't heard of it this show is a fictional comedy that takes place in Quahog Rhode Island in the United States of America. It is an awesome show and is generally for more mature audiences which is what I think makes it blur the lines between anime and cartoon, but is it?

You people need to help me with this by explaining what what makes an anime an anime and what makes a cartoon a cartoon. Here are a couple of pictures and links to start off people who would like to participate in this conversation but don't know what the hell family guy is!

its simple really, what makes an anime is where it is made, which is japan, plus it has its own specific style, humour and such
There are western cartoons that borrow the anime styling.
Anime and cartoons are one in the same, Anime is just a sub-genre under Cartoons
plus anime has cultural references, as does western animation
Its a cartoon.
It looks nothing like anime it's a cartoon.
yup... agreed. the characters in anime is more realistic.. i mean more details than cartoons. but i don't really think anime ia something from Japan only. i'd rather say it's Japanese style drawing.
definetelly it is a cartoon! by the way pretty stupid one!
Uh... is there really any question as to what it is?
Dun get me wrong, Family Guy is a blast to watch, but just looking at the art style will tell you it isn't an anime. Character design is another factor. And while the joke material can be a tad "adult," the show is hardly mature. There's little-to-no plot line or character development like we see in almost all anime shows. So yeah, this is definitely a flat-shaded, goofy ol' American cartoon.
It doesn't matter to me if it is anime or cartoon but it is fun to watch Family Guy.
i think its because of the drawing style, each artist has his own style, but since anime and cartoons are diferent genre's the drawing is diferent too
Family Guy is a cartoon, you dont have too put the drawing style in thier i could tell by the horrible american humor.
Anime isn't just for adults, you have to remember that pokemon and digimon are for younger poeple. What makes a animation anime is what cultrual refrences you get in the storyline.
Anime and Cartoons, just like CG, are sub-catagorys of animation.
