I was thinking of tossing in a discussion/heated debacle on what should
be/shouldn't be considered a sport and I felt, what greater avenue to discuss
such a topic on MT.
This stemmed from my thought that the Olympics were bringing in ridiculous
'sports' that should not be considered
sports. The Olympics used to mean something and now it is really just an
over-commercialized crap-o-palooza.
So, in a nutshell my criteria to be a sport, it has to be:
1. Physical activity.
2. Defined winner (not by judge's decision)
This would effectively take out things like poker (why they keep showing it on
sports channels here is beyond words that cannot be explained... I mean, who the
hell came up with such a asinine thing?), ballroom dancing, ice dancing, diving,
and horse riding.
I think that cheerleading is considered a sport. Not many people do, mostly
because people don't generally like cheerleaders. I tried it once and it is
actually pretty hard. You have to lift people up and such and it takes a lot of
strength. I don't really like cheerleaders, but I still think it's a sport. I
also think swimming is a sport. I think it's one of the harder sports. I've been
swimming since I was 6 and it is very hard. A lot of people try swimming because
they think it will be easy, but it isn't. It also takes lots of strength because
if you are going to swim proffesionally, I think most of the pools are longer
than pools that you would swim in for fun. Some of the events in swimming that
give your team more points are things like the 200 yd freestyle and 500 yd
freestyle. These are mostly just to see if you can swim that long, but it still
matters how fast you go at the begging or the end.
I think that the Olympics should indeed be physical, perhaps even strenuious
events, but as to the thread title, what counts as a sport, I'd say that
anything that mentally or physically challanges could be considered a sport.
I don't know how you manage to exclude diving from being a sport. If there's a
sport out there that requires hella stamina and technique, it's
swimming.
In my opinion, if it's physically straining, it should be considered a sport.
i think anything that involves alot of movement should be considered a sport. I
play paintball and many people dont seem to consider it a sport, but they are
all wrong. Theres even a professional league.
I agree with you Daemoro, poker should not be considered a sport. Yea it
involves thinking but you get no exercise and the only movment it has is your
hands.

Any thoughts?
