Most people associate September 11 with the World Trade Center tragedy. But
before 2001, September 11 was already a day of infamy for Latin America and
Chile in particular. On that day in 1973, General Augusto Pinochet led a
U.S.-backed coup against the popularly elected government of Salvador Allende,
and began his repressive 17-year dictatorship.

I hope most of you know the fact that 9/11 is not only a date to remember for
Americans. I find it akward that on the same day that the US helped Pinochet
gain power and keep it through terrorism, the US itself gets it.
So- Do you discuss it when abording 9/11 events? Somehow do you think the date
was well chosen for hitting the USA? What date is more "to remember"
or more important in terms of American (THE CONTINENT, damnit) history?
Well i would say it is plain coincidence that the dates colided.. first of all
its from different terrorist groups.... and secondly it's reasons for its
occurence is totally different... it may be so that they want to remind US of
their former deeds... but i find it weird seeing that the Al Qaeda group is
rather disapprove of the comunist and democratic ways so why is it they remind
them of this particular one related to that?
Agreed. I'll leave my personal thoughts on the matter for something else. I
don't think Osama picked that date for that reason. As far as he's concerned
once he cripples the US, he'll want to spread his extremist views across the
entire American continent. He just doesn't want any kind of Western ideology and
ways of life, and that may very well include the Latin American countries. Of
course he's not concerned about that, he's set sights on the big one on his
"bingo book."
To start off i think it was just coincidence that bin Laden Chose September
11th.
I have learned and heard the US Government ousted a few Latin, American Leaders(
one more famous exmaple would be the Bay of Pigs), and put in puppet Leaders.
Though i did not know the date of any specific event, i find it horribly Ironic
and in a dark Twisted way fitting that both actions happened on september
11th.
On which is more important i won't divide them, both are key parts in history on
the Continent, but the United States should teach both, though it seems that we
in the states prefer not to look at our past actions, especially the ones that
are dark and unethical. How quicly we forget our mistakes, and blind ourselves
with pride.
Great thread. Wish i could have done a better post.
I thought no one knew 'bout this...
I'm Chilean..disaster happens every September 11
C'mon! Dates are just a coincidence!
It's just a plain coincidence
Quote: Pinochet had claimed that
the democratically elected leader of Chile, Salvador Allende was a communist
intent on aligning the country with the Soviet Union.
It's so sad, so many deaths....
I wish I could make a better post....but, I don't feel like I want to post right
now...

Hmmm, interesting of the date 9.11.2001 and 9.11.1973. Of course, the dates are
basically an coincidence. The sad thing is the good ol' USA destroys governments
it does not like or when the government or elected person is chosen by the
people.
One could say the US gov't likes dictatorial gov'ts such as in Chile, Iran (the
Shah of Iran --Mohammad Reza Pahlavi), Iraq ( Saddam Hussein, yeah, that
guy--our good ol' U.S. supported him against Iran in the Iraq vs. Iran war
1980-1988), in the Philippines. (Remenber Ferdinand Marcos ? The Clark A.F.B. ?)
Of course Pakistan's Pervez Musharraf (Mr. W's "friend" for the moment
and ally against terrorism). Even though these individuals may commit acts of
violence against the population, sure the U.S.A. could protest, many times, the
U.S.A. will turn an blind eye because the country in question has something of
military inportance to the U.S.A.
It's sad about the lives lost in Chile. Because under Pinochet, many thousands
of people who did not agree with Pinochet or who were a threat, were murdered.
Many people fled Chile to places included the U.S. Okay, even though Salvador
Allende was communist, many people died at the hands of the murderous Pinochet.
Go figure ?

No I don't think they are related. I would call it destiny's coincidence lol.
