I hear people talking about the arts of melee weapons, but I wanna hear about
the specific types of melee weapons you'd pick.
There are several different categories, including:
1) Scythes/Kamas
2) Daggers/Tantos
3) Spears/Pikes
4) Broadsword/Bastard Sword
5) Katana
6) Sabre/Longsword
7) Scimitar/Egyptian sword
8) Maces/Morningstars
9) Random blunt objects (IE a joystick)
10) Staves (plural of "staff")
11) Axes
12) Random sharp objects (IE forks)
13) Crescents (bladed half-circles)
14) Double-bladed sword (basically Darth Maul's lightsaber, only made as a
sword)
15) Short Swords/Rapiers
16) Warhammers
There are probably others I've forgotten, so mention them if you like.
My personal choice would happen to be daggers -- I can use them quickly and
efficiently. They can divert a blow, and then hit the enemy right off the bat
afterwards. Not to mention, combination moves are possible with daggers,
increasing efficiency.
Scythes get overlooked way too often, so my respect to you for having them as
your favourites.
I prefer longswords and katanas, though.
PS: You forgot about the two handed swords, like claymore (blade has the form of
a long spike), flamberge (blade has wavy lines at the edges)or dai-katana (two
handed katana, I might be mistaken about the correct name, though).
Definitely a Battleaxe as they're so versatile, close and longer range
capabilities.
(I'm proficient with the axe as I used to do medieval reinactments)
I agree that katanas are very good melee weapons, I just think thatthe axe has
much more scope as a weapon.

I thought a bastard sword was a double-handed sword.
Daggers would be my first pick, really. Extremely fast, very efficient. A katana
does weigh more than daggers do, and despite their range, a katana cannot deal
with extremely close quarters fighting. (Also, a proficiency in spears CAN
defeat katanas quite easily)
My second pick would be Double-bladed sword. They have power and combination
moves at the same time. (IE Swinging upper-cut, backstab)
And after all the above, I'd take a katana. Extremely sharp, made of steel, and
deadly.
I prefer useing short swords (the ones you see the hobbits using in The lord of
the Rings), which you didn't mentioned, since its lighter and so more hits per
round due to the low speed factor and you could go on the defence too (ummm
Dungoens and Dragons lingo.........^_^)
I like longswords for most occasions, though a good mace is hard to beat when
going up against undead and heavily-armored critters. Most games I've played
haven't been kind to scythes and I think they're severely underrrated. Katanas
are the obvious choice for the gang here at MT so I'm not surprised to see them
pop up.

What's YOUR choice?
staves. they give me a better chance of defending myself without killing anyone. i'd rather not maim someone too horribly unless i have to.
a wrench.
probably cresents or double-bladed sword...
5) Katana because i like its form

Katana... Why? It's only one of the most deadliest and effective weapons in the world. And no, I'm not making this up.
Second will be scythes... Noctum hit it right on the head when they get overlooked too much, they are an awsome weapon, if clumbsy.
Katana, cept reverse bladed. lol

Katanas rule!

Sabre/Longsword

Bastard Sword or Katana, I like the shape of the Katana and it's very easy to use, but the bastard sword would probably cause more damage
katar
Daggers. For that up close and personal feel.
Personally I like staves.....or the bo I guess. Something about being able to pick up any stick lying around and soundly thrash someone is just cool.
I love swords more, but you can't carry swords around in real life so I'm voting staves.
i prefer my own two fists, but i guess ill go with katanas sense they are badass....
Katana all the way. I even have two Katana's and train fighting with them.
dual daggers are cool :P
oo ... Naginata..
