Every day we're always slammed in the face with what we're supposed to be and how we're supposed to look etc. etc.
So my question is:
What do you think about society's standards?
Personally I say F@#%! society's standards. I'm going to live by my own. I have no plans for a lucrative job or a family. I also don't want to settle down if I can avoid it. My friends all look at me weird when I tell them this, but, honestly, I don't care. I think society's standards are selfdestructive. The way society expects you to have lots of money, a happy family, and an attractive appearance is just ludicrous. It's also self destructive. I mean, to work an executive job that makes you a lot of money requires a lot of time. In addition it's very stressful and leaves little to no room for physical care (eating right, exercising and the like). Stress + poor physical condition = early grave. Then there's the mentality that you've got to be media's definition of attractive. First of all attractiveness is all in the eye of the beholder, like art. Second, I personally think that the media's definition of attractive sucks. Most of the 'attractive' girls, in the media, I'd run the other way from. I mean EEEEEEWWWW I don't want to date a girl with huge breasts, pouty lips, and trowled on makeup. GAAAAHH!
In the end it all leads in a never ending cycle of stress and pressure. The result of which is many, many, many people find very little to no happiness in life. If you don't believe me, try finding someone who will smile unprovoked. No joke or situation needed. They just smile because they want to. For them life is just that good. I will tell you now that not many people like that exist. It's a sad state of affairs, but oh well. Our society got that way because no one wanted to do anything about it, so I guess for the larger part it won't change.
Anyway, I'm done on my soapbox now. I'd like to hear your opinions.
ok.. first i want to comment.. most of th emodels now are very skinny but have actually medium sized breasts.. and there are a lot of "plus size models" which actually look like a majorety of todays population
second i want to say there isn't much normal people can do about the media and such except teach your own kids to like who they are not to only like yourself if you fit the media image. I mean i am no were near a model but i love me because i was taught that I am perfect the way i am flaws and all. That doesn't mean i don't try to improve myself because you should always have a goal.. but to be happy with what you have and to try to become what you want.
but sometimes the media is a good thing... it shows different cultures like couple and such you wouldn't have seen in public 20 years ago and on tv at that showing now it is a lot more socially acceptable for things like that than it used to be.
with a population of over 6 billion you are always going to have people that don't like who they are for whatever reason.. the best you can do is to try your best to mold th epople around you into a more open minded crowd and live whith what you aren't able to change.
Heh, I thought I was a loner in this department. Well I am one that isn't rushing anything, I don't want to do things just for money. Really society is just about the money, and we are put on earth to reproduce, in our genes. But if you decide not to have a family or whatever, you are free not to, society doesn't push you on that part. It's just the norm for you to be married, but today so many are getting divorced, so that ideal isn't working.
The media, it's what influences are feelings and desires. They want to control us, just so we pay money to them for buying their products, that's all. If they make you feel bad in the process I think that's their aim. Oh, and all those girls in mags are not real, they've been heavely shopped to get rid of any imperfections in their skin, sometimes lengthen their legs to make them look taller and thinner, in the end, it's not the real person. And if a girl is too skinny, she can get osteoporosis quite easily and that's not fun huh? Hey, I say the hell with it, as long as you are fit enough to walk long periods, I think that's good enough.
Society doesn't want people to go out of the box, they try their best to contain everyone. Some places are worse, you should be happy you live in America or in my case, Canada. Where our society is more open to different cultures. You can't force people to think the way you do, don't get mad at them. Some get influenced easily, and maybe they want the happy family life. But don't let it devour you and say it's society's fault.
Afterall, leaders have to set standards for them to follow, it's been like this for years. I'm just not rushing into stuff, some people are forcing me to, but I don't think you have to be a certain age and have, this this and this already done.
Hey, society's standards are modeled after the population. You can't do too much unless you have a major influence on people. Apparently, the media is the thing that majorly influences others by setting standards even higher. Don't look at it too bad. Just try and follow your own lead and not become influenced by society. It will devour you easily, like being addicted. Standards such as: beautiful, hot, good looking, good proportions, average height and lots of others.
Just that society is trying to merge everyone into one mind. Where people look at the same qualities and expectations. It would be hard for it.
The bottom line is that the people tend to do it for money or power. It doesn't work out. Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. Money and pleasure, what everyone wants, and is caused to think this way.
Why would you want standards for individuals. Standards are for education and work. Anything else is BS.
I believe you make ur own standards.....society is just a guide line for you. Society lives on their own so i guess its ur choice to go with the flow or to be an individual.
well in anything you should have standards... even if it's a personal standard. How else are you suposed to improve. School and work having standards are all fine and dandy but if those are the only things you have standards in then you are really gonna be a dull person.
I totally agree, why? because i was the type of person who was going to work his ass just to get a lot of money, have a huge mansion, cars and a lot of crap,
but, not a long time ago I open my eyes and see what really life is, is not about gettin rich, is about enyoing the best I can, I\'m poor, but I'm happy,
someday I'm going to find a girl who love me the way I am, so I don't need to follow the same steps as the others, lets try to be originals.
Rock on!
That completely depends on what society you're talking about. Where you live has a lot to do with standards of society. For example, I would personally say that society standards in somewhere like Iraq is really bad... but then, I've never lived there, and am not used to that kind of society. So I can't speak for places I've never been or experienced in some way. I can judge where I live, which is New Zealand... and to that end, I think we're a fairly well balanced society.
society standards are lame and piss me off at times, so usually i would go on ahead and do what i think i shoud do (within limitations and standards of my own though)...in our society a girl isn't even supposed to have fun or go out...and i don't , my parents wouldn't let me, but when i do go out i laugh and joke and i don't care if glares are sent my way, in fact i smile to those people glaring...i know it's an act of defiance but i'm only human...
social standard is like peer pressure. I live next to Washington DC, and in the school im attending, it seems like everyone's social standard is really low compared to mine or really high. It really depends though, on the lifestyle of how you were brought up. Like, I can safely say that 99% of the people attending this school is either 1) REALLY rich or 2) REALLY smart. well, mabey not #2. Its like how I would consider them a lower class, talking about how "fun" Halo is, or how they brag about having "one whole gig of ram" to impress people around them. On the other hand, they probably view me as a "lower class" , which i probably am, as im not as rich as the rest of them and a lot smarter (in my opinion and grade wise). Back to the point, if everyone in this school thinks like that, then people who normally arnt like that will be like that. Its just a way how society works I guess...
i potentually agree with your statement i think that society is....messed up-for lack of the need to say other such things-i've had too many of my friends harmed by its need for the"perfect"body honestly theyre sickly most models -to me-and the media is too pressuring it is littarally everywhere and it follows us wherever we go to escape and when we manage to escape due to the society we must come back for whatever reson that they can create i fully support our militia but i dont want to pay taxes to help them i need the money for food and water and with the way that we pollute everything in our economy were killing ourselves slowly regardless of how much we need we always want more if you think about it some places are starving while others are making fun of how we die by surplusesits sickening and due to the fact that i have to leave noe i must stop thx for listening to my complaints....
Today's society has standards? I missed that, unless by standards you mean not being responsible for your own actions. Today's society is seriously messed up, nobody has any privacy, our rights are used against us and the goverment that is supposed to represent us is also against us.
i don't care what society dictates, i'm gonna do my own thing, and if anyone has a problem with that, they can try doing something about it
Hmm...a little tempermental, aren't we? Yeah, society can tell you whatever it wants, but in the end, YOU are the one who makes the final desicion that dictates YOUR life. You know what I wanna do when I get out of school? I want to find someone that I love, I want to marry them, and I want to have kids. I want to live somewhere beautiful, and when I throw my two cents into the world of writing, I want my work to sell out. Is there anything wrong with wanting that? Just because I want to be a married woman, a mom, and a successful businesswoman, I'm following society's standards? You just have to want those things for the right reasons.
Even though I'm not the social type, or the type that tries to fit in with everybody else and follow trends/fasion, I don't personally dislike them or anything. It is up to each person to decide what he/she wants to look or live like. Every one is unique. However, dressing, looking and acting like everybody else, who is following society standards, sort of takes the unique part away.
Society sets standards too high for our youth. Too much is expected of them. "F@#* the police" as NWA would say.
I say fuck society's standards. I'll b living on my own. I have no plans for a fucking job or a family, an honestly, I don't realy care. I think society's standards are self-destructive. society expects you an every other person to have tons of money, a "happy family", and an attractive appearance. it's just ridiculous. not to mention self-destructive. I mean, Stress an poor physical condition will put you in an early grave. Then there's the mentality that you've got to live up to the media's definition of attractive, but yu know what, the media can just fuck off for all i care. First off, attractiveness is in the eye of the beholder, an secondly, I personally think that the media's definition of "attractive" just plain sucks. Then there's that most of yur rights r used against u, an most people don't evn have fuckin privacy, in other words, there standards are just fucking lame, especialy over here in berkshire, so fuck it, i'll just do what i feel like doing, and be fine with that.
society standards are sadly cheap and full of bullcrap...ha!
and man Natsuki-hime said it better tha ever...screw society's standards...it's yours that matter...
as long as you have standards that is...hehe
society? fuck society. haha. i live up to my own standards and by my own rules. rebel! society doesn't like people like me and you shadow becuase we think for ourselves and have opinions that don't go along with everyone else. and i'm glad for it. this world would be a sad and boring place if everybody mindlessly got along and didn't question how things were run.

fuck the standards of society

oorah!
Don't compain . Because it's useless .
Society is not a person , so you can't change it just by compain . And ask your father this question , maybe he will give you a good suitable answer .
Let me just say, I don't necesssarily agree with the unachievable standards of society, but I think the standards are about everyone mindlessly getting along and doing whatever the government tells them. I don't think anyone seriously would abide by the rules if they got out of hand.
Things seem to be getting worse i say!
LOL
Once I had someone call me an extremist that would rule the world because I said something different for the soul purpose of being different.
It was a proud moment *nostalgic look on face*
Then again, unless you take pride in yourself you'll be chained to society's standards no matter what
Society can kiss my ass for all I care, if you've ever heard Tool's song "Aenema" then you'll have a good idea of how I feel about society
Then again, I'm sure most people here could have guessed how I feal about it eh?
