Well... the title may be a little confusing but here goes my explanation and
argument...
In the actual anime and manga world you can see lots of different cosplay within
the art... say nekos or bunny girls... sometimes you see rockstars, singers and
a bunch of other stuff... Not, only cosplay, but in series like Samurai
Champloo, the influence the world today has, as you cansee in this series, it
touches some Japanese values and customs, mixing them with a modern, hip-hop
like theme... There is also the part where we see the art of some seriesmixed in
with a totally different theme than its orignial one. Influenced by cultural
groups nowadays like punks, rappers, goths, nerds, and a bunch of other stuff...
All of these things are excellent! They show a much greater variety of art and
some of the works that derive from these influences are very interesting
indeed!
Now... with some disscussion topics... What kind of culture would you like to
see in anime? What kinds of culture do you see in anime nowadays? Does anime
reflect your culture? Is anime you
culture? If so why do you think so? Is there any anime that clearly shows your
culture?
In my case, the culture I would like to see reflected in animeis hip-hop, kinda
like Samurai Champloo but even more hardcore and focused on the hip-hop culture
itself...
I would like to see some examples of latin culture in anime... That's gotta be
fun! Maybe... brazilian culture: they're the friendliest, and nicest people in
latin america I gotta say, they're also the best people to party with!
Woohoo!
Well I can say surely yes, since people usually choose anime that reflect
themselves. Means that it shows what u like and undirectly also shows who u are,
n that includes ur culture
You realise of corse that this is a PhD topic? The transcendence of culture in anime today. Even then it is way
to broad for a single Doctorate Degree.
I was once seriously considering doing a Doctorate thesis on the Appleseed
manga! As a scholar of classical mythology and history I would of course only
focus on all the classical cultural references in this manga. Gaia, Tartaros,
(even) Briarios, and, of course, apple seed.
Otherwise I could recommend doing a D-thesis on all the Biblical references in
Evangelion. You could narrow it down to Rabbanical philosophy, the
Kabbalah...the Angels.
I recently watched Fate/Stay Night and I was intrigued at what they made of all
the heroes - Hercules, King Arthur (!), and Gilgamesh (which, by the way, is one
of my all time favorite heroes and I did not like what they did to him in this
series!).
As a Westerner living in South Africa I love seeing Japanese culture and history
in anime. But, on the same level, as a Westerner living in South Africa I love
seeing what the Japanese makes of my own culture and the base cultures
(Biblical, Classical, etc.) behind that.
