Racism in South Africa - what are we holding on to?

As a South Afrian citizen I am deeply disturbed by the on going racism that it running our country. We as a country have suffered severly in the apartheid era. That was 12 years ago when democracy was declared. As part of the new youth I dont understand why there is stil this constant race battle between us.
We are all equals, some have better advantages than others but yet we all live in a constantly critisized environment. I think its unnecassary to continue something we had absolutely nothing to do with. Instead of thriving in the past - in all the bad things that happened - why dont we all just stand together and make the better of this daily issue!

unfortunately, you really can't do anything about it, humans are evil and so be it...it's just the way we are meant to live and......ya......it's just people, they really are too evil, so don't bother trying to change them, they may listen to you for one or two days, but later on, hmph...they're actually back to their evil selves.....to bother my dear, this is life, we just have to live on, and this life is all a test it's not like we're living in it forever, so until then....we are going to see a lot.

Racism is a mindset. As such, it will take time before it subsides to a degree where one can effectively be equal. Even in the US, forty years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, racism is still a problem. Only a few weeks ago the Supreme Court heard a case on the controversial issue of affirmative action. We still see in the news acts of unjustified violence by white police officers against African Americans. To think that the US fought a civil war a century and a half ago.

So it's not surprising that South Africa is still struggling with its demons. Everyone who grew up under Apartheid will undoubtedly have some vestige of their upbringing left in them, however progressive they are. One's upbringing cannot be turned off with a switch. The only solution is to continue to keep the problem of racism and inequality at the forefront of national attention in South Africa. Consistent effort succeeded in the US in the 1950-60s. It will succeed in South Africa, given enough time.

Racism and other prejudices will unfortunately always be a problem as long as there are those who believe themselves to be better than others for any specious reason (race, religion, age, sex, etc...). This is the way it is. Will it always be this way? I don't know, but I am pretty sure unfortunately that it will continue for a long time from now

Racism, is not something your born with. its something that was set into your head by other influential characters. In order to rid the world of racism, you first have to rid the old generation first since they created the entire ideal known AS racism. Nazis, KKK, the Taliban, you name it. They all have prejudice over something. You can say that the world we live in is fair. But there will still be people who don't care.

I'm also a South African and I admit that after 10 years of reverse Apartheid I've kinda gotten used to it (in the same way you get used to a sexual disease - you have, you can't get rid of it and it impedes your life a whole lot). Its either leave or make the best you can - which isn't much in the circumstances.

I don't want to depress myself all over again (its 30 minutes past Christmas), but I kinda let loose in this thread a while ago: Patriosm of an Evil Past.

Racism is endemic all over the world. It permeate all strata, from country to country, race to race, people to people, male and female etc. Like Bluesophia said, we are not born into it but taught by someone who has influence over us. It is so tempting to go for an eye for eye, tooth for tooth, but naturally that will not solve the problem. Once you have mindset of superiority just because of race and appearance, it is very difficult to force a change.

I guess we will always have issue with racism because of man's ingrained nature to feel superior.

thanx for all ur posts. It is a problem for me because my family is racist, yes i was raised in such a household but i never approved of the "kaffer" word that my father uses on a constant level. i stil dont. i have so many native friends that it breaks my heart to see how differently they get treated just because they have a dark skin color....its disgusting. the white man is indeed a selfish, evil being. i dont care how long its bn going on, and yeah in upbringing it rubs off alot but i wanna start seeing a difference and not just the same comment everyone gives me on this subject....if we all just stood up against it and really come together as one...dont u think we can make some sort of a difference?

I applaud your stance. I'm not white. I'm oriental. I have had issue with people in the past but never have I associate my dislike as race issue but person-to-person issue. Honestly, how much better a world would be if judgement can be based on ability to do what you are assigned to do well rather than skin color, nationality and gender.

hmm i think if you woul wipe an old generation where everyone is prejudiced and just keep the selected few who are all peacelovers, probably a new generation would be more peaceful and openminded than this, but even during childhood, we observe the various prejudices around us and the young ind takes it as something natural...if you are born to parents who are racist , the kid almost always comes out racist...hahaha but it is impossible to wipe out almost half the earth...so we settle with either dealing with the various prejudices (i mean there is even the lame one where people are prejudiced against left-handed people...that was one of the lamest things i ever heard...i mean are people sinking so low?!) or just ebing prejudiced yourself...haha

and judgement should not be based on anything...no offense to anyone...but people are different as much as they are like, sit back and enjoy the differences, learn from them...appreciate them i guess...hahah that is what i do...lools

Yeah...... but humans can't overlook something like color or ethnicity

Something is wrong with racists I think. But well sometimes you can't help but feel different toward different races. For example, Spanish people treat you bad and you start to hate all Spanish people. Don't be offended, it's just an example and I don't think Spanish people are bad. Although the law say everyone is equal but I still can see the discriminated treatment between races.
