I was wondering what exactly are textures, and how can i use them in my art?

Textures is a way of depicting the feel or depth of an object. Example: A ton of evenly spaced thin lines to show something that has a rough feeling, little shadowing showing not much change and steep. Thicker lines and more shadowing showing something more taperd and less ridgy i.e. a washboard. Dots to show that something has all these little bumps, waves in the hair. Anything to add more realistic, 3d feel to a 2d object. Usually using shapes, lines, and shadowing.

There are sites that give you premade textures, like in this thread: Textures

These can be added into your Photoshop where you can make your art from, note that defferent versions of Photoshop has different ways to operate ;)

How to use textures, well, depends on what types of textures you're talking about. For a uniform-type texture, I usually just fill a new layer with the desired texture, and play around with the layer blending modes. You can also work textures into your art by treating it like a stock photo and do some photomanipulation (like using masks, blend modes, painting over bits, etc).

hi i need some help with photoshop regarding textures and i thought this would be the appropriate thread to post about it. i'd just like to know how to create that texture with the bunch of horizontal lines running across kinda like the lines u see on television sets. i looked all over and couldn't seem to find it any where in photoshop. first time posting i hope i didn't break any rules.

-thanks
