I mean, suppose you were a stranger to the Japanese language, do you find it normal that you're spending your time listening to music that you can't understand just because you watch anime? (by the way, I like listening to anime OSTs. My mother was the one who said this. :D)

So what do you think? I'll enumerate my reasons if I get any feedback :)

If you ask that question...... why do you even live?
There is no purpose for anything we do here..... we just do it if we want to
Nobody forces us to do anything, if we like it, we see no harm doing it

True, but then again listening to music is not as existential a topic as your "purpose" in life. What I'm trying to find out here is what makes you want to listen to this kind of music. Saying that, "I listen to *insert song here* to relax" and "I like listening to *insert song here* because it's relaxing" are two different assertions, if you think about it. :)

It has equal value as purpose in life.......
I listen to "Watever song" because my brain tells me it's better than other crap songs

I watch anime and listen OST is just for entertainment...

Another,If you in low,you can be cured by anime,I think...

Some of the anime OSTs I listen to are just music without the vocals. I had my mom listen to some the other day, she told me... "wow, that doesn't sound like *typical* anime music."

I love my OSTs... they really rock. That, and Steve Conte is awesome!

So..... what does this prove?

vatican92: what I'm saying is that thinking of a reason why you listen to music need not be as complicated as thinking Why am I in this world? :) Besides, you said that you listen to it because you think that it's better than the other crappy songs, and that's good enough for me :)

Hmm.. anymore? :D

Seariously, what other music can you find in such large amounts...for free....constantly available......never ending....and have the best lyrics like...."March Forth and Prove the Justice of our Culture" Lol ;)

Anime Music FTW
The Pillows IMHO

Lolz. :D Come to think of it, most of my anime mp3s are downloaded, >.< Setting aside the few CDs I buy for collection purposes. ^_^

Quote by Kytel"March Forth and Prove the Justice of our Culture" Lol ;)

Heh. I don't know whether to laugh or be inspired :D

Not sure if i misunderstood the topic, but I like anime OSTs mainly because I DON'T understand the language. I find lyrics distracting sometimes. So, I like songs in languages I don't understand. But classical music is just too... erm classy for me. =)

Nope, you got it right ;)

I feel that way too though, That one of the reasons I prefer this kind of music rather than the ones that I can understand is the fact that I don't wan't to spend so much energy analyzing the content of the song.. Dunno.. Some people find it weird though.. >.<

Well, I always look for the translations of the songs I listen to, also, I try to find more songs from the same group or artist, I even consider J-Rock as my favorite music genre.... And if you come to think about it deeply, they really make us feel what the song is about... No need to really understand it...

well^^ the first time i listened to anime music i thought it was really goog!^^ but i didn't really understand (of course...). but know i understand much what they say and i sing oft to it too^^ (strange?)^^

i listen to anime music because, like any other music i listen to, i think they're GOOD for my soul.

that's ultimately it. :)

I just really like them.

Actually, a lot of the songs I listen to are from anime but are instrumentals. Which obviously don't require translating, and which I find particularly beautiful when they involve pinao and/or violin.

I understand a very small amount of Japanese. Not enough to carry a conversation, but usually just enough to figure out what a song's messege might be. In any case (and even if I understood not a word of Japanese), I simply find somgs beautiful. I think it's a little like looking at art. I've never been good at art myself, I don't take art as a subject at University, and I don't know any of the technical terms for discussing art. But I don't think such things would limit my appreciation of certain kinds of art; I don't need to know the terms to find a piece of artwork beautiful. The same goes with music, and I find a lot of anime songs - Japanese words or not - beautiful.

I find anime songs having a nice melody to it. And because I don't really know the language, it allows me to feel the song better.

Personally I like any song, or type of song, that, wel, I like. It doesn't matter from what culture it originates - sure, it may take some time to get used to it, it may be an acquired taste, but you don't have to be bound to a certain taste.

I personally can't stand my culture's own "traditional" music and some of the mainstream music that's pumped out of the USA seem overrated. I have a very specilized taste in music. Mu biggest collection consists of OST's, but I also listen to music in other languages.

You get good and bad music in any language or culture. Just because you're from a different culture doesn't mean that you can't apreciate another culture's good music.

Anyway, what does your taste in music has to do with a reason for living?

Actually that question remains unanswered :D I assume you asked that question based on the little byplay above between me and vatican. :) (Correct me if I'm mistaken)

Hmm.. So I see..
Let me ask a follow-up question: Do you think the quality of the anime music that you listen to is better than the ones that you're accustomed to? (e.g. mainstream music in your country etc.)

Good music doesn't need to be in the right language to convey its meaning. ;)
...I grew up listening to music I couldn't understand, like Latin, Thai, Spanish... I guess I'm used to it.

Besides, I can't understand lyrics in my native languages (English and Mandarin) so I don't see how Japanese (or other foreign language) would make any difference to my musical enjoyment.

As for the new question... Is the quality better? In the words of Duke Ellington, If it sounds good, it's good.

Ever since I first started watching anime, I've been listening to anime-related music, and now, I've also taken a liking to J-pop too XD But then again, I also listen to Korean and Chinese music, despite the fact that I don't understand the language (well except for chinese *cantonese* , I'm chinese, but don't understand the language very well ^^;;) I find many of the anime songs that I listen to quite catchy and lovely (i.e. the music in FMWS, GS/GSD). I guess I listen to it for enjoyment mostly XD

Interesting.. I do admit that somehow some of the more popular songs in my country have pointless lyrics, (Yes, Its true..) and maybe that's part of the reason why I prefer listening to foreign songs. I've yet to see a band in my country these days deviate from the usual arrangement of 3 guitars, and a drumset.

that's true, most of the popular songs that I listen to do have pointless lyrics, which makes them fun to listen to sometimes XD Whenever I feel depressed or mad, I always tend to listen to foreign songs, like chinese or japanese songs. I don't know why, but it does make me feel better ;)
