Or the first DVD atleast. It all happened when I was going to pick up another
DVD to expand my collection. My hand wavered over Azumanga when I saw it's
rating. MA 15+. A few shelves down I saw GTO, rated M. Then I said to myself,
"Those guys on the Australian Censorship Board must be smoking crack
again..." Aparantly it won this rating because of Kimura's pool
episode.
Pool episode: Girls in swimsuits, refers to breast sizes, and Kimura being...
well... himself (perverted in a closet sort of way if you haven't seen
Azumanga). Rated MA 15+
GTO: Sexual references in just about every episode. One episode has Onizuka
spanking school girls tied up with microphone cords without their skirts on as a
form of punishment. Do I need to go on? Rated M.
Anyone find some inconsistancy here? Oh, by the way, when the second volume of
Azumanga Daioh came out, it was rated G. There are some seriously confused
officials out there.
Personally, I think the rating isn't completly off, I do believe that you have
to have watched some anime before it to understand some of the jokes. I think
the reason behind the rating is off though.
it's always Kimura's fault
the rest of the series is nutty and kooky, but i loved it, i'd give it a pg
rating even with that scene where they mute out what Nyamo told them in the
beach house
Really? Azumanga Daioh is rated MA? GTO obviously desivers a M, what with all
the perverted jokes. Couldn't they of just edited that scene out? People are
going to be less confused if the episode was shroter rather than just not
editing the scene and rating it an MA.

Ok everyone, this scene from an episode of GTO(Graet Teacher Onizuka) may seem
dirty but there was a very good reason Onizuka spanked those girls. Those girls
were bullying this kid around for years and rapped him for fun. So those girls
got what they diserved from their teacher, Onizuka. Whew, that was close.
Careful there Katzbalger, you almost made my favorite anime look bad, but you're
right it should be rated M.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love GTO too. I
was just stating facts too. But the fact is, if some person who finds this kind
of stuff offensive walks in while you're watching it, a bad rep gets slapped
onto you. However, if someone walked in on Kimura talking about his
"leaking pipe", I think the easily offended person would just say
"wtf" and leave it as that. They might even sit down and enjoy the
rest of the episode too.
(By the way, I'm surprised that people are actually replying in this forum now,
seeing as I posted it about 2 months ago....)
just as an aside and not entirely on the subject, I notice that MadMan tried to
pre-empt the OFLC for Puni Puni Poemi by giving it an R rating, then it actually
got an ma... this kind of proves the point. If Puni Puni Poemi can get an MA (3
year olds in cages and all) what is Azumanga doing in the same category!!

I actually bought Puni
Puni Poemie. It had R slapped on it. Though, I could understand PPP being rated
r....
I really don't see why Azumanga Daioh would even get this type of rating. At
most I think it should get a PG or maybe a pg-13 rating but a ma15+ it just
doesn't make that much sense
They usually have different commities that rate the shows, therefore two would
have a different commitee from three and so on. As for the rating, the commitee
that rated that specific one was probably unaware of the comedy in the show.
Azumanga Daioh is a innocent show in the highest regards.
I live in Australia (Sydney) and I'm not surprised. For years this ridiculous
bullshit has been going on and on and the only thing I can do is frown and smile
at the same time. Haha mind you, I love that pool episode especially when Kimura
starts talking about his garden hose. Hilarious.
The OFLC (or whoever the classification organization are - I hope they die)
aren't on crack, they're just a bunch of old poops who are still stuck in
yester-century and don't what's good for the country. Or then again, you may be
right lmao.
Yeah, seems a bit harsh, then again, censorship boards oft are. Still, you don't
get much cleaner than Azumanga, so tis a pity they're so strict about it.

Too true... but yes, Madman slapped R18+ stickers on Puni Puni Poemi, and it was
eventually classified as MA instead.
The ratings for Azumanga Daioh have been a tad odd here in Australia thought...
the first four volumes are rated, in order, MA, G, M, PG. I haven't seen much of
the show personally (too many other things to buy right now ^^) but there's no
way I would have given Volume 1 an MA rating. When up to Medium Level Sex Scene
and Medium (occasionally High) Level violence, Nudity etc. are given MA 15+
then... well, giving that rating to Azumanga seems a little overdone,
really.
Amusingly enough, all of the online cover images (fbo, AtlanticDVD, even Madman)
give it a rating of PG for Medium Level Violence, whereas Madman's catalogue
data lists it as MA for Adult Themes. Ah, I love Australia's classification
laws. They really warm my heart.

Oh, my bad. I was being a little narrow minded back there. Almost every anime
watcher I know think I'm talking about motorcycles when I mention GTO.
Wait you posted this two months ago? wtf? Don't old posts get replaced by new
ones around here?
I think that makes some sence, AuzManga has some sex refrences to it. So for a
young child, say 10 to watch it, their mom/dad would be like "wtf is this
shit your watching!" Then again, I dont see many kids getting carded to buy
anime in stores I
have, when I was younger, was never carded when buying anime from Ah my goddess,
thats lite romanace, to Bio Hunter thats some fuckedup anime. Donno hows it over
their though.
At the greek TV, Dragonball Z was rated as suitable for all ages, even though it
has lots of violence (and it hadn't any deleted scenes, like happened on TV of
usa). So, if they see the cute characters of Azumanga Daioh, I bet they would
rate it the same.

That rating, I believe, is a total aberration of what AzuDai's target audience is for. Total unnecessary aberration.
Personally, I think the rating isn't completly off, I do believe that you have to have watched some anime before it to understand some of the jokes. I think the reason behind the rating is off though.
