Smoking, A Humans' Necessity?

Hello, everyone :)

Recently, a ban on smoking was announced in my university. However sadly, this rule is always broken by students openly, It's not even enforced properly, because some lecturers themselves are smokers! x_x
Sometimes whenever I saw some people smoking, I realized they actually smoke more than 5 cigarettes in half an hour!

I'm pretty sure you all know this: smoking has nothing good. Obviously it doesn't have Vitamins nor minerals. Yet, people smoke like it's a drug. Yes...... like a legalized deathly drug >_< I will not be surprised if I ever see a doctor, or a civil servant smoking X-P

Ever wonder about that? (Note: some people can't live without handphones, but at least handphones is important for portable distant communication. But, smoking is good for nothing X-P )

This is actually very true.

For example, my own dad is a very heavy smoker, it tends to be so annoying sitting there and u noticing the ashtray being filled with all the cigarettes, more worse cigars too(they smell so strong n bad ^_^'). >.<

Some people actually start it out as a joke, for example one friend telling another to try it out.

Most of the times, almost most of the people who smoke and I ask them why they smoke, it's for anger relief, most of the times it's for that reason, again it revolves around psychology actually.

Normally we all have something to make us feel at ease if angry, some of us when angry would just go and sit alone(like me XD) and stay away from everyone(to prevent from saying something one isn't supposed to say) others (most teens) would go to their room, lock the door, and music on very high volume, and well a number would go to the rooftop and start smoking.
Basically, it would just start out without the person knowing it would lead to addiction(thinkin hey it's only once i will be smokin just for a moment, won't do any harm) but as time goes by, the number of cigarettes smoked would gradually increase, and it would actually become a necessity.

Actually, just like you said, a civil servant smoking, a lot of people in the poor societies, th money they make at the end of the day would be wasted on cigarettes(for those who don't consume drugs, cause it's even the same case for drugs too) and it's just so pitiful to realize it, it's like "You've been working so hard for the whole day! all the hard work and sweat, u'r wasting it on something that in the end will be wasting you! (because wasting money on cigarettes, when in the end it will waste your own life, how sensible can people get >.<)

(haha, i am definitely one of those people who can live without handphones, it gets my parents pissed off "why won't u at least charge it! do we even have to charge it for you *and they end up charging it definitely XD* X-P)

For these kind of goods, basically it would start out as pleasure (or even those girls who start smoking because they think it's what you call *cool* so foolish) and then ends up as an addiction which definitely is lethal.

Rules are made to be broken, ever heard of that? XD

Yeah, it's strange how people smoke so much. I think it's something social, some people are like... "weak" regarding social customs (or something like that), like drinking alcohol even if its taste is bitter. Personally I don't like either of those, I think it's a personal choice, if they don't do it in public places or with people that don't like it around.

Smoking, of course, is not human's necessity. It's just human's legal form of drug, like you mentioned.

Quote by Toya999Most of the times, almost most of the people who smoke and I ask them why they smoke, it's for anger relief, most of the times it's for that reason, again it revolves around psychology actually.

Yeah, it usually revolves in psychological problems, for example stress and anger. But mostly it's because of friends, that normally make it happens.

Parents, for example, really don't care on smoking effect on health. Basically, it's like a pleasure, in their free time.

Not really rules going to change people's minds, but what people want to change their own mind. They know which are good, which are bad. Yeah, personal choice, which surely reflects their mentality.

Smoking is gross. Period. I mean, it's okay with me if you don't mind your clothes smelling like crap, your teeth being yellow, your lungs becoming shriveled, your lungs filling with tar, or developing a hole in your neck over time. As you probably tell, I'm not a smoker.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not some sort of Holy Roller that will try to convert smokers. I'm friends with a number of smokers, each of whom have their own reasons for smoking. I treat smokers the same as non-smokers. However...Don't try pushing that crap on me (for some reason, some people tell me to smoke even though I tell them explicitly that I have and never will smoke).

From what I've heard and learned, at first smokers smoke to relieve stress, act cool, wear off pure pressure, or for other reasons. But then certain chemicals in the cigarette like Nicotine makes them get addicted to smoking. So later what they really need is not the smoke or cigarette, but the Nicotine. The smoker(s) might be well aware of the potential harm, but they just can't help it. In certain ways, you could probably say cigarettes and tabacco are actually drugs. XD;;

Again, I'm not sure if I'm even half correct or not. ^_^'

I know loads of Civil Servants who smoke. More oftne than not it's because of the work that drives them to it.

Here in the UK you're no longer allowed to smoke in any enclosed work place... which is ridiculous because pubs and bars are places for people to go and relax. Have a drink & a fag and just chill.

Can't do that any more unless you want to freeze outside.

The government introduce higher taxes on tabacco products and introduced this law, but they rely heavily on the income they make from the tabacco companies. If everyone suddenly stopped smoking then they'd raise all our other taxes in order to compensate or the lost revenue.

As for Chain Smokers (those people you see smoking 5 in an hour) they're addicted. If you've ever seen someone try to give up smoking you'd sympathise for those who would rather live with the addiction than go through the withdrawal symptons.

At the end of the day banning smoking only makes it look even more cool than it already does.

There's only one person who I've known truly give up cigarettes. Kudos to Revan! :x

Heh, it's just better to not start at all. As being younger and stupid, I did used to smoke, because I felt the peer pressure with my friends at the time, plus it was a very very stressful time. Eventually I felt my body get more useless, I had trouble walking up stairs and doing anything physical ... I felt sick most of the time, and needed the nicotine "fix". That was my wake up call, I thought I couldn't go on like this and it can only get worse as I get older. So being only a smoker for 3 months, it was a good time to stop.

I did it cold turkey, very stupid too. I was so sick from nicotine withdrawals, big pain in my stomach for days, within two weeks the withdrawals got less and less. I don't plan on going back to smoking cigarettes either, was smart to stop early on the game.

Around here they recently banned smoking in public places, like restaurants. Which is a good thing, you can finally go eat out without breathing smoke in, as people know second-hand smoking is worse. Anyway, just don't even start, no matter how "cool" it looks, haha, trust me. People who smoke for like 30 years look disgusting, if they're still alive that is.

Nah its only pollution in both sides. Environmentally and Physically.

Simply put,I don't know why people smoke and quite frankly,I don't wanna know.
In my opinion I just don't see what's so cool about smoking.
I mean, all you do is pick up some rolled up ashes, light it up,breathe in and breathe out smoke.
woohoo...............bah.
Anyway I wanna live past 50 if you don't mind.

NO! it's not! can you say SOMETHING good with it? =_=

It's not a necessity, it's an addiction.

And smoking doesn't make someone bad; not everyone makes good choices and very few people that smoke are actually proud of the fact they're dropping over thirty bucks a week on it. A lot of smokers tell non-smokers that they should never start.

it is not a necessity, it can be control

Sure, I wonder about it all the time. I'm not a smoker but a hell of a lot of people around me are (which just makes me want to smoke less - I can't stand the smell. And the one time I kissed someone who did smoke, it was like french-kissing an ashtray). Anyhow, I guess there's plenty of reasons for those who do take up smoking. It's addictive for one thing, obviously. It acts as a relaxant for a lot of people; a de-stress action. Some girls I know took up smoking so that they'd loose weight, figuring that smoking would make them less hungry (much like some drugs that can be taken for the same reason). Still, I wouldn't ever ban smoking. Too many smoke to be able to for one thing, and even if someone were to ban it anyway, people would still do it illigally. Besides, I don't really like control freaks. I can see why dangerous drugs are made illigal, but people don't usually kill over cigarettes - nor does it screw with your brain like other drugs do.

Well, as far as I can see.. Only a few number of people could control their smoking habit, and the others can't..

People who smokes a lot and became addictive of it is difficult to be cured, they think it is better for them to smoke than to eat something more healthy..

Yeah, a lot of teachers in my school does smoke, eventhough there is a rule in my school that forbids students from smoking..

I think smoking isn't human necesity, in this world many people smoking and
I don't know what good they have from smoking.

I try smoke once and I think that's not special and of course smoke is very
bad for your health. So smoke is not human necesity, because i'm not smoking and I' fine until now.

Not a necessity, merely an addiction; and obsession, depends on the way you define such terms.

I support everything you say on this one. I can't believe there would be inconsiderate dodos smoking in a enclosed room that is air-conditioned. Whats more that its a no smoking zone! Well, for the dumb and people-with-nothing better-to-use-5-bucks-on, it is very necessary for them

Nah,its not a necessity, more like an addiction. For all I know cigar is the same as poison and drugs.

Well, when I was younger I really loved the smell of cigarettes... (ok, I still do...)
But since it's bad for you and all that, I stay away from it.

I'm not close to anyone that smokes, so I can't really tell of the reasons why most people smoke.
But people continue to smoke because it's addicting.

Most people start smoking for psychological need, and most will continue for a combination of psychological and physical. There are occasionally other reasons. My brother, for example, claims he started because he's going into acting, and actors are pretty much required to smoke. He just has to make absolutely certain he doesn't do it anywhere near our parents (or me for that matter). I'm somewhat curious to see how his usage will change over time, but it was his decision, and he'll live with the consequences.
Regardless, I find smoking foolish, disgusting, and annoying. I can't stand the smell, and the nasty habit of just dumping finished cigarettes on the ground is even worse - thankfully only some smokers do that. In fact, most of the people I've known who did it were otherwise great people, but it's still a major hurdle to get over.

Pretty much everyone who posted is NOT a smoker. Well...I am. When i was little, my dad and pretty much all adults that i knew of smoked. I knew to never do it then, cuz i was little and little kids are never supposed to do that. When i got into middle school...i hated smokers. My dad didnt live with us anymore so i wasn't surrounded by smoke anymore, but when i went to his house to visit him...the smell of smoke killed me. I'd come home, wash ALL my clothes and take a shower before i could sit down and actually be comfortable. It was that way for a while. Then high school came...i met a girl and became friends with her. I found out sophomore year that she smoked. I was shocked and disgusted. I couldn't look at her the same way. So then shortly later i met up with an old friend after a four year seperation. She was at my house visiting and needed a cigarette really bad. Her mom didn't know that she smoked, so i snuck and got her a cigarette. She asked if i wanted to share so i did. I was about 15...but we had so much fun smoking that cigarette, so anytime i was offered....i never refused. That got me going and now i'm up to a pack or more a day. I think i would like to quit...but the point is i don't want to. Sure, i probably smell like an ashtray...but i don't mind. I have no problem with smoking being banned in restaurants or inside public buildings...but when you ban smoking outside? What is that? The air belongs to everyone...if someone is smoking near you and you don't like the smell....move. You can get all the fresh air you want, your not forced to stand by a smoker. The point is, when you need a cigarette, you need it. It's a feeling like hunger almost. Hunger that can't be satisfied with all of the food in the world. You wouldn't deny someone of food would you? Why deny them a cigarette? You might say it's a weakness and it can be healed with nicotine gum or the patch. I say if the person doesn't have a problem with damaging their own body then you shouldn't either. Everyone has a choice. Some choose to smoke, others don't. We're not forcing you to smoke, so you shouldn't try to force us not to smoke. As far as necessity goes, it's not a necessity for ALL humans...but it is a necessity for some. So stop looking at other people's weaknesses and judging them and focus on your own. There are a lot more harmful things in the world that smoking cigarettes.

becuz of nicotine, it causes ur brain to think that u need more cigarettes, and u get addicted 2 them. my dad used 2 smoke, and he said he got angry a lot and was really hard. but my dad succeeded! i don't rly remember much the time he smoked cuz i was lyk 5 or 6 at the time. the smell of smoke is, sickening 2 me. becuz of second-hand smoking, i always, stop breathing for a momment whenever i smell smoke. my cousin once stayed at my house for awhile, and he smoked, so sometimes i'd smell cigarette smoke in my room, and i would hold my breath. he went back 2 korea, and evantually there wasn't smell of smoke in the house anymore. i hope i don't smoke, cuz i actually want 2 live my life 2 the fullest.

There are people who smoke and know to limit themselves so that the body can keep up with it; I.E. it can repair the damages smoking do. In that regard, it's not really different than drinking or eating excessive amounts of unhealthy food products.

The thing about smoking is that it CAN have adverse effects on the people surrounding smokers if they don't pay attention or don't care about the people close by. (Like smoking in cars when they have passengers, or heavy smoking indoor.) This is probably the reason society goes harder out on smoking compared to almost anything else.

Some of my friends are light smokers, and if I'm nearby, they take great care not to subject me to their secondhand smoke. (Even if I'm the guest in their homes.) That's why I'm not really giving any of them a hard time about it. I did have a relative who was a heavy smoker, though. He went through a lot of problems in his life, so I'm guessing smoking, to him, was a form of escape, which eventually claimed his life through lung cancer. It can be addictive, that's for sure, and certainly dangerous -- even lethal -- if you lose control of your habit.
