There's a lot of anime that people say is really good, but is it really that
great? I think a lot of it has to do with what's on tv. A lot of people only
watch what's on tv, so everything they see is a great anime.
I'm not saying that it's all horrible (I love Cowboy Bebop) but is it really
that great?
One example is Inuyasha. I've heard tons of people say that it's the best anime
ever. I'm not saying it's awful, but I definately don't think it's the best.
Another is Naruto. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a huge Naruto fan, but is
it really one of the best? Half of the first 220 episodes were fillers.
One that I'm not a big fan of (sorry for you fans out there) is Fruits Basket. I
loved the manga, but I really don't like the anime at all. It may just be
because I read a lot of the manga before I watched the anime.
So, is there any "great anime" that you don't think is so great?

I totally agree, and even during those episodes they continue to drag on with
the same schene for an eternity, what in the manga took up one page took 15
minutes to finish in the anime. (I like naruto overall, I just think they fill
it out too much)
I believe the ones people can usually watch on TV is quite simple and not all
too thoughtful, there's friendship, love, and all those elements, but all those
things are declared since the first and distinguished very easily. I just
recently watched Hagurashi no Naku Koro ni, and I enjoy it due to the fact that
unexpected things happen and that it was out of the ordinary (for me at least),
but the storyline wasn't that clear, making it hard to predict the outcome (you
always notice the style of the anime you're watching so you can always figure it
out, but it was a lot harder this time).
If there's one anime which I don't enjoy, I would say Love Hina, it's a really
cute concept and I had a good deal of laughs while watching it, but while
watching it I started to reflect over it and I realised how monotome it is, I
still finished it but if I could go back in tme to tell myself not to do that I
would, or at least tell myself only to watch half of the episodes.
Its all in the opinion. Everyone is different, therefore everyone likes
different things. It can be great for one person and not great at all for
another. There are no anime that everyone likes and vicevera. Even the most
popular and has the most fans anime, some people will still hate it. Thats what
makes humans unique, everyone is different. Even identical twins will think
differently and like different things.
I have seen at least a few episodes, if not all, of each of the anime mentioned
so far. i totally agree that they are pretty average. Some of what I believe are
the better ones are underrated and deserve more publicity (underrated animes
such as vandread and scrapped princess). I understand that some people don't
like certain types of anime but i can assure you that my judgement is
independent of the anime's genre. for example, wolf's rain is quite good
(plot-wise, character development, soundtrack, etc) but some people might not
like it because it can be quite depressing.

That's true. But what we're discussing here is whether this anime's truly
deserve this much attention. I agree with most parts, people have different
tastes. As for me I'm usually opposite what is commonly popular! I've never been
interested in Bleach, Naruto, Ranma 1/2 (although this one's really funny),
Inuyasha, ... Don't kill me for that, but that's just what I think. I really get
bored and lose interest once an anime drags too long. Bleach for instance
despite of it's character's developments and their powers is yet a series of
endless combats and rivalry in my opinion. Once you think every thing's
finalized they bring up another thing to make you sit and watch another season.
I don't know! But after awhile I just tell myself 'Let them fight! I go find
another anime with good and reasonable conclusion!'
Have you ever thought what these anime's ending would be like?
I totally agree..... Personally I don't really understand why animes like
Naruto, Bleach and Full Metal Alchemist, Inu Yasha is so popular
I know everybody has their preference but I do not see anything special in these
series
Personally, I'm one of those Anti-Naruto fan and I understand there are people
who like them.... but I don't see what makes it so popular when I don't even
find it worth wasting my time on (sorry for the rudeness but just being honest)

I agree with you.
Whatever an anime is great or not is solely an opinion. Just that perhaps there
are a lot more people who like certain genres or such, so anime that falls into
that particular catagory become popular pretty easily. On-going animes also
influence their popularity, since there's more to expect from. (Not saying that
short/already finished animes are bad.)
Personally, I'm not too interesting in spending my energy on being
"Anti-" of an anime, neither character. I also don't really approve of
anime being "over-rated" or "under-rated". To me, it's not
really respecting other people's likes/love for an anime. It really hurts when
people start "degrading" one of your fandoms. It's okay if it was only
a thought though, but it really has to be stated clearly it's only a thought,
and sounds like only trying to express their own opinion (best if backed up with
a proper elaboration), or else is could be easily interpreted as an insult
regardless of what was said.
I agree that there can be a great gap between what is great and what is
popular.
Ultimately it always comes down to personal preferences for those of independant
minds. Unfortunately you have far to many sheep out there willing to follow the
herd.
It's up to each one which anime is the best or the worst. Popularity influences
a lot in these (it doesn't mather if we like it or not). In my country you have
to get most of the anime stuff by your own so it's quite difficult to rate them.
Recently, some popular series (Naruto is one of them) are appearing in TV, and
some friends think that this was the worst thing they could have done with them.
Personally, I don't see it as bad as they. The people that only see animes
because they are popular (to me) they're not valuable fans. Choosing what to
see, just because you keep seeing it at TV or listening of it it's not something
I do. What will happen when the anime you we're watching dissapear from TV? Will
you stop seeing it?
To valuable fans, it's not difficult to get the anime they want (some effort
maybe..), but to those who only watch anime because it's "popular" at
that moment, what will they do? I don't know....
From what I'm getting from this thread, generally "great" =
"popular" and TV = US, not Japan (Plumm's profile says US Michigan so
I'm confident on this one). Assuming this to be true, one of my biggest problems
with such anime (naruto, bleach, inu yasha to name a few) is that they become
almost ridiculously long. Plumm stated that many of the first 200 episodes of
Naruto were filler and Bleach added an entire story arc that was not included in
the manga. I'm not touching Inu Yasha because Rumiko Takahashi is known for
making humongous series (Urusei Yatsura capped at 200 some, making Maison Ikkoku
look puny with a "mere" 96). The problem with this would be that it's
really hard to keep a series going that long with a steady flow of fresh
material. Unfortunately, (imo) many such series fail at this
Chepelos, I share your feelings that people shouldn't just hop on the bandwagon,
but you have to take into consideration that by the time an anime series is
televised in the US, just about every "valuable" fan would have had a
copy of it for at least a year. Maybe more. I don't watch any US channel that
broadcasts anime, but I'm seeing Death Note ep 6 and Bleach ep 49-52 on the
adult swim website. Death Note began airing in Japan Oct '06, and Bleach raws
are out to like 150ish right now (with the fansubs following days after). Not to
mention that it's aired with the english dub, which have been notorious for
being horrible. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if people are excited to
watch the newest episode of (dubbed) Bleach on their television, they shouldn't
be considered much of a "fan" anyways. I digress...
To me, it doesn't really matter what becomes popular in the US, but actual anime
fans will not limit their favorites to just anime that has all the
hype.
To make this seem kind of relevant to the original post, some of the popular
series that I have liked are: FMA, Death Note (until about halfway with that
huge plot change...you know...I don't know how to use spoilers so yea......),
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
I've been known to say that some anime series are overrated, mostly because
they're super popular among Americans and, upon watching a few episodes, I just
don't see why. That's how I feel about Inuyasha and Naruto. They're okay, but
they aren't amazing. I think, for the most part, they get popular because they
get aired on American tv and they get a lot of attention. I can't walk into a
Borders without seeing something for Naruto or Inuyasha or Bleach.
That isn't to say that every anime that gets attention is mediocre, I happen to
be a huge Death Note fan, but I do think that a lot of what is called 'great'
and has a ton of fans is really just hyped up a lot. If a lot of people see it,
it's going to get a lot of fans. That doesn't necessarily mean it's particularly
high quality anime.
In many cases, manga readers that watch the animated version of their favorites
tend to prefer the
original format as changes are prone to be made during the transition. Their are
a few rare cases
when the tables are turned, however, as with Evangelion. In the end, it's all up
to the individual
to determine what's "cool~" =3
Now, bow before my open-mindedness and maturity! Aha~
*bows*
Ah, so true about how reading manga first makes you hate/dislike the anime if
it's different. I think you're less likely to mind the anime if you watch it
first (this was the case with DN Angel for me), but watching an anime first
sometimes gives you a wrong impression of the manga will be like... eg Fruits
Basket
I think a lot of that has to do with the directors cutting out material when
making the anime (based on manga). Like how books often are more detailed than
movies, people may become disappointed when they don't see the manga reenacted
accurately in the anime. Another problem would be that anime faces stricter
censorship rules (see "Hayate no Gotoku!")
i agree with you. one that comes to my mind instantly is ah! My Goddess. it was,
fun sometimes, at best. i feel the same way about bleach and gundam wing.
I agree. Of course the American TV anime, though good, are way over-rated. It
just happens that way when something gets too popular. People blow it out of
proportion.
Then again, there are some anime that are really famous, even among the
"hardcore anime fans," that I just don't get at all. Trigun, Fushigi
Yuugi, and Chobits especially. I fail to find any merit in those series, but
most people who watch them seem to come away with the impression that they are
brilliant anime classics. And yet I cannot see what makes these anime better, or
even as good as, Inuyasha and other poplar TV anime.
There's a lot of anime that people say is really good, but is it really that great? I think a lot of it has to do with what's on tv. A lot of people only watch what's on tv, so everything they see is a great anime.

Inuyasha, Bleach, most shounen anime in fact I think are bad. I guess it's because a lot of people think that's the very best anime can do.
I totally agree, and even during those episodes they continue to drag on with the same schene for an eternity, what in the manga took up one page took 15 minutes to finish in the anime. (I like naruto overall, I just think they fill it out too much)

ya well... all i can say is that they haven't watch the really good anime
I liked anime which aren't predictable...
There are really good ones. But I still cannot say "Wow this is the best anime ever".
Naruto is a bit overrated i guess. i am not a huge fan of one piece either. i duno about others, coz i only watch wat interests me.

what i can say is that it depends on personal opinion
like me for example. ppl have been chasing after naruto but i have no idea what is good on that anime i think its too childish for my taste
i personally prefer anime that have a much deeper meaning than good versus evil type
