We're talking about those little annoyances in video games that for some reason
remain today, even though we all hate them. Those things that can take an
otherwise amazing game and either outright ruin it, or just lessen the
experience. Here's what I've got:
Save points: PC's have had quick save for countless years but why do so many
console games still have save points? I understood when we were talking memory
cards, but everything has a harddrive now. Sometimes I don't want to play hours
to get to the next save point, and sometimes that storm outside ain't gonna wait
for it either.
Rediculously rare RPG crap: Items, quests, bosses etc that are so rare or just
plain obscure that anything outside of lottery winning luck or a strategy guide
glued to your forehead will have you coming up empty handed. Nothing like
getting to that last optional boss to flaunt your power only to find out you
needed a certain item from forever ago that was one time only and way out of
your way.
Escort missions: Maybe not get rid of escorts, they can be fun if the AI doesn't
suck. RE4 had decent AI and Half-Life 2 had amazing AI in the way Alyx acted.
But then you have the game that has terrrible AI and to top it off will throw a
game over at you for failing to keep the idiots alive.
Gimmicky/cheap bosses: I hate when I get to some boss and it beats the crap out
of me. Not because I'm weak or unprepared, but it's the type of boss that
requires some stupid gimick to beat. You have to have a certain item or use a
particular spell at just the right time. I don't mind being outclassed, but I
hate being killed because of something unforseeably cheap.
I wish they would stop using whiny teenage boys as the main protagonists in
RPG's. Whenever I play a game with a character like that, I feel like letting
him get killed instead of powering him up.
Final Fantasy should be retired. They're just milking the franchise for
everything it has. Like it'd just sound retarded when they roll-out the
Playstation 5 and Xbox - 1080 and we've got Final Fantasy XXXVIII comin' out.
I hate leveling my characters up to near godlike power, only to beat the boss
and end the game, throwing all that effort down the crapper. I need games that
last longer than two or three days, otherwise there's no point in buying
them.
The game industry could definitely do without the copycats, as well. Just
because one game did extremely well, every other company thinks they have to
create a game exactly like it
*cough*Army of Two*cough*.
And the final things that should be retired are the uptight mothers that piss
and moan about how violent video games are ruining they're "perfect"
children--there's NO WAY that it could be the parents' fault that the kid
kills people, the video game made him do it.
More co-op gaming, please. Seriously, everything is so damn
deathmatch/playerkiller/clan war/duel angled nowadays, it's as if we've
forgotten how to cooperate with each other. It's getting better, but it's still
a far cry from the 8-bit era and some of the magnificent multiplayer games you
had back then.
The ridiculous focus on streetracing and pimping rides nowadays. I miss the
older games where you raced a larger variety of supercars on greatly varied and
drop-dead gorgeous scenery.
Powerlevelling and boosting in MMORPGs. (Which limits it to Diablo 2 for me,
though I'm sure it's a bit of a problem in other RPGs as well.) You're ruining
it for the others who just want to enjoy the game, you dipshits.

Try Mount&Blade.
As for cliche things in games? How about an RPG based on the bad guys for once?
I'm sick of playing a hero all the time.

There is this old PC game called.... Dungeon Master or somesuch, where you
basically play as the master of a dungeon, and you get to set up traps and stuff
to catch/kill any would-be heroes who try to enter.
There's also the Fable games, where you're supposedly given the opportunity to
choose.
Oh, and let's not forget City of Villains, where you basically create a villain
character and play said character out in an MMORPG world of sorts.
Well you can be a jerk in Fable, but not really bad. Sometimes doing what the
bad guy would do, will get you a game over. You might have a mission to escort
some merchants and if you do the evil thing of killing them and stealing all of
their stuff, you end up with a game over. So you have to escort them and get
good points. Not like being evil really gets you anything outside of the ability
to burp and fart... which is totally evil.

Well, that's lame. Thanks for clearing that up, I guess.
Oh, forgot to mention Champions: Return to
Arms for the PS2, where you can choose to side with evil at the beginning
of the game. It leads to some stage changes and some dialogue changes, plus you
fight a different boss at the very end of the game.
I guess for games like Splinter Cell, kinda similar to shoujoboy's, where if you
accidentally kill an innocent, you lose.
Also, although it's kinda hard to fix, I hate games where you can't do anything
and everything in environment. For example, you can't jump in Fable!
Last thing, I hate rpg's where you have to try forever to get that awesome item,
and it turns out that it only affects one specific enemy.
Alfredigital, I totally agree with your opinion on getting consoles.
I used to play a lot of GTA 3 and Vice City on my PS2. When they came out with
San Andreas, I was pissed since it was so different, and I didn't know when it
was ok to get out of my car. Then they made that version for the PSP...now it's
the Xbox?! What the hell? I'm not made of cash!
Anyway...
One thing that should be payed more attention to in video games is that each
character gets their own voice actor, and that they have had a lot of time
rehearsing any accents, or kinds of speach. My current favorite game is
"Age of Empires 3" (I have all 3). I realized recently that some of
the voices are very similar. One of the accents were kind of stupid. Call me
picky, but I think game designers don't really focus on all aspects of a game.
They take more time with scenery, plot, and whatever female characters they
have. They neglect other parts of the game that make it better - like their
voices!

What? Is anyone holding guns against your head and forcing you to buy everything
new?
If everyone embraced that line of thought, we'd all still be playing Atari 2600
games on black and white TVs.

Voice acting is a bonus. While it's sad to hear bad voice acting, I would rather
have them focus on the gameplay first and foremost. Visual and aural pleasures
come second.

The Wii-mote. Unless it looks like a sword, I prefer regular controllers.
