right now, i cannot see my background because white is covering it. is there a
way to get rid of it or make it transparent. also how do i re-size a
image
Resizing should be easy; right click your image, then from the popup menu select
"Image->Scale Image". Then just choose the new size you want and
click OK.
As far as seeing only white; if you haven't drawn anything yet then of course
you see only white; that's all there is to see! If you have already drawn
something, and for some reason the white is covering what you've drawn, you
probably have to configure your layers properly. First, we need the Layers dock
(if it isn't already there). Again right click on the image, and this time from
the menu select "Dialogs->Create New Dock->Layers, Channels, and
Paths". This creates a new dock (really just a new window) that lets you
work with your layers. Each layer is like its own picture; they can all have
transparent parts, and are stacked like sheets of paper or cards in a deck. In
that new window, you can drag the different layers around. My guess is that you
have a top layer of all white, and other layers under that from your picture.
Move the white layer down or delete it.
If I don't seem to be making sense to you, just let me know. Better yet,
describe the problem in more detail.

I see you found where to get Gimp 2.0.
If you go into more detail about your problem I'll also try and help if I can.
