As the title says, when you build or buy a new computer system, which one do you prefer..

In the past, I like to have more performance and don't care about the system noise. However, resently, I need to edit a lot of audio recording. Then, I realized that the CPU heat sink fan and one of my hard drive make too much noise for this work. So, I have to take that hard drive off the system and replace the CUP heat sink fan with a low noise one to reduce the noise to a acceptable level.

This let me re-think my approch to build a new PC. Yes, you can build a water cool system to enjoy both low noise and performance but you need $$$ to do that. I am not asking for opinion for building a system. I just curious on how other people make choice espcially the performance on todays CPU performance already exceeds average user needs.

Sam

Water cooling systems isn't that expensive anymore, but if i should choose between quite and performance, i would pick performance ...

Since building and isntalling of a water cooling system for my case is quite a bit expensive.

i prefer to use vent's in my case. the case gets very warm while i play or work on the pc, cause of the 5 HDD's and the DVD Burner when i burn stuff.

I always build my pc's for performance. i dont care about a bit noise, cause all the vent's i have in it are heat controlled.

The real choice is between performance, noise and cost. Pick any two...

I'd pick performance. XD Don't have to do any audio stuff, more graphics, so it's okay.

def performance XD

It is simple enough to have a mix of both. The noisiest components in your computer are your CPU fan, GFX fan, PSU and HDDs.

- A Zalman Reserator can be used if you want realy silence. This can cool CPU and GFX card without the use of any fans using water and a huge heatsink.
- There are plenty of quiet HDDs and even measures you can take to make them near silent.
- New Tagan PSUs are almost completly silent. There are passive ones, but they've been proven to be dangerously unstable in some cases.

That's just my two pence ^^ .

well, I'm not doing audio recording... so definitely performance..
I don't mind the sound of fans too much XD besides, I'm usually playing music, so I don't hear it often.. performance is what I'm really looking for.

performance, over clocking, performance, performance.... did i mention performance?! when you have 6 thermaltake fireballs in your computer like i do.. it sounds like an airplane. but im usually wearing headphones, or have winamp bumpin the hardcore techno through the sony system i have hooked up so i cant hear them.

A year ago as I build my current PC I opted for performance and didn't care about noise.
But over the month I switched the loudest parts for silent ones and now the PC is almost inaudible. In only one year I changed my priorities completly :)
If I have to build a new Computer from scratch I would opt for low noise. With the right components you can reach high performance even with silent systems. (especialy with the new winchesters from AMD wich will be the perfect choice for low noise desktops)

I go for a computer that's got performance with moderate noise, it can be done, but you can't really OC or anything that'll push the system to it's limits.

I'd definitely go with performance.

With a bit of careful design (and some scavanging) you could get a water cooled system for not too much.
You could use a radiator off a scrapped motorbike and use convection to move the liquid thus saving the cost of the rediculously priced PC specific radiators and pumps. Of course, if you mess it up you could melt important bits of your machine (not to mention your anatomy if you're not careful)...

Kirtai,I totally argee with you that one can build a working water cool system for les.
I have read someone in a overclocking forum doing exectly what you described.
The idea of using an old radiator is also very popular amount audio amplifier builders - most of them build multi-kilo Watt amplifier.

Noise ain't so bad, and I'm a power hungry user. I love the sheer power of a fast computer even if I don't use its full capabilities. :D

Im going with performance always have although I run a microsoft OS :p but got lots of ways of tweaking it so it wont be that bad.

Definitely performance. As long as it doesn't sound like a jet engine then the noise is fine.

for me its perfomance
I'm not doing any audio stuff
plus, when I'm on my comp I always turn on my mp3 as loud as I can. ^_^

Performance is all that matters, that's why I also make several tweaks on the operating system, to squeeze every bit of juice I can get from the hardware.

Noise can be minimized by setting-up a water-cooled system, OR a couple of strategically placed fans on the casing.

Given the same price, I would go for performance.

Definitely Performace. However, noise reduction is a "performance" upgrade in itself. Cost might not matter much in either arena. I can think of numerous this to upgrade performance that would cost as much a water cooling system. I've never known a reason to want a quiter computer for the reason of just having one, but sound recording is a good reason.

quiet. but i'll sup it up as much as posible(45dB max).

Performance is obviously the choice I would pick here. But you can still get a real cheap PC with high performance and very low noise frequency. Mine is so quietly, you could almost whisper and hear yourself mumbling while the comp. is on! hehe.

22 db Level, that's very low compared to minimum standards.
