Graduated Magna Cum Laude!

Hopefully this hasn't already been posted. Anyways. if you're using Mozilla Firefox, here's a little tweak that will help speed up the time it takes to load web pages for broadband users:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

wow.......this actually worked great.......lol thanks Skillz, btw where did u find this tweak? on the web or you messed around with the config urself?

This tweak is all over the web (with the exact same wording). Some caveats:

1. Pipelining (network.http.pipelining and network.http.proxy.pipelining) does make things faster, but won't work with some broken web servers (and that's why it's not on by default). I've never found any of them myself, but if you do find one (the symptom seems to be broken images), it's a simple matter of turning pipelining off and reloading the page.

2. Changing the initial paint delay (nglayout.initialpaint.delay) to zero uses a bit more CPU, so you wouldn't want to do it on slower machines.

And last but not least, another trick: if you set browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs to true, you enable a few hidden preferences in the Advanced configuration (which were hidden just before 1.0 was released because they were slightly buggy). With these preferences, you can make every popup window you didn't already block open in a new tab instead of a new window, or even in the same tab. Caveat: if the page tries to close the "window", bad things might happen (I think it tries to close the whole window instead of just the tab).

Firefox, is there anything that it can't do?
This caused a visible speed up for me on several slow loading sites.

rocking. thanks a lot.

I advise against this, you may get a little faster speed, but if you're on DSL or faster then there is no point. And futhermore, some sites blocekd me from entering. Photobucket is an example. So I would change everything back

Another thing to keep in mind, (which I was reading on other sites) by using multiple connections it's possible that you're preventing other people from connecting to that server at the same time. The example I saw was if a server accepts max 100 simultaneous connections and you're using 30 of them... well that's just greedy.

Nice! I had known about the pipelining settings, but browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePref was new to me and very handy. I hate when links open new windows, but don't mind so much now that they open in a tab instead. Props!

it's weird on my end. i have 22 tabs on mozilla. after resetting some sites open, and other don't. everytime i open other sites are affected.
i have to reclick on yahoo [for instance] several times before i get in.

weird. im wondering if it's from the settings or perhaps some virus. ran all viral software though- nothing came up.
