Computer designing or programming?

..: winter air :..

I've been wondering about this problem for some time now, and I thought it would be nice to hear other people's opinions on it.

Which do you think is better or more important? Computer designing or programming? Looking at both sides of the problem: without designing, programs would look like the way it did on MS DOS. And without programming, all there would be is a bunch of pretty artworks that doesn't really do anything. In my opinion, both is equally important. But it seems that computer programmers are a bit more sought after than designers.

What are your opinions on this subject?

Thats a good question, but me being a programmer Im going to go with computer programming.

I'm only saying design because I think art is one of the most important things in this world...

Maybe it's because programming is more difficult so it's probably harder to find someone who specialise in it. Anyone can design but not everyone can program.
I agree that both are equally important... maybe I should learn how to program one day....

Programming I more important. No offence to anyone here, but with out programming you couldn't even do designing, plus the great bulk of computers out there are not being used for personal use. But don't get me wrong, I think computer designing as you call it (computer artwork) is cool, why else would I be here?

hmm...im both a designer and a programmer.....and i think programming is way more important and better, and harder :P

I do quite alot of both and I'd have to say programming is more important.

If there is no graphics designs on websites, it still works and you can still read the content (such is the days of gopher and earily WWW) but if you just have some cool web site designs, then its not really going to be helpful to anyone.

I also programming requires more concenration and work than designing does, but designing requires you to think outside the square more if you want to come up with something new and different.

I have my degree in Computer Science, so I'm a little jaded. :P I think that CS is a very important part, if not equally as much as design. Both sides have their part, and both make a difference.

I'm getting too old for this...

They both have their place. For Designers they're better at making things look good (and layout) and that becomes important if it's critical to the user's perspective. For a programmer (and I'm a programmer of many years) they're better at making things work more efficiently and hopefully without crashing a program. They're important because they hopefully write programs that make people's lives better or at least simpler than they way they used to do it. I often wish I was better at design because some of my attempts at screen layouts and colour use have been less than atrocious. ^_^'

thats like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg? personally, i prefer to program rather than design (low level implementation tends to put me to sleep) but i do understand the importance of design. ultimately design is more important for the programmer since it provides their livelyhood but if you consider a plain user, they'll be more interested if the system has a nice GUI

Hmmmnn... thats a hard one. Right now im majoring in computer science. After that I was planning to take programming. Then maybe desiging if i wanted too XD. Program is much harder than programming. ahh!! RPG 2, cobol, Visual, C+ programming. These are the classes i have to take as a comp major. O_o

im a programmer so il go with programming. and besides you can do desgining with programming. i love to program, and programming is tough. there will be no software's for design if it is not programmed first.

Programming is definitely more critical, not only are there many things that wouldn't function without it, but many things do not need fancy interfaces. Consider servers and all the embedded microcontrollers out there. Also consider bash and the linux CLI environment. It's very simple, but extremely powerful and easy to get stuff done.

Also, I would say that software engineering is more important than designing (you mean artistic design I assume). As they say, 'form follows function'. It's more important to have an interface that fits the user's needs and works well than to have a fancy looking one. Although it doesn't hurt to have both.

I am a programmer on the whole, and I do C++, Pascal, PHP and CGI. Not sure how computer designing works though...

I prefer programmming... :) :)

I really go for programs that look good but can still do the job well. So design seems the most important to me.
