Well, lacking the money or sources for scanning, I decided to try and do screencaps. One slight problem though..

I have absolutely no idea how to get them properly. Any suggestions? programs, tips, etc?

screencapes...you can do that with the 'prtscrm' button on your keyboard

press it and go to a graphics program (like photoshop) and 'edit->paste'

hmmm, depends on what you want. Making screencaps from
moving video for instance would be good if it were from DVD, yet the
prtscn button wont work directly. Get a prog that has a screencapture
thing built into it, I believe powerDVD has one.

Yet if you want to go full on sexy screencaps, buy a hardware capture card
by for instance Pinnacle systems. They have a HQ capture card for a cheap price
(its older) but your captures can be anywhere from 320 x 240 to 1600 x 1200. :)
o yeah, and you can hardware encode mpegs with it too hehehe.

print screen is the easiset way but it doesnt work on xp. there are some players that can take screens but personally i just use virtualdub since it can easily take a sequence of frames which is great for making animations

Ok..btw, Ive tried the print screen route, the image never comes out right, always has a black border even when taken full screen. And since I aint got the cash for a scanner, a capture card is out..for right now, anyway.

WHat is virtualdub out of curiosity?

go get a program called virtualdub; you can skip to the frame you want and press ctl +2 to capture the frame. then you can go into photoshop and make a new picture and press ctl v

taking screencaps with WMP often doesent work due to privacy reasons.
If you are trying to take screencaps from normal video files use virtual dub.
And as for DVDs, a program i use (A Player) is called Power DVD, it has a built in screencap option

hope this helps, pm me

one question,

im using cyberlink power dvd to play dvds on my pc. but i dont see any screen cap option. is it for other versions of power dvd?

Its a certain button combination, I think. Try looking in the help files for screencaps. It IS in there, though you cant use screencaps `round here.

when using windows media player press ctl-I to take a screencap, a window will appear to ask where to save it

Yeah, virtualdub won't but virtualdub mod can.

However, I don't recommend you to use it beacause you have to rip the vob files to harddisk first. Then you have to resize and do deinterlacing. That's a lot of work.

The faster method is use the capture function of your dvd playback software such as windvd or powerdvd.
