I haven't watched too many animes but I feel like anime these days are much different from the 'old' ones. I am not that much of an expert so I leave you to answer. Isn't there a change in quality? I mean are the standards for anime increasing or decreasing. I for one seem to prefer those which are not that recent. Thanks for the answers of the experts! ;)

Well from my observation, the new animes have better graphics and animation but I prefer the story/plot of the old animes

Yup. The new ones borrow the storylines of old ones :). Watching new ones I have some sort of deja vu :).
I prefer old ones. Better characters imo (just look at Lain, NGE, etc).

OH there are huge differences between older and newer animes but it does not make the older better or the newer better. They are just reflections of what materials and technology was available at the time. You've got animes like Ghost in the Shell which has kept up with the digital age but was originally hand drawn and I think all the Ghost in the Shell stuff is excellent
Do not interfere in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

I like the animation of the newer animes better then the older series. However I feel newer animes are more commercialised and lack the originality and character development that older series seemed to have.

It doesn't matter if its old or new, a good anime is a good anime. But, you will probably find it easier if you look through new animes if you want to find a good one faster, since the drawing style and scripting for older animes I dislike most of them.

I've been watching anime for over 10 years now, and have been watching it since Akira was first released in the UK. Animation is cleaner these days, and in some cases more fluid, especially with the advent of CG and computers. But even today, I love to watch older anime more, I still sit down and watch Dominon Tank Police, Cyber City OEDO 808, Akira, Macross Plus, 3x3 Eyes and I can't help feel that newer series just lack that feeling of satisfaction that I get when watching the older ones. I do watch new series, and I like them, but I feel there's more to be had in the older ones, sometimes I feel like I'm watching a Saturday morning kids show, rather than the peak of Japanese animated entertainment.
Though in general I feel these days that people lean towards a more dumbed down approach to many things, things have to be explained too much and simplified beyond belief in order to cater to everyone.
I worry sometimes that I've become elitist in some way, which is something I'm not comfortable with, but overall it seems to me as anime has increased in popularity and penetrated the mainstream, it's diluted itself into something with as much appeal, but less staying power.
Then again, maybe I'm getting too old :\ ...

I don't necessarily think anime is getting better these days. Or worse, for that matter. Do keep in mind that I don't consider shows from the 90's as old shows. Galaxy Express, Robotech/Macross, Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato, Captain Harlock... now THAT is old shows.
Sure, there are lots of classics, the aforementioned among them, but there's also a lot of good, new shows; Haibane Renmei, Aria, Haruhi Suzumiya, Gankutsuou, Snow Queen (which is a new show, even if it feels a little old), the Ah! My Goddess TV series.... You're not in shortage of good shows if you just know where to look.

i would prefer new anime because of the art and graphics, but some old ones are really good, too. Classics such as Evangelion, Slam Dunk and Dragon Ball.

New ones! They are more exciting! ( not all but well ...) , But of course you can forget about the old ones, like Macross... , the classics that appleseed86 said and many more!

definitely the old ones. story is more important than graphics. did people fall in love of games like ff vii or chrono trigger because of the graphics? no. it was the story. although i'll admit, the graphics were badass back in the day. hahaha.

I'd say that newer anime tends to be better than older anime. Changes in the times have allowed for far more plot devices to be used in comparison to the past. But you have to know where you've been to know where you're going. Nothing worse than someone who thinks the show they are watching is the first of it's kind when it has something from the 70's to thank.
Under construction. Who doesn't like plain text anyway?

Depends if you're looking for arty inspiration or a great plot....all the old plots have been used up, so new anime/manga sort of steals stuff and makes it up as it goes along. I love them both!

It depends, I'd say :) Some old animes are very incredible even by today's measures. They have incredible presentation and well-developed plot. They are few that can even surpass today's animes in terms of art and drawing. Personally, when it comes to details, I prefer hand-drawn animes. Everything looks alive and in motion. I still, find Gundam Wing incredible in spite of its age whether for its plot or graphics.

I must agree with ealpha-scorpio. What I am now wondering about is how much of the todays anime are made more for money rather than for art or fans. I regret not having an good overall look on the anime history and status.- Feb 04, 2008
