my personal favorite is probably clannad
I'm still playing the visual novel but have seen some of the anime
each character (even minor ones such as misake and sunohara) has such a deep backstory
and I find it interesting how they explain the "routes"
tomoya is basically going around in the past collecting the "happiness" (lights) of the characters
I do recommend reading the visual novel, as it goes into much more depth in each of the alternate endings

I love Clannad because the characters are so well filled out. The story doesn't just focus on the romance, it focuses on the characters' every day lives.
