I Walk Alone...

I just had to share this with everyone here at MT. I know the kind of people we have here in our community and this is right in keeping with our Ideals. I have to say that this story pulled on my heart strings really hard. I hope all who read this post will enjoy the story.

Electron Boy to the Rescue
January 20, 2011 - 1:22 PM | by: Dan Springer

14-year old Erik Martin of Seattle has every reason to be angry. We would understand if he felt sorry for himself and thought less about other people than his life-threatening cancer. But Erik Martin is an inspiration to countless people around the world because despite the incredible odds he's facing, all he wants to do is help others in need.

Erik was born with only half of his heart working and with no spleen. He also had fetal alcohol syndrome which has left him developmentally disabled. And if that's not enough, he developed a tumor on his spine. The tumor was removed, but the rare form of cancer came back spreading to his bones, several organs and lymph nodes.

His doctors say his condition is untreatable and incurable. Erik is now under hospice care.

The Make A Wish Foundation heard about Erik and asked him if he could have one wish granted what would it be. Without hesitation Erik said he wanted to be a superhero. And that's when the world's latest superhero was born, Electron Boy.

Since 1980 the Make A Wish Foundation has granted 200,000 wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Most kids either want to go to a theme park like Disneyland or meet a famous person. In thirty years Erik became just the third superhero behind "Beettle Boy" in Pittsburgh and "Star" in Boise, Idaho.

Eager to make his dream come true, Make A Wish Foundation choreographed an elaborate event in which Spider Man called on Electron Boy to help him save the world from the evil "Dr. Dark" and his partner-in-crime "Blackout Boy".

In one spectacular day, Electron Boy rescued the Seattle Sounders soccer team at Qwest Field, rode in a Delorean behind a police escort and saved a group of people stuck in an elevator at the Space Needle. When his heroics were over, he was cheered by hundreds of utility workers who wanted to be a part of the wish. In fact, Make-A-Wish Foundation officials told us the community response was overwhelming.

Since Electron Boy was in action his legend has grown. His story has been told as far away as Australia, he was honored with a resolution on the floor of the U.S. Congress, he has his own theme song and what every superhero must have, his own comic book. When the Seattle Times ran it's original story on Electron Boy, it was the top story for nine consecutive days receiving more than a half-million hits.

Erik's mother who adopted him when he was six says she's not surprised that her son would ask for such a selfless wish. Judy Martin tells Fox News that it has always been in his nature to try to cheer up people who are sad.

Erik's condition is worsening. He is too weak to go to school spending most of his days sleeping. But his dad tells us he still occasionally gets energized when he talks about Electron Boy, a true hero in more ways than one.

ぬいぐるみ !

what a heart felt story, made me tear up. sadly that's how it is, the real heroes are in our lives but for an instant in time. people often don't know about it, care to know about or just don't care period. if more people could care about the world, about themselves, about others, just like this kid did, then the world could and would be a better place. he's on borrowed time now, but perhaps someone can see this, read this, know about it and pay it forward. if there were more heroes in the world there sure would be less villains.

Very heart-breaking indeed, I hope he will live longer and won't become a tragic hero.

I'm believing you and I can do anything. We can change the world.

Wow! This is an inspiring story... even though it's really sad. I wish the best for Erik and his family.

I'm always impressed by sick children. They are often more selfless than any of us, and they would have every right to be upset about their situation, and yet they are wiser and kinder than a lot of us... Thanks for sharing such a touching story with us, it is really thought-worthy!

Lazy People Gather All The World

very inspiring story... if Erik does still can make up his life, we as the normal person must work better and harder and less complaining... Ganbatte, Erik-kun....

I know everyone is lazy, but none would admit it. Needs big bravery to admit I am lazy, yet I would do it. Let's start a campaign of laziness, let's everyone just sleep enough everyday, without any moron jobs. Hell yeah, sleep is da best. It's lazy democracy, from lazy people, for lazy people, by lazy people, ya know!!!

I always believe that superheros exist.
heard so much about heart-breaking stories like this, and now i know about another Hero. Thanks to Erik for the inspiration.I'll try to complain less and think about other people.

It seems that the best among us stay with us for the least amount of time. Perhaps God has very little growth for them to accomplish before He takes them home. Or, maybe He shares them with us for a short time as an example for us to follow. Nevertheless, the boy's pain and tribulation is real. It is well that there are those of us who care enough for others, as does this child, to assist others like him in making their short time with us more bearable.

the pure form of life, last when great suffer occurs.

i read it from a manga. and i believe true hero only comes when great suffer's occured. They come for inspiring us.

God loves every human, so He gives them, who in suffer still can inspire others, small amounts of life. why? maybe so they are not must feel the suffer long time. if God gives the boy long time of life, the boy would feel more and more suffer. if the time is short, at least he must only endurance it for some years, not tenth years....

Maybe it's God wish, so he comes in suffer and inspires us. after his job's finished, God takes him to eternal heaven, or reincarnates him to better form of life full of happiness.

You are most welcome Naphartiri. The Hero quality is in each and everyone of us...we just choose not to use it or let it show.
