Is the internet really a "fantasy world"?

I'm all washed up. . .

I've had this discussion with my parents before, and they think that the internet is a fantasy world, a place in which people aren't really benefiting from the people they chat with or even the websites or communities they visit. Usually, the older people who met with others in the offline world think that online relationships are impossible, and they also think that there is a lot of fraud and impersonation going on. In our day and age, many people benefit from using the internet, from research reports to finding information about certain topics, finding news topics, and even chatting with other people online.

Some people even think that the internet is a means of escaping the troubles they face in the offline world and that it gives them more flexibility to express their feelings versus having to confront their problems face-to-face. However, despite all of the benefits that I know can be generated from the use of the internet, in my mother's opinion, the internet is a "fantasy world", and nothing can be gained and many things can be lost, such as the will to be more social in life and possibly even identity can be lost.

What do you think about the internet? Do you think we can benefit from being on the internet more nowadays than we used to? Should the internet really be considered a "fantasy world"?

ummmn, it is pretty hard to say, internet has become so incorporated into my life that I start to lose feelings for it, maybe thats just me
Back then, I remember when i first touched internet, i was so excited. I remember we have to go to those internet rooms to get internet, those days, o welll, it is really a nice feeling. Besides all my teachers are against it
however, in regard to SilentMasamune's posts, i once read a report of Texas women rallied a group of christians in order to shut down the internet because they are claiming that it is taking away kid's creativity

O.k. Let me set this all straight now. This'll be one to make notes on. You AND your parents raise and interesting point. I, myself, beleive that the internet is only what it is and nothing more. It may be the safest haven and at the same time, the most dangerous hell. It depends who you are. On the internet you don't wanna do something then don't. It's not like the person on the other end has some freakish power to point a gun at you through the screen and however many miles that seperate you. The internet is a struggle. Simply put. Even simpler. Here's what it all comes down to. I call it the 'Perfectionist Insanity' meaning that you benefit from something, or think something is perfect, according to your lifestyle. If you are an avid internet artist, like what we have here, you consider the internet an incredible source. Providing everything you need. From Photoshop updates to the scans that could be called the 'blood' of an artist here. If you're a paranoid 40 year old man who gets made fun of by people half your age on Socom II online, you consider it another hazard to beware of. In conclusion the internet is what you see and make out of it. Whether it be an artistic journey or a fear. :Steps off podium: :Bows: Thank you.

Well.... ...Unless your using it to interface with something in the real world your net effect outside of the constructs of the internet is zilch. As such, it could be considered a fantasy world for many people.

Today I bought a few DVDs. ...As I bought them, I was musing over how much I had paid. (Even though I got them all cheap...) ...It's interesting. ...Every DVD, computer, TV, router, lightbulb, etc. Depends on electricity. ...Without electricity, it's just a rock. ...And worse than a rock, many electronics are considered hazardous wastes in some states...

...That said, I was also thinking about how few people realize that electricity largely comes from coal, and also several other sources. ....And the consuption/waste of the power plants is directly related to the power consumption. ...I think since electricity is so cheap right now... (I'm pretty sure coal-fired power is the cheapest, and nuclear is catching up...) ...That folks are taking it for granted. They buy CPUs that source a great amount of heat, and consume electricity. ...The modern CPUs need significant cooling, which really wasn't necessary until about 10 years ago. ...Why? Because they are consuming so much power they need a significant heatsink and fan to keep them cool. ..Thus requiring more fuel consuption, and requiring more waste handling/creation, and requiring more air conditioning!

i dunnooo.... ....i guess folks seem to be content in whatever fantasy world they're in, totally oblivious to the constraints, costs and effects around them.

Sorry for the tangent... ...Anyhow, pls do remember there's a real world out there. ...Although I must admit, I tend to forget that myself.

That is very very true, Masamune. People do come to the internet, sometimes even forums to express how they feel. That is mostly because they know someone out there will read it, and having that feeling that someone is actually paying attention to you, gives them relief and stress let out.

What do you think about the internet?

I think it's sexy!! Nah, just a little joke. I think the internet is a good invention. Great to get access to loads of information and other things needed for schooling and to add much more progress to our educations.
BUT, as my weird old history teacher used to say about the internet

Quote: The internet was created for only TWO REASONS!
number one: for star trek
number two: for porn.
the end result, star trek porn.

He was a bit of a crumbled cookie, although he was a very educated man.

Do you think we can benefit from
being on the internet more nowadays than we used to?

Well, being on the net 24/7 is not good, especially to one's health. One needs to find time to go outside, and play in the sun...unless your alergic to it XD.
But everyone benefits from the internet. From having intelligent conversations with people around the world, to broadening your interests and hobbies to new things and achievements.
The internet also helps the society with new jobs...and you know what jobs those are.
The net is also considered a home away from the business world. Look at all those pop-ups as well^.^I shall pop those pop ups *pop!* lol

Should the
internet really be considered a "fantasy world"?

No, it should not be considered a "fantasy world".
a fantasy world is when a stoned guy sits in the corner of his room, with a bong in hand, stares at the ceiling and says..."hello mr.goldfish. why are you here? where is my brother...brother is that you? in the goldfish? ooo dear brother T.T....go away!!! ah!!" *example taken from the Moon Child movie xd*
i dont think that this place should be called a fantasy, mostly because there is nothing incredible or majestic about it.^.^

I don't see what there is to benefit about the internet besides media, online shops, guides for stuff, dictionaries, fandom and discussion.

Why would anyone want to benefit for anything besides chatting about what they like and don't like and a couple of media? :P

Fraud impersination... I have to say... I agree with that one. @_@

The internet is no fancy "fantasy" world, but it CAN be treated as one. All you gotta do is take a cool avatar and act like you're that character by changing actual birth stuff, location, nationality and etc... >_>;

EDIT: Oh yeah! I almost forgot. If people are feeling liek bad hardships, they could use the internet to get rid of the stress. By posting threads (but sometimes ppl dun believe you), finding a good friend over IM, etc. I think I did that once in my newbie days... >>;

I think that yes, it is an escapist tool for those that want to implement it as such. *raises hand* There's nothing for me except a few friends in the 'real world' I don't hardly ever go anywhere when I'm off and have nothing to do. Besides, on the internet you can be anyone you want with nobody to tell you otherwise.

Besides, where else can I call someone a flaming, bloody fucktard without having to worry about listening to them? I can read what they reply, or simply ignore it. Either way it's no skin off my nose.
Also, for a real good insight into 'fantasy worlds' as an escape from the real world- read Kilobyte by Piers Anthony. It kinda puts a whole new spin on things in that regard. -

Your parents have a good point. You are wasting your time on the internet if all you do is stay on minitokyo all day. You aren't gaining any knowledge from the internet. Any information you get from the internet can be obtained from a store, or library. No the internet isn't a fantasy world though. There are real life servers that contain binaries that make up the internet. I don't waste much time online. I do spend alot of time on the computer though, scripting in python, working with web development like php, modifying software or something else along the lines of that. That is something you can't do without computers. But yeah, I do think that people waste their time online. Also, the internet is for porn =P.

Wtf is your problem?!?

Why the f*** do I need to use proprietary filetypes in my signature and avatar? Stupid Minitokyo... STUPID COMPU$ERVE! Use png instead.

Why not? It's a way to deal with your feelings if you don't feel like a flesh and blood person in your immediate environment can help you with anything.

yup yup, i agree that the internet is what you make of it! so it can be a great learning tool or just a place to "waste" your time. it's really up to you how you choose to use the internet.

Quote by SilentMasamuneWhat do you think about the internet

i think the internet can be a wonderful tool to learn new things and to meet new people who are separated by great distances. but then again, the internet is also filled with misrepresentations, so it's up to the individual to discern truth from fiction, especially when trying to doing educational research.

and although the internet has brought people together, i wonder if that has made us more social because we can talk to more people from different places online, or has that made us less social beings because that has made us less prone to engage in physical interactions in the real world setting?

Quote: Do you think we can benefit from being on the internet more nowadays than we used to?

however, i still believe that the benefits outweigh any negative notions that people may have about the internet because i think it has made us into a more integrated global community, and has made our lives easier. yes, we can go to the library to do research, but i find it so much more convenient to research at home by accessing my university's library from the internet. it some ways, i think that it can make our lives more time efficient.

Quote: Should the internet really be considered a "fantasy world"?

it can be if you choose it to be so...if you use a different persona and you find everything on the other side of your screen to be false and made up. and i think it's almost the same as any real world situation where someone that you meet may not be completely honest. albeit, it's much easier to sniff out lies in the real world than online. and sometimes people do want the internet to be their fantasy world because they use it as a means to escape the drudgeries of their lives. and it's not fair to classify the internet as just a fantasy world or not because it has different meanings and uses for different people. it's just not as black and white as that.

Don't worry about tomorrow, don't think about yesterday,
don't live in the future, just make it through today!

The internet is one of the world's greatest inventions. It instantaneously connects millions upon millions of people all around the globe in a matter of seconds (or minutes, depending on of you have dial up XD ). You have instant access to information of all sorts, be it music, research, medical help (sites such as WebMD), and sites of interest, such as this and many other forums. ^_^ The internet is certainly a marvelous thing

Quote by SilentMasamuneDo you think we can benefit from being on the internet more nowadays than we used to?

Oh yes indeed, for many of the reasons listed above. Its a great research tool, and now it has become a very popular way to meet others who share your interests. Look at the number of dating sites on the net nowadays. A friend of mine met her now fiancee over the internet. Had it not been invented, she may never have found him.

Quote by SilentMasamuneShould the internet really be considered a "fantasy world"?

In some ways, I suppose it is. Look at the world of online RPGs. There's hundreds. Many people play these games for hours upon end, pretending to be a character they're not, and in a way living a fantasy life. But the key is learning to differentiate between the two and not let any fantasy life you may live take over your real life. As wonderful as it is, the internet can be addicting. I am somewhat addicted to it myself. XD

But fantasy world or not, the internet is truely a great thing. I mean think about it. If we didn't have the internet, we wouldn't have MT, and thus wouldn't know each other. It has indeed changed our lives, in what I think is for the better. ^_^

the internet is what you make of it,
if you want it to be a fantasy world it can
n if you just want to use it as a means of communication so be it.
as with most things, your actions affect the outcome,
and as well as most things, unexpected incidents can happen,
in general, the internet as a way for people all over the world
to be connected to each and share media and information,

to some people, its a whole nother world.
a place where you can become something your not
n where you can start all over at any point,
its like living life with a reset button n having cheat codes,
theres a multitude of things you can do as long as you have
the knowlodge.

you can call the internet a fantasy world in a more meaningful
n not in a discouraging way,
fantasy can be in a discouraging way as not realisic n just something
made up or rather a place where you can live out your dreams
n have happiness, then the internet can be that,
if it just annoyes you and causes more issues then it can be like hell,

i dont take too much drama online seriously though,
writing something n actually saying something are different things,
most people wouldnt have the guts to say what they say online
so why bother getting angry at a person's thoughts rather than
what they'd acutally say. Who knows how much people actually
lie or tell the truth online, theres no reason to tell the truth or lie
you can say whatever n people will only have that to go by.

for me, i just use the interent to communicate,
not having a permanent cell means i wouldnt be able to talk with my
friends but online, at least we can chat though talking irl is always
better, words mean more like that.
Talking to people around the world is always fun too,
its a great learning tool n become more incorporated into our lives,
might as well make the most of it for now.

I agree with those who said that, simply put, the internet is what you make of it. Yes, there are people who use it to escape the negative aspects of real life that they'd rather not face. Do I think that's healthy? Only to a certain point. It definitely helps knowing that there are people in the world that you can connect with and that may be going through the same things as you. However, it is still important to live in the real world.
And I understand Masamune's parents concerns about the internet. It's very easy to fool someone or manipulate them over the internet, particularly if they're younger. There have been a number of cases of young teenagers getting hurt because they went to meet someone they chatted with on the internet. Much like in the real world, it's beneficial to be wary of strangers.

But I don't think the internet is a bad thing. It has put so much information at our fingertips. You can find just about any piece of information you may be searching for quickly and without ever leaving your house. It's actually quite amazing when you think about it. So overall I think that the good and the bad of the internet cancel each other out. I don't think it's always a fantasy world- it's only that for those who choose to use it that way.

I don't think internet is a fantasy world...I just think it's a place where everyone sees you sort of thing. It's like you're in public and everyone can search anything off of you. Yea well, that's what I think...

oh yea forgot,
i can see why your parents have a negative view of the internet i think
when people become so associated with like games or chatting or such
that takes them away from the real world in a sense,
then those that care for them may get concerened even if they dont fully
understand whats going on.
Parents want there kids to go out n live life to the fullest
n make the most of it, so when you're at home online a lot, it can cause problems,
oh well nothing you can do about that other than move out...

What do you think about the internet?
I think the internet as a tool to buy stuff online, look at the news, and chat with people around the world. (I am not going to mention the negatives for the use of the internet -_-)
Do you think we can benefit from being on the internet more nowadays than we used to?
Yeah, when someone need to sent the same notidication to several people, you can sent an email address to those people inside of calling everyone individually be phone and raise your phone bill. As i said on the first question, people can check on the latest news(world news, anime, etc) and talk to friends far away.
Should the internet really be considered a "fantasy world"?
It would really depend. People use the internet as a new start in life in interacting with people around the world.(if you are chatting that is) I personally wouldn't want to make an online relationship because people ay mask who they really are (ex: i have an online realtionship with a girl who is really a fat old man) I think the internet can be a "fantasy" world because, as I said above, people "reset" their lives on the net.

depends on what you are using the internet for ?..
if you are using the internet for making money or a
stepping stone to meeting up for more people, I would
say it is benefitial. playing a bit of game to relieve stress after a hard days work? still ok...

Quote by SilentMasamuneShould the internet really be considered a "fantasy world"?

maybe or maybe not, do you isolate your self from your real world just to
be spending more time online , with people whose faces you never meet? what do you mean by fantasy world ? pretty subjective... are the people whom you see online not real people too? or are they just a false front whose real personality you will never get to know...

perhaps you should judge for yourself as you grow older.
internet plays with your mind. use it well , it becomes a useful
tool, otherwise .. ever heard of internet addiction therapy ?

ps : internet can also be an alternate source of income? .. etc google adsense :P
