Alternatively they might add a 6 at the beginning of your account number: 67161825 -> 6-7+1-6+1-8+2-5 = -11 -> 1-1=0.

They use this type of algorithms, to prevent a user from entering an incorrect number by mistake; if you tried to make a deposit into account 7161725 instead, it would fail the division by 11 check and warn you that your account number is incorrect. Although similar to the division by 3 or division by 9 methods, this method is preferred for security purposes, as swapping the order of two numbers (7168125), a common mistake, will be detected by this method, but not by division by 3 or division by 9.

Well, it was a bit longer than a quick fact, but I thought it warranted a bit of an explanation!
