Okay... THIS IS ABSTRACT ART.

Personally I hate it. And here's why...

- During the life span of MiniTokyo it has only accumulated 22 pages of art.
- Out of those 22 pages I would hazard a guess that barely 10% is art of any worth.
- Most of it is rubbish 3D renders, fractals, and CG creations that has no artistic merit.
- It is rare for us to Highlight anything in the Abstract Art category because the majority of it is low quality.

If I controlled MiniTokyo I would take the few good pieces of art and move them into Doujinshi. Then nuke the whole of Abstract Art along with all those 3d Renders.

However, here at MiniTokyo we do not run a merciless dictatorship.

This is a chance for you to have your say.

- Do you want to keep Abstract Art?
- Do you LIKE Abstract Art?
- What do you think of it as a section and the quality of art it attracts?

To make it even clearer: If the general population of MiniTokyo does not give a positive response regarding Abstract Art then we will kill it after moving the quality pieces of art into Doujinshi. So as the vicar says:

Speak now, or forever hold your peace.

I do agree, we should kill the abstract art section
I mean abstract art is okay, but it's on a rare ocassion
that someone will submit something in that section that is
decent or good ((no offence to the great artists that have art in that
section)) anywho, i do think it's somewhat useless, and agree
on the idea of merging it with the doujinshi section

idek.

the general problem is many people don't appreciate abstract art as much as anime artworks. it can be seen from the total of favourites accumulated in each of them

and merging it with doujinshi doesn't sound good, as doujinshi is for anime-related artworks [anime artworks made not with anime scans, but by hands]. i don't see that much of anime characters in abstract art.
what's more, we don't have that much of professional artists in abstract rendering (remember this MT is mostly anime-related community, so we have more towards anime artworks). thus, kiling the abstract section may make MT into fully anime artwork website.

i would say it's better to keep it, while exercising a strict control on quality. why can't we just delete those rubbish since they are poorly done?

To be honest, I've never really understood abstract art and from what I've seen (with the exception of a few), they aren't very, well, good.

I don't see a point in that. We'd only have like, maybe a page or two of good abstract art :\ Move the good ones into the doujin section and then, like kokuyu suggested, keep a strict eye on new abstracts coming in.

I vote to keep it. Yes I like looking at abstract art. I don't care what anyone else says about my opinion. If all you're going to do is criticize/complain about my decision you may as well be talking to air.

here's another option: move some (that fit as wallpapers) into General Wallpapers

Quote by WikipediaAbstract art is now generally understood to mean art that does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead uses colour and form in a non-representational way.

that's the reason why many couldn't understand abstract arts. it holds towards viewers' personal opinion more than fixed meaning the artists has intended.

That's not really an option because the few decent works of art there are don't fit into wallpaper resolution.

What I'd like to see is reasons WHY people want to keep Abstract Art. What is it about that section that you like so much that it can not be moved into Doujinshi?

As for your earlier concern about Doujinshi being more anime orientated. That is very true, but Abstract Art can be found in the Original category, and there's no reason that it can't go into doujinshi.

i see.
alright, looks like i missed that size point. my apologize. i was just stating that in case NO is more than YES, and from this context:

Quote:
What can I submit as doujinshi or abstract art?
>>2D Anime, manga, and game-related artwork you have created using traditional art mediums should be submitted as "Doujinshi" (Japanese for independent art). Abstract digital artwork you have created should be submitted as "Abstract Art."

I vote to nuke it. I don't outright hate it, but the category was doomed from the start in my eyes due to the lack of a concrete policy on what exactly MT considers "abstract." People just dumped anything not specifically anime-related into it, despite their art not being abstract at all (in the traditional sense.) Saikusa is right, the quality artwork can be placed in the Original gallery and I think it will make things a bit tidier.

Also, I've seen many members who were confused by the Abstract gallery, undoubtedly because of the lack of a clear definition (questions such as "when is something abstract as opposed to original") so getting rid of it should help in that area too.

A perfect example of what so many people hate about the Abstract Art. The digital renders have little-to-no artistic merit. They may have been impressive when MiniTokyo was created, but now they're a dime-a-dozen. If you've seen one then you've really seen them all, and you certainy can't use them as a stock background for a wallpaper because it would be Ripped "Art". We have all grown used to photoshop, and the many impressive visual effects that can be created using a simple photo manipulating package. Abstract Art hasn't grown and it hasn't evolved.

What I want to know is if there are people who actually like those CG renders? Who is willing to say that they download those and genuinely go 'Wow! That's amazing!' and then adds it to their favourites.

I'm not talking about the fav-whores who add anything & everything to their favourites. I mean people who are genuinely inspired and impressed by them that they want to see more.

Because right now as far as I am concerned they are an eyesore. A blot on the MiniTokyo landscape. And I'm not the only one who thinks so.... which is the whole point of this poll; to find out if there is a genuine desire to keep the Abstract Art section alive.

I feel like I'm in a crowd with lit torches and the abstract-monster is on the run through the MT village!
I rarely look at the abstract section but I like having the option. And for everyone that rails against how "non-artistic" abstract art is, you should remembere that ART IS SUBJECTIVE! that means, what you love, I might hate or feel nothing for.
I'm by no means a great supporter of the abstract world but I am open-minded.

"We are but spiritual creatures enacting a physical existence."

- Do you want to keep Abstract Art?
I think we should keep it because even if it is only 22 pages, those people who created those took the time to make it and probably made it because they thought it was worth the time

- Do you LIKE Abstract Art?
Personally, I'm not a fan of Abstract art although it looks unique and extraordinary compared to the same anime walls, doujinshis, and vectors we see everyday

- What do you think of it as a section and the quality of art it attracts?
I am not sure what this question is asking but I'll say few more things.
It is true that not many people appreciate abstract art and everybody has a different perspective of it.
People might like Da Vinci or Van Gogh or whatever famous art but I think it's just..... plain and boring

I think the problem lies with the vague definition of abstract art given in the MT policy. That gallery has now become like a misc gallery for random stuff that doesn't fit into other categories T__T , which is unfortunate, because there are some nice pieces in there. So no, I don't want to see it removed completely, because I do like things that are in there (good art, but not anime-related, thus can't be submitted into doujinshi)

I wouldn't mind moving the 'good stuff' to Doujinshi, but, we may have to change the definition of Doujinshi a bit, to make it include original art that are not anime related (because I remember one of botChii's messages was that the piece did not feature an anime-related image). However, fanart of say, western animations or movies still get nuked.

Or alternatively, keep the gallery, but rethink the definition and make it much more specific. Instead of say 3-D renders or just any random computer generated art, make it into general art (like general wallpaper sort of), and accept things only in the "original" category (ie, no western fanart). And make the standards higher in this gallery (as high as the wallpaper galleries), like no using filters or one-minute renders, (I don't see any quaranteened items on the first page in that gallery, as opposed to the Anime Wallpapers..) and that it has to have consideration for composition, show effort, etc.

I'd hate to see those good non-anime art (like this one or this one) get deleted because of those low-effort ones...

I agree..... and I don't even know what a vector art is......

I think MapleRose is onto something. I also don't think that it should be an issue as to how many pages the abstract art section is either - if people are using it and their artwork fits the category, then it's working. I personally think that finding abstract artwork in the doujinshi category would make it really hard to find because when I think doujinshi I think of anime-people-related artwork, but maybe that's just me. ^_^' I'd never think to look in this category to find CG renders and the like anyway, so that's my two cents worth. :pacman:

Well, i do like abstract art...and yes i do submit one piece of my abstract art before but, i definitely not agree to put those abstract art into doujinshi section...it's different and it's hard to find it its merged with DOUJINSHI. Maybe we could put in Misc. section if it's necessary.

I do love abstract art, but not like those(most of the useless) artworks in MT's gallery. It's hard to interprete abstract art, and it's even harder to give a "yes" or "no" when it comes to deleting those stuffs.

I would say, nuke it. Merge some good doujin-related arts into the doujinshi category, and re-define the new term of doujinshi. Maybe a bit wider, like accepting non-anime style on the doujin category.

Even this abstract goodness is highlighted. But I'm not sure if 3d renders can also be put in the doujin category...

Yup, as I had mentioned before. There must be a need to redefine the Doujinshi name if action is taken to move abstract arts to that section.

May I ask, what difference is there between Anime and Western animation? As far as known, any Western animation characters inside the art is obvious known as Western Art. Even then, if one make something without adding any anime characters, it can be defined as usual/Western animation, and vice versa.

Abstract Art section is like something between General wallpaper & Doujinshi. If the artwork size is unfit as General wallpaper, yet doesn't contain any anime characters, it should be placed into Abstract Art section. Otherwise, there is a need for a better name if not abstract.

lol....for sure that's the kanji/chinese characters for doujinshi, but please explain in detail. otherwise, it looks like spam ^_^'
according to wikipedia:

Quote by WikipediaDoujinshi are self-published Japanese works, usually manga or novels. They are often the work of amateurs, though some professional artists participate as a way to publish material outside the regular industry. The term doujinshi is derived from doujin, literally "same person," used to refer to a person or persons with whom one shares a common goal or interest) and shi, a contraction of zasshi, meaning "magazine").

However,

Quote by WikipediaDoujinshi are part of a wider category of doujin including but not limited to art collections, anime, hentai and games. Groups of doujinshi artists refer to themselves as a circle.
